Thanks for taking the time to post this leisurely drive around Anchorage. It's amazing how little it has changed since I last visited in 1995-or is my memory playing tricks on me?

There are a couple new buildings, there’s a nice bank being built and they’re in the process of demolishing the 4th Avenue theater to replace it with something else. I forget what I was told it would be but we’ll ride by once it’s done.

All of this. The landscape does change quickly, very often. We had ice fog this morning and then the sun came out and everything was sparkly.

I picked up a really nice blond lady at the Spenard Cocktail Lounge. After spending the night I was driving her home. She reached into her purse and took out a hockey puck. She laughed, tossed it into the dash of my 1976 Sierra Grande and said "hers a puck for the f*ck! Never a dull moment in Anchortown of the 70's.

In Alaska in the past they only closed the bars between 1:00am and 1:30 to restock. We would go to the liquor store, buy a jar and drink it until the bars reopened.

I flew on a Lockheed Super Constellation in December if 1954. It was my first (and best) plane ride. We attended the start of the Iditarod that winter. Still the best sporting event ever! Anchorage was very small and a great place for a kid in those days. I have fond memories of those days with my cousins.

I was sitting in my taxi on 4th Ave in front of the Hunter Bar. I noticed a young oilfield workers type of guy walking towards me on the sidewalk. Every time he came upon another person he would hit them in the face. He did this for about ten blocks and finally turned off about five blocks past me. No one seemed to notice him!

I've never been to Anchorage but I would love to visit it sometime. Alaska is 1 of only 2 states I have never been to.

One time while driving my taxi in 1974 I went down an alley and noticed five Aleuts cooking a salmon in a hubcap. Another day in Anchorage.

In 1974 I was sitting on a barstool at a bar on 4th Ave. There was an older native American couple sitting to my. Left. The man turned to his wife and said "Honey you have eyes like a salmon" he then fell backwards stool and all like a log. His wife turned, gazed at him for a moment with a nonchalant look and then turned back, took a drink, took a draw on her cigarette and stared at the band.

My uncle got picked up for drunk driving in Anchorage. They let him go on personal recognizance. He got in his car and backed into the police chiefs car. Needless to say he went right back into lockup. That was in Anchorage on 1967.

This is just the sort of thing i do when traveling. Slowly drive through a new town, checking it out. Add in a brief areal view, and a short conversation or 2 with locals, and i may never need to travel again. Or VR? Fairly large town, about 300,000 people. I wonder how the average person likes living there. Whats the industry?

Once my uncle Stan was sitting on a barstool in the Hunter bar circa 1973. The bartender kept poking his finger in a hole in his T shirt. My uncle thought he was coming on to him and became irate. He reached for the bartenders collar and hoisted him up in the air whereupon he fell on my uncle and they landed together on n the floor. My uncle had two broken ribs. He said it served him right for overreacting!

I’d say it all depends on where you live. I’ve seen crime happen and still feel safe when I’m hanging out. Welcome to the 49th! (whenever your move is). Google a crime map for the areas you’re considering, that will help a lot.

Downtown Anchorage is very gray, small and boring. There is a mall that is always empty, some little restaurants and shops and government buildings and thousands of homeless people wandering around. Our public trashcans are cruelly locked. Lots of closed businesses and lots of parking lots. It looks like a city that never had a city planner.
