SAN FRANCISCO, we finally meet!
Film your bike rides with the Insta360 X3 www.insta360.c...
I went back a year later • Cycling up San Francis...
Watch Baldwin Street New Zealand! • Cycling up the World’s...
Watch my original Steep Streets video in Los Angeles • Cycling up LA’s 3 Stee...
Watch me ride up San Diego’s steepest streets
• Cycling up San Diego's...
Watch me rank California's Steepest Streets • I Rank California’s St...
Australia! • Cycling up Australia's...
This is the big one, Cycling California's Steepest Streets "Season Finale." I was surprised to learn in my research that San Francisco has several streets (Broderick St., Baker St., and Bradford St.) steeper than the Guinness World Record Offical "World's Steepest Street."

Way back in the early 2000's there was a pro bicycle race in San Francisco. Lance and the Posties were in it. I think it was called the Tour of San Francisco or something . The riders made multiple laps of the course which included some really steep hills. The nice part of watching the race on one of the hills was that the riders were really going slow so you could see then struggle and sweat. Some riders even zig zagged up the hills. I wish SF still had a big time pro race on the steep streets.

There was also a short, steep prologue time trial up Telegraph Hill to start the Coors Classic in 1986, shortly after the Tour de France had ended. Ron Kiefel of the 7-11 team, known for his uphill sprinting ability, won the stage by a solid margin. It was an impressive sight.

Hi from Dunedin. Those San Francisco climbs definitely are steeper than Baldwin. The thing about Baldwin is that it's just a perfectly regular normal street, one of hundreds of steep ones in Dunedin, and when I was a kid we never really thought much about it. It was no tourist attraction then. My youngest son has the KOM.

Well done! I guess it depends what Guinness would define as 'street'. Baldwin St in NZ is actually a two-laned vehicle road, with footpaths and houses on both sides. The 'streets' you rode are more like accessways, and the last one is really a footpath.

@@seppuku6230 "clipless" pedals are the ones you clip into. It's very confusing! I hope you had a chance to ride around in Golden Gate Park on a Sunday, or rode through the Presidio. That super steep part of Baker, that comes out on Broadway, is beside the mansion of one of the Spreckles sisters, or used to be anyway, she would have passed away by now. My best friend knew her personal assistant, so we got a tour of the house. I am pretty sure that entire wall you are riding next to is the side of the house. That place was 5 stories, on the side of the hill. Great view of Alcatraz. She had a Picasso in her kitchen. The Getty's owned the house across the street. I lived in SF for 4 years and commuted by bicycle about 99% of the time, GREAT bike city. A lot of steep streets, but there are a lot of ways to go where you don't see too much traffic. A few months after the earthquake, I almost got killed going down Broderick near the Marina. Apparently, there was damage to a sewer pipe or something, which washed the ground out under the road, which collapsed. I was going to my friend's place on Greenwich, sort of near where they did the car chase in Bullitt. The road was just gone, big ass hole. I almost went in, I was going sort of fast, but swerved around it. I went and stood in the street until a car came, so he could block it, and went to ring someone's doorbell to call the cops, or whoever you call for a big hole in the street. Lady poked her head out the window and was yelling for me to quit ringing her bell. She looked up, saw the hole and about fell out of her window. It was pretty freaky

@@MitchBoyer Thank you. Lived there 4 years. It was very easy to get around SF on a bike, maybe especially after the earthquake. I rode out to where the Bay Bridge collapsed on the lower deck from the SF side. It is steeper on the bridge than it seems Mountain bike. You want to be able to spin those pedals going up those big hills. There are a lot of places there that have short steep pitches, especially those half ass not really a street streets below Broadway and all those Pacific Heights mansions. When the sidewalk is steps, you know it is pretty steep

The steep hills of San Francisco are the reason for high maintenance costs on diesel buses in the city's public transportation system. Buses have broken down on Sacramento Street going up Nob Hill forcing passengers to disembark and walk up the hill. Three diesel bus lines have since been converted to electric trolleybuses.

I remember Tony Rominger was trying that size wheels in the 94 Tour to have a lighter set of wheels plus gearing as they didn't have the gearing they do today.

This was edge-of-my-seat epic stuff Mitch! Love your quest mode and stoke up that last wall. Curious about your gearing on that bike though. I'd want my 32-34 for that stuff. Looking forward to more like this from you!

I was riding a 36-34. It was totally fine fine for SF. Lots of steep streets, but all relatively short 0:30-1:00 efforts. For longer efforts you definitely want a larger range

This was SO awesome. What an inspired, perfect choice of music when you finally started climbing from the wall-push.! It took my breath away and I found myself clenching the blanket the whole way up. I remember before I got into cycling seeing the cyclists going up hills at as snail's pace and I'd joke "it'd be faster to just get off and walk, yada yada" and while that may be true... what former me didn't know is that: yes, the ground IS lava and you HAVE TO stay on the bike or your feet WILL literally BURN if they touch the ground. Now I know and knowing is half the battle.

Best hill climbing or street climbing video ever. You deserve to make the sticker for your bike and share it. GO CLIMB A STREET. I’m in Hawaii on Oahu we have some gnarly Streets here and steeper ones on the Island of Maui and The Big Island. Thanks for an awesome video. Aloha, Sammy D

I've lived in SF for a while and I bought my first ever road bike. I was living in Lombard and there are a lot of ridiculous climbing there. My favourite place though is a very soft climb to the hawk hill towards Rodeo Beach

I climb Baker and Broderick streets on foot with some regularity. I definitely take frequent breaks but never thought of them as streets. They're just crazy sidewalks. And what about the sidewalks with stairs? Do they also count or not? Because at some grade you're going to install steps.

Great video! I might be one of the only (if not the only?) people in the world that has done Dunedin, Dirty Dozen, all of those SF hills (except Baker…madness) and Waipio in Hawaii. Dunedin is a joke, not that steep. It took me 6 tries to get up Canton in Pittsburgh, not necessarily because of the steepness (37%) but because of the slick, irregular cobbles. Waipio is the the hardest because of the length (1 mile!). But I still haven’t made it up Broderick. I spin out every single time at 47%. Brutal! Well done making it up. I think the key to Baker is taking a mountain bike up those stairs so you don’t have to start in the incline lol.

Oh man, you're out here living my dream! Interesting to hear your thoughts. I've wondered about the cobbles on Canton--they look pretty deep in all the pictures. Thanks for watching dude! Once I catch up and complete them all, we'll have to compare notes.

I was traveling to Euboea Greece, and I had an AirBnB booked for the night. The street to reach it was easily ~30% if not more. In addition, it was super narrow and very curly.

I really enjoyed this video. I've been planning to ride some of the steepest climbs in the USA. Looks like I only have to go to San Francisco and I can try several. Next year I'm attempting another climbing challenge, beach to Mauna Kea Summit in Kona, HI, USA. I've heard its the Strava segment with the longest continuous climb (13,788 ft elevation difference) in the world, but as I learned on this video, you have to ask the world's cycling community because maybe someone knows of an even longer continuous climb somewhere on the globe.

192 heart beats per minute says it all. I've rarely hit that rate during my mountain rides; but every time I do, I need two days to properly recover. Legs may feel okay, but the heart: "Not today, buddy!"

Now go across the bay and ride up Marin Avenue in Berkeley from The Circle at Arlington Avenue. What it lacks in grade (not much) it more than makes up for in length.
