Tesla's advertised features for the Semi that are already available are AEB which ID only good if you have the stopping distance. Lane departure alert or avoidance,which was likely off, and Jack knife avoidance that doesn't apply. Unfortunately, Autopilot is only being validated right now on the Semi, which is sad because that would have prevented this incident entirely.

Right....I dispute the claim that EV's are multiples less likely to catch fire than ICE. Considering how many ICE vehicles are on the road vs the tiny percentage of EV's....their fire numbers cannot be looked at as a whole. Also MOST of the ICE fires are caused by defects that are easy to fix....once known about a recall solves the problem. But the fire issue with EV's isn't something that is easily solved so they're still building these vehicles that literally are ticking time bombs that nobody knows if or when they'll go off.

ICE vehicles that catch fire ALWAYS have a defect that the owner should be able to notice...like gas fumes from leaking fuel system fittings. EV's...? Not so much warning so trying to argue that they're 60-100 times less likely to catch fire is not telling the truth.
@kazuu_7772 ай бұрын

@@kazuu_777 Fire statistics are only valid if they're comparing vehicles of equal age. The '60x higher' is BS printed to give people like you ammunition to counter the obvious problem of EV batteries going thermonuclear whenever they feel like it with NO warning. Age of vehicle equates to mileage and defects more likely to show up as things deteriorate. So comparing less than 5 year old vehicles to 20+ isn't fair in the least. Not to mention owner neglect and ignorance is responsible for the VAST majority of ICE fires. Without proper maintenance the engines can begin to misfire...and unless the ECU shuts of the injection to the misfiring cylinder/s (which lots of older vehicles cannot do) the raw fuel gets pumped into the catalytic converters which then overheat and set the car on fire. TOTALLY avoidable.....unlike the EV fires. And easily extinguished which is a very distressing thing about EV fires....what would be a small thing if an ICE caught fire ends up taking out entire car lots (or ships) when EV's light up. So...next time you see the '60x more likely to catch fire'....look to see who generated the article which is trying desperately to mislead the public about how dangerous EV's actually are.

My personal experience with Lithium NMC batteries is, that they are very safe even when physically abused badly. Here I'm talking about prismatic type of cells. Smaller cylindrical cells have much smaller insulation gaps and are shorted quickly when damaged while big prismatic cells have more space for insulation of the spool and the connections themselves. Prismatic cells also don't have the aluminium housing connected to any potential while in cylindrical cells their housing is also a negative terminal. The only way I could start the thermal runaway of a prismatic NMC cell was with penetration. This makes a short circuit thru many layers of the spool directly and when this happens there is no way back. Pouch cells are good as well, but they require external mechanical encapsulation because bare cells are practically unprotected.

The Tesla semi truck and even Tesla cars make excellent fire bombs they can be used to destroy critical infrastructure, like tunnels or parking garages or (imagine if this semi fire had happened under a bridge). So far, no one seems to have realized that these semi trucks or Tesla vehicles can be used as very effective terror weapons. When that happens, things will change just like they change on 911 in 2001 when a terror group realized That fully fueled commercial airplanes made excellent terror weapons. It takes way too long to charge. Any normal semi can go at least 1,500 miles on a fill up and it only takes a few minutes to refuel. The tractor itself is too heavy because of the battery. Although, in this case, the fire resulted from running into a tree, they can explode and burn without anything happening. Look at all of the batter busses that have exploded and burned to the ground. If they tried to haul a load of produce across the country with a Tesla, the entire load would be rotten by the time it got there. And, is it energy efficient? Absolutely not. Also, any Li battery is a fire hazard, even a tiny wafer battery. The bigger the battery the greater the probability that it will catch on fire. One of the drivers in the company I worked for went to sleep in his own diesel truck. He ran off the road into the woods. It took the entire running gear out but no fire. I have a drone with 3 Li batteries. After only 3 years they swelled and were no longer usable and became dangerous. The same thing happened to my camera batteries. I have an Li battery in my Harley. When the temperature goes below 40 degrees, it will not start the engine and the battery was expensive. I have HAZMAT and if I have 1000 pounds of any battery in the box, I have to placard the trailer. That Li battery in the Tesla weighs several thousands of pounds. Even a single battery for a Tesla car, if it is in my trailer, I have to placard the trailer because it is dangerous. All of my information is first hand other than the information I received from the Tesla driver. Also lithium is explosive when exposed to water.

Having 1 out of 100 trucks catch fire is NOT a low rate of failure due to Fire. In fact it's an extremely high rate.
@Br-bs1xeАй бұрын
I don't want to say anything, but diesel is much safer. Diesel has an ignition temperature of 255°C (491°F) and nothing happens because the diesel also has a cooling effect on hot components due to the evaporation that occurs here. Most truck fires are not caused by diesel but rather by tires or cargo. In addition, the lead-acid batteries in trucks are quite harmless because they usually burst and no longer carry any voltage or current. Making trucks electric just makes no sense. Trains have to be electric because it makes sense for them and they are simply much more environmentally friendly than any car or truck.

Hasn't the single most effective for putting out a BEV fire already been demonstrated to be draping the vehicle with non-flammable fabric that will SMOTHER the fire: no oxygen = no comustion. This has been demonstrated for passenger vehicles but the scale of the Tesla Semi undoubtedly presents unique challenges.
@tedoptional-p8l2 ай бұрын
Yeah, bigger is better. Spray on might work.
@albertmagician86132 ай бұрын
Nonsense. No oxygen can't prevent anything. Once a battery is short circuited it will heat up. No external influence can prevent it. Massive cooling can prevent neighboring batteries to heat up.

According to the Korean Insurance Development Institute, a co-operative industry set-up, EVs already have a greater incidence of fire related disasters than ICE cars. They say that fire related EV incidents in the previous 12 months amount to 0.93 per 10,000 electric vehicles vehicles whereas, in the same period ICE incidents were 0.90 per 10,000 and this is at a time when the average age of electric vehicles on Korea's roads is less than 12 months. The flare ups are predominantly among EVs that are between 12 and 36 months old. The average age of ICE cars in Korea is more than 10 years. The average insurance claim from EV incidents is 52% more than ICE car incidents. This is partly explained by the average market price of the ICE cars being involved being dramatically less than the EV cars, the figures being from the period before second-hand EV prices beginning to fall through the floor, but part of the increased cost of the EV claims is the terrible damage done by EV fires and these stats have nothing to do with the two recent spectacular incidents. The suggestion that the driver of this Tesla truck fell asleep is pure speculation. We will have to wait until all the evidence is in but the driver of the lorry may have lost control because the thing had caught fire. People should not make accusations that cannot be substantiated. Spreading vicious rumours can get video-makers into a very sticky legal swamp. Who is going to pay for the spraying of fire retardant on nearby woodland ? .... Tesla's insurers .... OR THE TAX-PAYERS OF CALIFORNIA ?

When you factor in that most evs are not very old, whereas most ice fires occur in older vehicles that changes the level of concern. Since there are only 100 tesla semis on the road, yet 1 burned, that's a 1 percent fire rate, way way way higher than diesel truck fires.
