Way back in the early 2000's there was a pro bicycle race in San Francisco. Lance and the Posties were in it. I think it was called the Tour of San Francisco or something . The riders made multiple laps of the course which included some really steep hills. The nice part of watching the race on one of the hills was that the riders were really going slow so you could see then struggle and sweat. Some riders even zig zagged up the hills. I wish SF still had a big time pro race on the steep streets.

There was also a short, steep prologue time trial up Telegraph Hill to start the Coors Classic in 1986, shortly after the Tour de France had ended. Ron Kiefel of the 7-11 team, known for his uphill sprinting ability, won the stage by a solid margin. It was an impressive sight.

Hi from Dunedin. Those San Francisco climbs definitely are steeper than Baldwin. Romolo Pl. in the North Beach area of San Francisco between Vallejo St. and Fresno St. is one of the steepest streets that you can still drive on with a 37%+ grade over the entire length. It falls over 26ft. over its 70ft. length. The street is gouged in several places at the bottom of the slope where the rear bumpers of cars routinely bottom out. It's right near Columbus and Broadway behind the Jack Kerouac Museum (amongst other things if you know Broadway).

I hope you had a chance to ride around in Golden Gate Park on a Sunday, or rode through the Presidio. That super steep part of Baker, that comes out on Broadway, is beside the mansion of one of the Spreckles sisters, or used to be anyway, she would have passed away by now. My best friend knew her personal assistant, so we got a tour of the house. I am pretty sure that entire wall you are riding next to is the side of the house. That place was 5 stories, on the side of the hill. Great view of Alcatraz. She had a Picasso in her kitchen. The Getty's owned the house across the street. I lived in SF for 4 years and commuted by bicycle about 99% of the time, GREAT bike city. A lot of steep streets, but there are a lot of ways to go where you don't see too much traffic. A few months after the earthquake, I almost got killed going down Broderick near the Marina. Apparently, there was damage to a sewer pipe or something, which washed the ground out under the road, which collapsed. I was going to my friend's place on Greenwich, sort of near where they did the car chase in Bullitt. The road was just gone, big ass hole. I almost went in, I was going sort of fast, but swerved around it. I went and stood in the street until a car came, so he could block it, and went to ring someone's doorbell to call the cops, or whoever you call for a big hole in the street. Lady poked her head out the window and was yelling for me to quit ringing her bell. She looked up, saw the hole and about fell out of her window. It was pretty freaky

I've "run" Baker many times, it being a reasonable return from the Marina into the central city, but I find it too steep for running. I never considered it plausible anyone had ever ridden it, given the lack of access from the bottom. I also recommend 22nd from Church to Vicksburg and the paved 24th Street from Vermont to De Haro, each claimed 31.5% and legitimate thru streets, but the latter cobblestones, which increase the challenge. Very nice video!

For those wondering how to convert % steepness into the degrees of an angle, set your favorite scientific calculator to degrees-mode and take the arc-tangent of the percentage. Example: If you want to convert a 36.1% slope into degrees then you would do tan‾¹(0.361) = 19.85°.
