Times of comfortable cars in endurance racing are over. Those cars are build to be as fast as possible in combination with low fuel and low tire consumption. When i think back ten years, yes - cars where build and the setup was made to put the lowest possible stresslevel into the driver. Today the competition is so hard - just finishing does not guarantee you a good place. You have to be fast also.

I don't think it was planned from the beginning. But then dieselgate started happening which instantly raised questions about money which raised questions about motorsport budget. The fact that Audi used their LMP1 program to promote their TDI (diesel) engines and technology probably didn't help either.
@sh0ckv3l337 жыл бұрын
It might be much easier then that. Let's say political even. Reminds me a bit of Mesarati Ferrari in mid 2000 with the MC12. The group might need to push the Porsche brand now redirecting founding toward that brand. Or it could be a temporary break from Audi untill some new gamebreaking ideas will come up. History told us that when Audi comes back, it will be with a platform 10 years ahead of competition (Quattro rally, IMSA GT, diesel powered R-1x and who knows what's next).

Must be some billionaire. Most sources say Audi had a budget of ca. 100-130 million Euros per season, Porsche being somewhere in that region as well. Some even say Audi had a budget of up to 240 million Euros per season. Toyota is much lower with estimated 40-70 million which can easily be seen by the lower number of cars competing.
@patrickpelletier63157 жыл бұрын
In Dubio Pro Porsche yea the money put into racing is crazy. In F1 for example, the 2014 season (the first when the 1.6L V6 Turbo Hybrid powertrains came in) Red Bull (not Toro Rosso) alone for their 2 main cars were spending 400 million for 1 year. Understandably they wanted to defend their 4 year streak but i think Mercedes-Benz was spending around 200 million. And even smaller teams like Williams and Force India were much faster than Red Bull that season

Diesel Gate started it, with VAG having to pay tens of Billions they HAD to make cuts, and with Porsche owning over 50% of VAG and the FIA diesel regulations in WEC it was right thing to do to take audio out of WEC. What's your problem with DTM? It's by far the most important racing car championship of the Germans, so it's only natural for the major German constructors to compete in it. Audi has been in there for many decades now, even in the old era of DTM in the 1980s and '90s, so it's a part of the DTM history, as well as the all-time superior Mercedes. Well, yes, Mercedes has just left, but it doesn't change my point.

Hehe, absolutely. DTM was relevant in the 80s & 90s when the competition was huge and amazing and it was also ok in the era of 2000 to 2002, but after that it went downhill steeper and steeper and never recovered. In the last years it was a totally irrelevant shadow of it former self pretending technical competition but using BOP whenever it seemed fit NASCAR-like. What a joke. There's no way back for Audi though since LMP1-H will end and it's replacement will be a fully BOPed class as worthless as DTM. Real motorsports in terms of 4-wheel racing as a whole is close to dead and as bad as F1 nowadays is compared to the early 90s I must sadly say that it'll become the last unicorn once LMP1-H is done.

I hope Audi come back with a petrol hybrid LMP1 program. I've known Audi as the main warriors of prototype endurance racing all my motorsport-fan life. As far as the German car manufacturers go, I am a BMW fan but they haven't had a prototype program for years! At least they're returning to the GTE class next year. Despite my love of BMW, it's not in my favour to have seen Audi depart the WEC and Le Mans. Whilst the Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal was very significant and justified reason for Audi's decision to pull out of it's TDI hybrid projects for Motorsport, I hope they can develop a more accepted program in the not too distant future. We only had two teams running 5 factory LMP1 cars at Le Mans this year compared to the 11 run by 4 in 2015. However, I do hope Toyota can win at Le Mans before Audi does return (if it does anyway).

Formula-E and electric cars in general have a great potential in them. They need improvements, yes, LOTS OF developments and corrections, but the time will come when electric cars will easily match the performance, durability and efficiency of the petrol and diesel cars. Having Audi, Mercedes, BMW and Nissan (basically Renault) in FE, and furthermore all of the above plus Tesla, Porsche and Volkswagen on the public roads, the improvements will most probably come way faster.

these cars are truly on a level F1 only dream about , I have to agree with this drivers words about Audi nurturing WEC to become what we have seen from Porsche and Toyota in recent yes

To show how powerful the CHAMP Indy cars from the 90's were. The 1999 lap record set at Road America (the fastest road course in the world) beat the Audi Prototype back then by over 5 seconds. Todays lmp 1 cars would be faster of course

1. Road America isn't anywhere near the fastest road course in the world. A simple google search will expand your myopic view. Monza in Italy is the fastest road course when it comes to average speeds, both in qualifying and in races. While the record average qualifying speed in Monza is 162,950mph (262,243kph) it is merely 145.428 mph for Road America. The qualifying record at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium (one of the most beloved and challenging road tracks in the world) is 149,924 mph (241,279kph). Both Monza and Spa are built on former roads and were built in the 1920's already. Prior to the modern safety-chicanes added to reduce speeds Silverstone, England saw 160mph qualifying laps in 1985 and Osterreichring, Austria saw 159,5mph in 1987. Both road tracks. 2. Who compares an endurance race car designed to race for 24 hours which optimizes the amount of performance given the frugality needed to win endurance races with a lightweight open-wheel car? How long do you think a CART would last in an endurance race? Not even 4 hours let alone 24 hours. It wouldn't even win a 3 hour race given the same amount of fuel as it would need to pit 2-3 times as many times. For an endurance car to come that close is amazing, given its weight. 3. Formula 1 cars reign supreme on any road course. *Any* . 1990's CART cars were no match for them and Montreal's circuit where there was close to a 6 second difference between the pole time for a Formula 1 car and an Indycar. I think that is pretty telling. 4. Power isn't what makes cars go fast on road courses. 70% of the speed comes from the chassis. Why? Because *cornering speeds* is what makes a race car go fastest around a road course. Road courses isn't dragracing you know. The most powerful engine in a bad chassis won't be able to utilize that power other than on straights, and that won't be enough to compensate for the other deficiency in the corners. When it comes to cornering speeds F1 has no peer. None. This is why they beat any other race car on any other road course all over the world. Note: Ovals aren't road courses. 5. Check your sources a little better next time. Local hearsay doesn't count for much in the real world I'm afraid. Whoever told you Road America is the fastest road course in the world is *wrong* .

Incredible achievement by Audi, and fantastic video. The engine on the R18 sounds like a bag of nails in a washing machine so still true to Audi diesel form on their production engines! 😉 LOVING this channel!

To me, this diesel sounds pretty good. At first when you hear it, it sounds like a petrol engine but it's a diesel. I'm impressed and it's a shame Audi left Le Mans.

This confirms my suspicions after years of racing these cars on my xbox; thoroughbred racing machines beyond compare, wow, and Id rather watch these cars than Formula E I have to say. Great vid 👍

Great video. I usually only watch the troublesome trio for cars because most reviews are a forced smile and shouting "wow" and "the feel!". Nice to have a calm, precise video that doesn't exhaust me to watch.

Golden Era? Nah.. That was in the beginning of the 90's...
@kungfucow5477 жыл бұрын
Tearoth. The late 60's and early 70's were arguably the first golden era. Ford GT40 and Porsche 917. The latter maintained the overall distance record at Le Mans for 39 years! The 1971 distance record of 5335 km is still third beaten only by the 2010 record and 2015 one. The Group C era of the 80's was the second golden era. Back then there still were no chicanes on the Mulsanne straight and aside from Porsches legendary 956/962 series the field was filled with hungry competitors from Jaguar, Lancia (LC1 and LC2 cars), Aston Martin, Sauber-Mercedes, Nissan, Mazda, Toyota and even Ford. Among them many smaller teams like Kremer, WM, Tiga, Courage and March. The spiraling costs of the early 90's meant that the cars became more akin to full-body Formula 1 cars than endurance cars. So when it became unsustainable Group C died in 1992. Some "golden era" indeed. The 1991 winner was in no contention to win the race and was a distant 4th during the night. Lucky for them all three ahead of them suffered both unexpected malfunctions and driver errors leaving it to lead the final two hours. Btw, it entered because there weren't enough privateers anymore in 1991 to make up the field. Exactly what do you base your assertion on that the early 90's was the golden era? The world went through a serious economic recession and racing suffered. Many projects got cancelled altogether and major manufacturers, such as Porsche, pulled out.

Great video, it was an interesting behind the scenes close up of those prototypes. I think if I could choose and series to race in it would be in Damon and team! I enjoy your videos so much, it's nice to get someone's feedback who can actually drive these cars in the way the were designed to be driven and hear your feedback on the handling characteristics of each particular car. Keep up the great work and I look forward to the next video(s).

I love your videos for the fact that they focus so much on the aspects of the car and driving and is a pure thrill for petrolheads like me. Also the camera angles are super as they focus more on the track and on showing how it would look were we ourselves sitting in the driver's seat and that is awesome! Great camera direction and great making
