The gas cloud produced consists -- 50% carbon monoxide 10 to 20% carbon dioxide hydrophic acid gas, hydrochloric acid gas, hydrogen cyanide, around 10% ethane. The ethane vents small droplets of the organic solvent and what you've got there is a very volatile explosive vapour Cloud. It is not smoke!

You're ahead of yourself, assuming the semi had the technology, it has to first be activated by the driver! Well, if the driver is asleep, it's not going to happen! Now if the Semi was self-aware, it would notice the driver was falling asleep and take over because the Semi would not want to die, sadly, we're not there yet!

It has the capability, and does have lane departure and assists, but Autopilot is not enabled at all. I don't think any Class D trucks offer the same creature comforts that traditional vehicles offer. Asside from Tesla, they are basically all manual transmission with often over 20 gears. Tesla's advertised features for the Semi that are already available are AEB which ID only good if you have the stopping distance. Lane departure alert or avoidance,which was likely off, and Jack knife avoidance that doesn't apply. Unfortunately, Autopilot is only being validated right now on the Semi, which is sad because that would have prevented this incident entirely.

As a Firefighter of 24 years I've lost count how many car ICE car/truck motor vehicle accidents and fires we've responded to. When the contents of motor oil, radiator fluids and other fluids escape, they are simply covered with sand and left behind. DEEP is notified, but those chemicals are left behind. Unfortunately, other vehicles will run over that sand mixed with those oils, etc., it eventually rains and it just goes into our road drains, which most lead into local rivers. 😑

Right....I dispute the claim that EV's are multiples less likely to catch fire than ICE. Considering how many ICE vehicles are on the road vs the tiny percentage of EV's....their fire numbers cannot be looked at as a whole. Also MOST of the ICE fires are caused by defects that are easy to fix....once known about a recall solves the problem. But the fire issue with EV's isn't something that is easily solved so they're still building these vehicles that literally are ticking time bombs that nobody knows if or when they'll go off.

@@kazuu_777 Mark Twain once said 'There are three kinds of lies. Lies, damned lies....and statistics'. Considering how many millions of ICE vehicles are on the roads and how old many of them are....comparing fire statistics from them and recently produced EV's isn't a valid comparison. ICE vehicles that catch fire ALWAYS have a defect that the owner should be able to notice...like gas fumes from leaking fuel system fittings. EV's...? Not so much warning so trying to argue that they're 60-100 times less likely to catch fire is not telling the truth.
@kazuu_777
@kazuu_777 15 күн бұрын
@@recoilrob324 Even though BEVs are relatively new, that alone doesn't justify a fire incident rate over 60 times higher. Or is there data suggesting that internal combustion engine cars suddenly experience a massive spike in fire incidents after a certain number of years or mileage?
@recoilrob324
@recoilrob324 15 күн бұрын
@@kazuu_777 Fire statistics are only valid if they're comparing vehicles of equal age. The '60x higher' is BS printed to give people like you ammunition to counter the obvious problem of EV batteries going thermonuclear whenever they feel like it with NO warning. Age of vehicle equates to mileage and defects more likely to show up as things deteriorate. So comparing less than 5 year old vehicles to 20+ isn't fair in the least. Not to mention owner neglect and ignorance is responsible for the VAST majority of ICE fires. Without proper maintenance the engines can begin to misfire...and unless the ECU shuts of the injection to the misfiring cylinder/s (which lots of older vehicles cannot do) the raw fuel gets pumped into the catalytic converters which then overheat and set the car on fire. TOTALLY avoidable.....unlike the EV fires. And easily extinguished which is a very distressing thing about EV fires....what would be a small thing if an ICE caught fire ends up taking out entire car lots (or ships) when EV's light up. So...next time you see the '60x more likely to catch fire'....look to see who generated the article which is trying desperately to mislead the public about how dangerous EV's actually are.

While we love the Tesla Semi and have always had a soft spot for it, there's no denying that the environmental impact of the fire is indeed concerning. When a lithium-ion battery catches fire, it releases toxic fumes and chemicals that can harm both the air quality and the surrounding environment. Additionally, the water used to extinguish the fire can become contaminated, seeping into the soil and potentially affecting groundwater. This incident highlights the need for stricter safety measures in battery design and better methods for dealing with such fires to minimize their environmental footprint. It's crucial that the industry continues to innovate not just for performance but also for safety and environmental protection.

Well, EV’s can catch fire when running into a tree, just like a gas car… but they tend to burn very slowly at first and this gives you plenty of time to get out of the car. Also, they are safer than gas cars more rigidly structured and less likely to flip as well, so you’re more likely to get out in the first place. If you’re in a major accident with a gas car and the gas tank is ruptured you’re instantly toast. Yes, it is easier to put out a gas car fire, but as a driver, I’m more concerned about not being injured, and not being instantly incinerated. I’m less concerned about how long the fire department Hass to stay around afterwards.🤔

An EV semi doesn't make any sense. It can only go 500 miles if there are no hills. If there are hills, the distance is reduced a lot. In cold weather it is a big problem. It takes way too long to charge. Any normal semi can go at least 1,500 miles on a fill up and it only takes a few minutes to refuel. The tractor itself is too heavy because of the battery. Although, in this case, the fire resulted from running into a tree, they can explode and burn without anything happening. Look at all of the batter busses that have exploded and burned to the ground. If they tried to haul a load of produce across the country with a Tesla, the entire load would be rotten by the time it got there. And, is it energy efficient? Absolutely not. Is it good for the environment? Looking at the entire picture it is very bad for the environment.

@@tedoptional-p8l I am sorry but I am retired but drove tractor trailer, had my own truck, and still have my CDL. So I do know about diesel powered trucks. I have also talked with a driver that drove a Tesla truck daily. He had a short run and so he could use the Tesla. But he said that any hill drained the battery. Also, any Li battery is a fire hazard, even a tiny wafer battery. The bigger the battery the greater the probability that it will catch on fire. One of the drivers in the company I worked for went to sleep in his own diesel truck. He ran off the road into the woods. It took the entire running gear out but no fire. I have a drone with 3 Li batteries. After only 3 years they swelled and were no longer usable and became dangerous. The same thing happened to my camera batteries. I have an Li battery in my Harley. When the temperature goes below 40 degrees, it will not start the engine and the battery was expensive. I have HAZMAT and if I have 1000 pounds of any battery in the box, I have to placard the trailer. That Li battery in the Tesla weighs several thousands of pounds. Even a single battery for a Tesla car, if it is in my trailer, I have to placard the trailer because it is dangerous. All of my information is first hand other than the information I received from the Tesla driver. Also lithium is explosive when exposed to water.

Why didn't the Tesla software prevent the Semi from going any further off-road than the apron/shoulder, driver conscious/asleep or not? This has nothing to do with FSD. The driver should be made to pay hundreds of thousands in any case.
@OH-sv9hk
@OH-sv9hk 18 күн бұрын
Turning on FSD (Beta or Supervised) adds greatly to safety and layers of crash prevention. Even if a driver is incapacitated for any reason it would have been great to have an automatic system react to imitate collision by applying maximum braking, and also turning some small amount to avoid direct impact with solid object. This could have resulted in deceleration spread over a greater, but still short distance. This would reduce striking force and the ability to break open the battery pack. A small swerve that laid the truck on its side rather than Center punching the tree could have provide the deceleration to prevent breaking open in the pack, and most probably the driver would still be saved. It’s not uncommon to see semis at circular interstate on-ramps laid over on their side without death. It appears that if a human or automatic driving system had been functional, the accident would have been far less likely to have the striking force to bust open the battery. That said fire fighting of lithium battery fires must be improved as well as safer batteries - like the promise of solid-state batteries. I’m no expert on lithium battery fire fighting, but I believe using sand to smother the battery is effective to some extent? Wild ass guess but better than just sand - how about some sand like smothering substance that also has some kind of chemical reaction to help stop the rapid oxidation of fire reactions?? Using water seems like bring a knife to a gun fight? The overwhelming lower cost economics of EVs make this a race between development of inherently safer batteries and wide deployment of better battery Fire Fighting equipment. The advantages of EVs are not going away. If we don’t lead the way forward Europe and Asia will.

Ev's as they stand are not fit for purpose. I am not a conservative. That said the environmental impact of mining for the materials to make them is far more harmful then the typical ICE vehicle. Why EV's fire frequency is low the damage resulting from an EV fire is high. One EV catching fire in a car park or home is usually a full blown extreme loss. EV's burn much hotter, they can melt concrete and steel, they produce their own oxygen and are self supporting fires.

My personal experience with Lithium NMC batteries is, that they are very safe even when physically abused badly. Here I'm talking about prismatic type of cells. Smaller cylindrical cells have much smaller insulation gaps and are shorted quickly when damaged while big prismatic cells have more space for insulation of the spool and the connections themselves. Prismatic cells also don't have the aluminium housing connected to any potential while in cylindrical cells their housing is also a negative terminal. The only way I could start the thermal runaway of a prismatic NMC cell was with penetration. This makes a short circuit thru many layers of the spool directly and when this happens there is no way back. Pouch cells are good as well, but they require external mechanical encapsulation because bare cells are practically unprotected.

In respons to this video, you can penetrate the battery of a BYD electric car and it will not catch on fire because it's uses a whole different technology. Second, I'm sure Tesla did some crash tests but not against a tree at high speed. The chassis of the Tesla Truck might have been tear open a battery part which caught on fire? So... Why not make the front of the Tesla Truck stronger? Build a system around the Tesla cars that, when the battery catch on fire due crash or whatever, it alerts the driver while a bed of sand around the batteries is opened, delaying the fire. Or just figure out a team up between Tesla & BYD and other EV manufactures how they build their batteries to prevent fire in the future.
