I fully understand the swerve. The pedestrian started walking towards the lane and there were almost no margin to the road so actually i would say, well done Waymo! Besides that: Great! "Live" video with "live" comments (and you can of course combine it with studio comments) is the best! Me like!

I agree why did he start walking towards the street lol like he was heading straight to the car. It freaked waymo out lol and I doubt they want to hit someone and end up like cruise lol 💀

Totally, little twitchy but a good decision given the situation. The guy could have tripped and fallen over in the road or something. Might as well not risk it

That was quite the swerve, and good thing the lane to the right was clear. (I have every confidence that Waymo wouldn’t swerve and hit a car, but if it ever comes to that scenario, would the robot driver choose to hit a car verses a pedestrian? This has been debated and meme(d) about for years.)

Just wanna say, to whoever's adding the intermission segments in SponsorBlock, you're doing a fantastic job. Thank you. I don't usually skip but as you mentioned in another video (no idea when it was, KZbin's throwing me between new and old as if it's nothing), some of us need short sometimes but these kind of videos make _zero_ sense being short. So SponsorBlock makes a perfect tool for those of us who need to skip any blank segments :)

That's just awesome :D mostly it seems like they do Kevin's videos more, but I appreciate it when they do mine. Might want to post this under the new video I'm publishing in a few seconds

i just learned about waymo a couple of days ago, never imagined seeing autonomous cars on the street (and for multiple years now already as i learned). very strange to see, completely unthinkable here in germany. thanks for making these videos, excited to see how this will develop

Nice video, but I genuinely wonder how autonomous cars will deal with large potholes in various cities. In Chicago after the big freeze, some of our potholes have gotten so big that it would cause serious damage to a vehicle that hits one. Oh, and when I stayed in Scottsdale recently, the place I was staying was just outside the service area. It was a 10 minute walk to the nearest Waymo pickup/drop off location, and a 20 minute walk to the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park!

Very good point; I do miss Michigan, but I won't miss it for the potholes that's for sure

Hello JJ .. nice to see you back ..I know you can't ride waymo everyday 😂so I waited😅 thanks for sharing waymo videos .. although I don't live in US , autonomous driving is very interesting since I've been driving for 5 years+ now.. everyday same route to work and home is kinda boring and even sleepy sometimes even though my commute only take around 25-30 min

I think Waymo needs to make more cars. i watched someone and he took a ride for the first time to a restaurant said to the the car wait for me, but the car didn't wait it left. So he requested another car and had to wait 50 minutes 😭. If they get more popular and everyone wants to try it literally everyone is gonna have a average wait time of 30 minutes. Edit: the swerve was acceptable the person was walking towards the waymo.

Reminds of the old days, 45-50 minute wait times. Can't believe that's still happening, sigh

The swerve at 8:25 is problematic imo. Waymo should not swerve for a pedestrian that's standing still on a median Edit: I stand corrected. +1 for Waymo here.

Especially when the car in the right lane had just barely cleared the space. But the issue in the comment above (hit pedestrian vs. car) is an interesting one. Does pedestrian safety trump all others?
@Xanthopteryx
@Xanthopteryx 8 ай бұрын
The pedestrian was not standing still but in fact started to move in the direction to the road, and this was a no brainer because the car knew it would not hit the car in the other lane.

Even as a human driver, I would've taken the same action and swerved. The person started to walk forward, maybe they were just going to walk to the edge of the median but a human driver nor an AV would know if that was their intention or not. I think the AV made the correct maneuver here.

If you watch the video with .25x speed, you will see pedestrians started leaning towards the car about 250 ms before waymo approach , a normal person could not have that much quick response but if I see that pedestrians I would switch lane early to be safe and it's better for waymo to switch lane early in the first place though
