Filmed on Wednesday, August 16 2023, I drive around the village Sauk City, WI to see what's going on.
The story of Sauk City began in 1840 when Agoston Haraszthy, a charismatic Hungarian known to some as "Count" Haraszthy, purchased a plot of land by the Wisconsin River. Alongside his English-born business partner, Robert Bryant, Haraszthy expanded his land holdings and established the town initially named Széptáj, translating to "beautiful place" in Hungarian. The town underwent several name changes, becoming Westfield in 1849, and finally Sauk City in 1852, the same year it was incorporated as a village.
Sauk City has been a melting pot of cultures, most notably marked by the arrival of German immigrants in 1852. These immigrants founded the Sauk City Free Congregation, a liberal religious society that celebrated German music, literature, and culture. Park Hall, built in 1884, stands as a testament to this cultural flourishing, now serving as the Sauk County Free Congregation, a Unitarian Universalist fellowship.
The village gained national attention in a 1914 edition of Harper's Weekly magazine, naming it "America's Foremost City." This acclaim was partly due to a pageant that drew 4,000 attendees, celebrating the village’s history and establishing the school as a central community hub.
A notable incident occurred on August 28, 1977, when an elephant from a circus caused a ruckus in a nearby nursing home. Miraculously, no one was injured despite the significant damage caused.
Sauk City is proud to be the birthplace of Culver's, a popular restaurant chain, with its first location opening on July 18, 1984. The village is also home to Arkham House, a publishing firm devoted to dark fantasy literature, and Cuca Records, a record label that has produced a variety of music genres.
Despite having a shared school system, police department, and hospital with the adjacent Prairie du Sac, Sauk City maintains its unique identity with separate fire departments and libraries. The community’s high school, Sauk Prairie High School, symbolizes the unity between the two villages, proudly represented by the eagle mascot.
