Ben Collins will have driven an E61 M5 Touring when it was new back in the day, so what will he think of our V10-engined car 15 years on? Mike Fernie met up with the ex-Stig to see how the M5 stacked up.

I also have the same colour (which is Monaco Blue) M5 Touring. I love driving with the SMG gearbox. It is an automated manual gearbox so to me is the best of both worlds: Easy to pootle round town, and faster than you could do it yourself on the open road. This little blip of the engine it gives as you change down is heaven. I can't double de-clutch like it🙂

The getrag smg III was developed specifically for this engine and only this engine. It makes the most of the engines power band and for me adds to the driver experience, auto for when you want to poodle about, flappy paddles for race mode! The manual gearbox has 6 gears compared the the 7 of the smg, it will drop the revs too low between gears and therefore performance wise will be slower.

Keep the SMG!! Here in Canada we got plenty of manual e60 m5 and having felt both the SMG gear ratios fit the s85 powerband much much nicer. The car feels quicker with the SMG and 4-6 gears only drop around 1k rpm upshifting making it sounds like an f1 car on the highway. Ppl here swap the diff on the manuals to 3.91 i think but that gets expensive and you'll be revving higher while cruising.

If it wasn't a 1 of 1 spec Estate, I'd definitely manual swap it, but given how rare it is, I'd leave it as is. It'll be worth a lot more when it is all original and as Stig said, it being the last of the Touring version, it is even more desirable. The engine is perfect, the minor interior damage has been repaired. Keep it as is and when you sell it, use that money for an even better project and keep selling up. See how far you can take it.

I would keep it as is and not go for the manual gearbox. The SMG is pretty reliable for an automated manuel (there is far worse out there!) and the experience is very unique. DSC off + S6 is nothing like you will ever experience again! I have driven both and for me the SMG is best. The manual gearbox feels like an afterthought and does not suit the character of the engine as well as the SMG does. The SMG is brutal like this car should feel.

That SMG3 Gearbox was built specifically for that engine, the manual that the US Market got was an after thought, a sales pitch. The ratios aren't matches to the power band as well for the S85. It might be more fun having a manual but in terms of pure performance the SMG is the better transmission.

I mean it doesn't matter what you think really, the facts are the facts. BMW Designed and matched the SMG specifically for the S85, it's not used on any other engine. S65 has different power delivery, it's manually transmission is not matched as well as the SMG to the S85. The SMG3 has a shift time of 85 - 150 milliseconds in S6, there's no way you can manual shift that fast.

What really drives me crazy (besides the lovely E61 M5!) is the fact that there are two different brands and models of tires mounted on this car. Being a RWD car, with wider tires at the back it's a well known fact that BMW's (especially the models with "some" hp) are reacting kind of weird when there are two different brands/models of tires mounted on the car. And it will get worse when the tires are a bit "gone", what can potentially happen with an E61 M5. And please: DON'T swap the SMG III with the manual gearbox of the E92 M3. Yes, in the US you could order the M5 with a manual gearbox (I think it was from the 650i or so, can't really remember exactly), but the E6x M5 is special for three reasons: 1. V10 NA engine 2. SMG III transmission 3. Available as an estate So PLEASE don't change the gearbox on it. Thanks a lot and very kind regards from Germany, Philipp

All time favorite M5. Yes, manual, please. The US (!!!) version had a manual for the E6x M's that was never sold in Europe, but yeah, there's that guy who dives even deeper into the BMW parts bin to put together something that's apparently even better. I would make sure the engine is in perfect working condition first, though, and if it is, do the swap.

Please dont manual swap it, its already great. Don't poke the bear. You've been so fortunate to have found this in as great a shape as it is. Love seeing Ben drive and commentate as well.

I would definitely leave it... As a lover and owner of the saloon version, I am of the opinion that the SMG gearbox is part of the whole package and and experience, and one of the reasons why these cars are still so talkable today... But that is just my opinion... 👍

For what reason? Ben Collins who has driven for James Bond stunts, raced cars, was on Top Gear testing cars around dunsfold for 7 years or so, and he says leave it as it is. He knows what he’s talking about. Why spend all that money, when it’s perfect the way it is. 🤷🏼

@@Metal05 Because manuals are more fun than automatics, especially old single clutch ones, because modifying cars is cool, because having something unique and interesting is better than having something standard and dull, and finally because I just personally prefer manual cars. They asked Ben's opinion, and that's great, but they also asked for everyone else's, and mine happens to be that swapping in a manual would make it a better car. I'm sure the car is fine as it is, and I'm sure it's adequately fun, but I believe that having a manual would improve it. If you feel otherwise, that's fine, but just because I have a different opinion to someone else, regardless of their experience, doesn't make it wrong. I wouldn't argue with Ben, or anyone with his level of expertise anything objective with regards to driving a car, but the question of manual or single clutch auto comes down purely to opinion. Me thinking that the car would be better with a manual doesn't detract from anyone else thinking the car should have an auto, and I understand why some people might think it would be. Does that answer your question fully enough?

Irrelevant and unnecessary introduction to the video, but highly amusing. Keep it auto. Its not like it's a lazy, sloppy slushmatic. It's quite precise and keeps you in the torque band well. Plus gives you the luxury cruise option. Honestly, what would be gained by making it manual?

How genuine in his answers and observations, most people would of said yes go for the manual its purer, but he totally gets and understands the V10 estate, its a family tourer, why spend that money its all there already, he didn't once mention the jerry response from the gearshift, it appeared at home in his hands. Wish i could afford one of those. That noise!

I would love if Ben would take the Steering wheel of this channel, of course Mike and the Crew are the people who are doing the blunt of the work, you guys need a bigger budget. Maybe combining it with sponsors, I wouldn't mind watching a minute of ad segment if it we could keep The Stig. Combine it with guests and their cars/projects from other channels could also be helpful spreading the word.
