A lot has ro do with road construction. I-80 is a never ending mess of construction. Narrow lanes and challenging detours, sime that overdimensional loads can pass and some not.

Hey isn’t it better for the driver if they’re being paid per mile to drive further?
@luckybananaheavyhaul3407
@luckybananaheavyhaul3407 2 күн бұрын
@jamesbroughton9900 I mean it’s all relative. You need to be paid at a very high rate per mile to do this because loads like this one advance at very low speeds with all the sharp turns and hills and detours through towns

Going up the hill in first gear reminds me of when we went on holiday to what was then Yugoslavia, and went up a mountain. A cliff rock face on one side and a two mile drop on the other side. The only time I never took any pictures, my thoughts were that if I took a large breath, we would go over🤣🤣🤣. Couldn't go down any more gears. We were in first gear and hairpin bends all the way to the top

The last snow I worked 2' on the road along the Ohio river, cars on route 7 covered completely before they sent me there. My Helper laid her plow on it's side 10 minutes after she left the outpost. I absolutely love snow. Probably because here in Manchester, on the west side of the UK, we get very little as we have a temperate climate which is the result of the Gulf Stream which crosses the Atlantic from the Caribbean, we do, however, get lots of rain🤣. However, the hills and mountains do get snow and can be pretty bad, as the roads, especially crossing over moors (ie, Dartmoor), have no footpaths, its straight into trouble if the snow is covering where the edges of the road are, so there are poles stuck into the sides of the road, and that shows the limit of the road, you do not go past these poles. For such a small country, weather wise, the pennines which are hills that stretches from the Scottish border down to the middle of England, (Derbyshire), and its these hills that stops the east side of the UK from being warmer, and the west side doesn't get the snow which comes down from the Nordic countries

my question, why do they route you thru small towns and keep you off at least 4 lane roads
@terwilliger1946
@terwilliger1946 3 күн бұрын
There are multiply reasons. Over head height clearances, bridge weights that we can cross, width restrictions on other roads. All this plays into how a state routes oversize. Hope that answers your question.
@haloreaper1000
@haloreaper1000 3 күн бұрын
Let's not forget some states will route you through some bs ways. If you don't catch it in time and call state dot. They tend to say wth and re route you personally out of the spot your not supposed to be in
@b2bp
@b2bp 3 күн бұрын
In this area, if you're not on the interstate you're usually on a 2 lane road. The hills are rugged so the roads follow the river valleys which are full of old, small towns where the road zig zags through town. Not a lot of options for different routes.

It's a long way across Pennsylvania, isn't it? And how did you ever get the load in to the lot at the Penn-Can truck stop at the Harford PA. exit? That lot isn't that big.
@luckybananaheavyhaul3407
@luckybananaheavyhaul3407 2 күн бұрын
The entrance to the Penn-Can actually goes better than you might think. The worst part about that entrance is the side hill so the load leans a little

@@luckybananaheavyhaul3407 I thought about that. Even with the trailer almost on the ground I wondered if your center of gravity was high enough to give you trouble on that slope. I wish I had been there to watch you come it. Happy trucking, Jeff

Not usually planned in advance. It is up to the driver (me) to estimate where we will be at the end of our day and find a suitable parking. Trip planning is a big unseen part of this job!
