A Fox Body Mustang Is one of the smallest versions of the Mustang. Even though the 5.0 V8 is antiquated, it is still a big engine in a tiny car.

Ragimund VonWallat when I finally find the one I want, I won’t drag race. I appreciate the Fox’s because I was born in 84 and it has a sentimental value. If you take care of the car it’ll last a long time. I would of course have some fun every now and then but that’s it. There was a woman who owned a fox and had over 700,000 miles with original engine and transmission.

the slowing blinker is indicative of reduced system voltage at idle... the capacitors in the relay circuit take longer to 'fill up' with less voltage and the blinker slows because the capacitors discharging once full triggers the energizing of the coil within the relay.

The GT weighed 200lb+ compared to the LX which made the LX accelerate faster. The GT had a stiffer suspension which made it handle better and with better aero gave it a 1mph faster top speed compared to the LX lol. The LX was much faster than the GT though in acceleration. Especially in notchback form which weighed 75lb less than the hatchback. In exchange for the added weight, the hatchbacks were much stiffer structurally though and handled better than the notchbacks. Speed: Notch LX> Hatch LX> GT Handling: GT> Hatch LX> Notch LX.

The 87-93 5.0 was an excellent car with so-so brakes. Great motor, and as long as you keep the cooling system flushed it will never overheat, and the AOD was decent. My GT lasted 12 years and lasted well over 140k VERY hard miles. I'd added a cam, GT40 heads and manifold with long tube headers, and rear discs. I saw the second owner 5-6 years ago still driving it! Fun car, and easy to work on.

I once had a 1990 Mustang LX 5.0 coupe. It had a 2.73 final drive (4 spd OD auto) w/o limited slip. Terrible to drive in winter precip, especially icy roads. With the tall gearing, it was slow off of the line but responsive once it got going. It actually got decent highway mpg. I always used 89 octane (mid-grade) gas. Reliability was never a strong point of the cars but when they ran, they were relatively fun to drive.

My dad hated that car because I got 2 tickets in it within the first month of driving it lol. They certainly are very fun cars to drive. Also the dead light switch was there for the Mustang GT, it would have been the switch to turn on the fog lights for them. I suspect that the car you're driving is a LX because my car had the same dead switch, anyways cool video!

the blinker slowing down is because there isnt enough voltage getting to it when the rpms drop too low, either from too much wiring and/or too thin of wire. it might have been like that from the factory or age might have done its work on the grounds. on my truck everything electrical would dim or slowdown below about 1k rpms, fixed the headlights with a relay and just deal with the slower wipers and blower motor.

Known as the Ford Fox platform, it was used for 15 years until 1993 and many models of vehicles built on it. The platform name became part of a nickname that got so popular for the Mustangs built on it during that time, that they are still often referred to as, The Fox Body's.

The "Fox Body" 5.0 Mustangs of the 1987 to 1993 period are just now beginning to get awareness from the mass audience. Us owners always knew we had a great car, great aftermarket, even magazines devoted to them. One of the things that people don't realize is the stunning value these cars had, the bang for the buck. Mine is a 1988. I bought it brand new, literally off the showroom floor, at Burch Ford in La Habra, California. I really liked the GTs since they started getting serious with them in 1982. I was not a fan of the louvers on the taillights and faux ground effects of my era GTs (for those that don't remember, this is when jet boys were putting goofy plastic slotted overlays on top of their existing tail lights, a fad that thankfully died). However, I was looking for a nice used one when the owner of the dealership made me a deal I could not refuse on a brand new GT. I paid $14,700 for it. For the next several years, this was my commuter car. I put 190,000 miles on it before I retired it as my driver, I still have it and it has 201,000 miles on it. During that time, I had the following thing done on it, almost all of it I did myself: Many many oil changes, because I wanted to preserve the engine, one radiator, one heater core, three alternators, a fuel injector, a number of brake jobs, one alignment (not much to set on these cars), one rubber bushing replaced, one clutch replacement, one shift quadrant replacement, one in-tank fuel pump replacement. That is it. It never broke, it never let me down. The heads and not even the valve covers have ever been off. It still has great pull. The 5 speed is a great transmission on this car, there are no bendy linkages, the shifter/stick screws right onto a stub coming out of the transmission. This car carried me through heavy storms, winds, 113 degree heat for weeks on end; I brought computer and server spares with me when I was a technician. When my hot water heater gave up, I got another one at Sears, put down some old carpeting in the back of the trunk, wired the hatch down on the part of the water heater box sticking out the back, and drove it home that way. The brakes are not super great, an upgrade to bigger discs or four whee discs may be a good option for those interested. It has power everything except seats, but even those have a power lumbar support. I got so much use out of this car and when friends were going through car after car every few years, I just kept going and the car was paid for after 48 months--I had no car payments for over a decade. It was the best money I ever spent, and the best value of anything I have purchased, besides my house. Grab a good one while you can if interested.

UPDATE: I guess for those of you who have come across this video and browse through comments. That’s broke college student me in the video, since then the engine was rebuilt about 2 years ago as well as the T5 swap. It’s seen the track the last 2 years and is a phenomenal street/track toy. I’ll be doing some videos on it soon, hopefully by summer I’ll have a *new* build breakdown on it.

@2:07 can confirm this quirk lasted into the early SN95s as well and scared the crap out of me for the first few months of owning the car - thought I was already going to be sinking a few grand into a new trans. Nope, that's just how the AOD/AODE likes to be sometimes.

My '86 Foxbody had the "Mustang" taken off the trunk lid and doesn't say "Mustang" anywhere else on the car. A parking ticket attendant wrote down for make and model of the car "Ford 5.8" on the ticket looking at the fender emblems (the car has a 351W swap) since she had no idea what kind of car it was.

I've noticed RC sometimes turns the wheel by shuffling his hands instead of the over-hand; seems a bit awkward and stiff, I always heard the over-hand wheel turn was smoother and "better"/more relaxed and casual. edit: @ 9:37 he turns with both shuffle and over-hand cross

You need to drive a non POS Fox Body. I know, i know good luck finding one nowadays that hasn't been ragged on. But if you find a below 120k mileage stick shift stock foxbody 5.0 your view will sway a little bit. Not drastically but enough to put a smile on your face.

Mine was AOD originally. I didn't know how to drive stick before I swapped it. I learned. Check out stinger performances writeup on how to swap in a 5speed, it's pretty helpful. I also have a list compiled of all the parts required from when I did it. It took me about a year to collect everything off of craigslist.
