When I was learning to drive, I asked my instructor about having an extra lesson at night. Made a world of difference and gave me confidence to drive by myself once I had a car. I'd always advise learners to have that extra lesson, you can't buy experience.

We're you more confident driving alone at night then in the day in the beginning?
@SL-pg4dh
@SL-pg4dh Жыл бұрын
@@jwells38 Yes, and that's only because there were fewer cars on the road and fewer on lookers to judge your driving skills lol. But My opinion of night driving changed when I went on the highway for the first time. It was scary and there were barely any street lights unlike the regular street. You only have your headlight as guidance and you can't ride on your high beam.

Thank you very much for making this video. It's very informative. I find night time a whole different experience from driving during the day. For one thing lights are far brighter on cars than they used to be, and they're almost blinding. Especially if it has been raining and the roads are wet. Where I live, people are inclined to drive just as fast at night as they would during the day. I have seen myself driving at an appropriate speed for the conditions at night, and people are up your backside mad to overtake. Speeding at 60mph is not appropriate on narrow, windy country roads at night. I think even 50mph is too fast on narrow country roads. Just my opinion. Why do people drive right up your backside at night, not leaving even a safe separation distance. Why do people seem to always be in so much of a hurry on the roads?

+Claire McNabb Thanks for your comment! It’s amazing how many risks other drivers take - it’s as they haven’t considered that something unexpected could happen. I like to think ‘what if a bus comes towards me’ and drive accordingly, so I’m never forced to brake or steer suddenly. Stay safe out there!

Great video, thanks! Some more tips for newer drivers - you should learn all this with your instructor so this is mainly just a recap: Make sure you know ALL the light controls before setting off! You need to know how to switch on/off the lights and between parking and normal lights (usually a turn dial on the right). Flick the indicator switch back slightly to 'flash' full beam. Pull the switch back fully towards you to stay on full beam, and repeat to switch back to dipped beam. Full beam is indicated by the BLUE light on the dashboard. Make sure you do not dazzle other drivers on full beam - its very dangerous as they cannot see. Keep your left hand hovered over the control so you can switch from full to dipped quickly as a cars lights are visible opposite and approaching towards you, and switch back again when it is clear. Remember to switch off lights completely when leaving the car otherwise it will drain your battery, there will be an audible tone as well when you open the door in case you forget. Hope that helps! :)

+dave597 Great advice thanks - although not all cars have main beam controls that work the same way - on our cars we push away to turn on main beam, then pull forward to turn it off. Check the cars manual if it's not clear what to do on a new car. Our 'Show Me, Tell Me' video shows how to work all the light controls on our car. 👍🏼

I've got my second driving lesson next week and it's scheduled just before sunset, it's a 2 hour lesson so will definitely be fully dark. Bit nervous about it as I'm still used to the idea of actually driving let alone in the dark. This video has been very helpful preparing me for that lesson!

The first few lessons are usually the most difficult, as there are so many new skills being learnt at once in order to control the car. Good luck with your lessons 👍🏼

Hello Natalie, I have been taking the lessons as well. Also had the same problems as you mentioned. However, not sure I could imagine of a free road or place to take lessons from friends/family at home, as its forbidden here in Germany. We have some specially designed private learning paths, though but there is a maximum speed limit of 30 Km/h. Are you from the UK? Is it possible there to take private lessons on roads on one's own ? Greetings, Saurabh.

Thank you. I was never taught to drive in the dark even though I have just passed my test. I am out Friday night and I dread the drive home including a very steep bridge and narrow roads all in the country without street lights and I wear glasses which i am sure Will glare. Dreading it as last time I tried I couldn't see a thing and someone had to take over, although that was when I was a learner in the beginning.

If you can't see a thing - make sure your headlamps and windscreen are clean, as it makes a huge difference. Allow yourself plenty of time, and drive as slowly as you need to. Good luck!

(Matt Owens Rees) Another good video If the car behind is dazzling you because he has full beam on, you can, as you say, use the lever on the inside mirror to reduce the glare. You can also pull in at a safe place and let him pass if the light is too strong

Energy drink, short walk and other stimulant wont give you back you faculties and when you think it's time to call it quit, go get some sleep. It's better to be late then dead. Event if we live in a fast world of performance and efficiency. Sometime it's better to take is slow. You will still be traveling faster then any of your ancestors have in the past.

Seems that getting dazzled and blinded by lights from oncoming cars with excessive LED is the norm on those dark unlit country rds, compounded by cars following behind with their lights in your rear view mirror, they don’t like you slowing down, either.

6:45 A possible addition “Some modern cars have adaptive main beam features, which detect oncoming traffic and switch back to dipped beams automatically. But we mustn’t rely on this, and we should be prepared to manually switch back if necessary, to avoid dazzling other drivers and causing danger.”

We are allowed to glance at it, as long as we keep looking around the car as well. However, if we rely on only the camera view we will be marked down for observation as we won't know what is to the side of our car. Think of it as an extra mirror :-)
