Driving down Lombard Street is a must when visiting San Francisco

Driving Lombard Street in San Francisco had always been on my bucket list. Lombard Street is one of the most famous in the world with its steep and curvy bends. Located just five blocks from the Fisherman’s Wharf, in the heart of San Francisco, up a series of steep hills, is the famed Lombard Street, which is often dubbed the "crookedest street in the world."
At an elevation of 325’, Lombard Street takes you through 8 very steep and curvy switchbacks at a 27% grade, which means, for every 100 feet you travel, the street drops 27 feet.

I walked down Lombard Street with my dad, my classmates and my 3rd Grade teacher on the City Tour field trip that we took at my former elementary school 25 years ago in May 1998. According to my streets book, Lombard Street is named after a street located in Philadelphia, PA as surveyed by Jasper O'Farrell. It was based on The Lombardis who were well-known for their bizarre beards.

The landscaping does a LOT to enhance the experience too. If I lived there I would always set my parking brake and likely carry wheel chocks too. I think an electronic garage door opener is a requirement.

YES, I have driven down Lombard Street, by chance. WAZE took me down here, when I stayed in SFO for a week. Because we were crawling down in SLO-MO, it wasn't as scary as driving up Pikes Peak, CO!😄

Glad you enjoyed it. We actually drove right up Lombard Street off of Van Ness street. There is a park on the right hand side (George Sterling Park). I don't know if we got lucky, but there were several spots to park. FYI, it's very steep. From there you walk about half a block to Hyde Street, which is the steepest part of the switchback area. You may want to walk to the bottom and take photos from the other direction as well. After you walk it and get some photos, get back in your car and drive down. Enjoy. Thanks for watching. @@RoadTripTravel . . . Surprisingly, your response reminded me that around 1976 or 1977 my wife and I were with wife's mother & 2nd husband in S.F. His name happened to be Mike and he took us to Ernie's (if my memory is accurate) restaurant. He had good memories from eating there in WWII while he was in the U.S.Army. A good time was had by all.😃

Technically Lombard IS NOT the "Crookedest Street in the World". Technically that title belongs to Vermont Street between 20th and 22nd Streets, in San Francisco's Potrero District. City of my Birth and damn proud of it.🌉
