Driving a straight cut Classic Mini for the first time - WOW!

Pretty sure i've heard of straight cut drops being used with the standard box, this is what i was thinking about for my 998 purely for the noise. Greetings from Scotland.

Yep, straight cut drop gears is something that’s available to replace on your A series engine and is much easier to do than replace the entire gear set like I have in Grace. However, this will add more noise than a straight cut gear set and can be quite a drone especially at highway speeds. With my straight cut gear set, because the ratio of 4th is 1:1, it quietens down once 4th gear is reached, making it a comfortable drive. I’ve heard of people fitting these to their engines only to remove them within 1000kms because the noise is too much. Just some food for thought. Tomo

hey mate.... what is the final drive ratio ?

I'm pretty sure that it's a 3.44, you have to be careful when choosing a final drive for a straight cut gearbox as they do have a very tall 1st gear, I wouldn't go any taller than a 3.2 diff.

@@pauljeffries thanks mate, i have a straight cut a plus with straight drop gear and 3.6 x pin diff in a 73 leyland with a very mild 1275... im about to rebuild and heavily modify the motor and was thinking of going down to a 3.4..... i was listening to the rpm and watching the speedo... i think ive made my mind up to change. cheers

Mine has a straight cut Tran-X box and drops with a 3.7 4 pin, I'll be going to 3.44 as well.
