Hi Nick! I was thinking about your gearbox noise and thought this might be some help explaining how it all works!

Excellent music taste Sir! Currently inspecting my first torn down mini gearbox, my baulk rings have some wear on their three lugs but not so much on the friction surfaces (not that I've measured the gap to the gear face yet). Do you think this will have a drastic effect on the gearbox operation or can they be re-used with some wear in this area? It's for a standard 1275 road build but will see spirited driving. It doesn't help that this engine and gearbox project I bought on Ebay is costing SIGNIFICANTLY more than I expected it to so I'm trying to save money where it's safe to do so. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You won't usually notice any "wear" on the three big lugs that drive the syncro with the main shaft. As long as there is a gap to the gear when the syncro is pushed onto it's cone, it should be doing it's job. Note the condition of the engagement dogs on each gear... if they look good, the synchros are working. If they look bashed up, there has been grinding!

@@JemalCRM yeah I agree it seems strange to have wear on the lugs. can't find reference to that on forums or anything. The gap is good on all my synchros, so will check the dogs next, would definitely prefer to get 4 baulk rings than a new gear set! Cheers for the response

possibly silly question: if towing a mini behind a motorhome, would the odometer go up even without the engine on? My intuition says yes. Purely hypothetical, as I will never do such a thing.

Good question! I had to think about it. Yes it will because the wheels will turn the main shaft and drive the speedo cable.
