Driving Downtown - Montreal Quebec Canada - Episode 52.
Starting Point: Rue Saint-Catherine goo.gl/maps/y8... .
Montreal is the most populous municipality in the Canadian province of Quebec and the second-most populous municipality in Canada as a whole. Originally called Ville-Marie, or "City of Mary", it is named after Mount Royal, the triple-peaked hill in the heart of the city. The city is centred on the Island of Montreal, which took its name from the same source as the city, and a few much smaller peripheral islands, the largest of which is Île Bizard. It has a distinct four-season continental climate with warm to hot summers and cold, snowy winters.
In 2016 the city had a population of 1.7 million. Montreal's metropolitan area had a population of 4.1 million. French is the city's official language and is the language spoken at home by 49.8% of the population of the city, followed by English at 22.8% and 18.3% other languages. The agglomeration Montreal is one of the most bilingual cities in Quebec and Canada, with over 59% of the population able to speak both English and French. Montreal is the second-largest primarily French-speaking city in the world, after Paris.
Historically the commercial capital of Canada, Montréal was surpassed in population and in economic strength by Toronto in the 1970s. It remains an important centre of commerce, aerospace, transport, finance, pharmaceuticals, technology, design, education, art, culture, tourism, food, fashion, gaming, film and world affairs. Montreal has the second-highest number of consulates in the coninent, serves as the location of the location of the headquarters of the International Civil Aviation Organization, and was named a UNESCO City of Design in 2006. In 2017, Montreal was ranked the 12th most liveable city in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit in its annual Global Liveability Ranking, and the best city in the world to be a university student in the QS World University Rankings.
Montreal has hosted multiple international conferences and events, including the 1967 International and Universal Exposition and the 1976 Summer Olympics. It is the only Canadian city to have held the Summer Olympics. As of 2016 the city hosts the Canadian Grand Prix of Formula One, the Montreal International Jazz Festival and the Just for Laughs festival. In 2012, Montreal was ranked as a Beta-plus world city.
Economy
Montreal has the second-largest economy of Canadian cities based on GDP and the largest in Quebec. In 2014, Metropolitan Montreal was responsible for C$118.7 billion of Quebec's C$340.7 billion GDP. The city is today an important centre of commerce, finance, industry, technology, culture, world affairs and is the headquarters of the Montreal Exchange.
Culture
Montreal was referred to as "Canada's Cultural Capital" by Monocle magazine. The city is Canada's centre for French-language television productions, radio, theatre, film, multimedia, and print publishing. Montreal's many cultural communities have given it a distinct local culture.
Sports
The most popular sport is ice hockey. The professional hockey team, the Montreal Canadiens, is one of the Original Six teams of the National Hockey League (NHL), and has won an NHL-record 24 Stanley Cup championships. The Canadiens' most recent Stanley Cup victory came in 1993. They have major rivalries with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins both of which are also Original Six hockey teams. The Canadiens have played at the Bell Centre since 1996. Prior to that they played at the Montreal Forum.
Climate
Montreal is classified as a humid continental climate. Summers are, on the whole, warm and humid with a daily maximum average of 26 to 27 °C (79 to 81 °F) in July. Winter brings cold, snowy, windy, and, at times, icy weather, with a daily average ranging from −9 to −10.5 °C (16 to 13 °F) in January.

I lived in Montreal all of 2017, I got cancer is July of that year and had to return back to Australia in dec. I pretty much lived in the city at la marq, seeing this just brings back so many memories, I hope to get a job back there in five or so years, I have to wait till I’m 100 in remission.

Montreal in winter, YES! I remember it well, I used to live there and loved it!!! I love that there are lots of people walking around, even in winter! There are more people walking around Montreal on a cold winter day than there are in La, Dallas or Atlanta on a nice, summer day!
@edsal5528
@edsal5528 6 жыл бұрын
You are comparing apples and oranges, Montreal is a centralized city that density decreases as you head away from the city center.. while Dallas, Los Angeles, and Atlanta are de-centralized cities, meaning that there are 3 to 4 different city centers. Montreal was also built before the automobile, while the other cities were built during the automobile era. More suitable cities to compare would be Boston, Philly, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Chicago,Denver....etc

Yes your points are valid and I think that's the reason people like visiting Montreal, the downtown is usually active with a lot of people on the streets. I don't want to offend anyone but Montreal and Toronto are the only Canadian cities with real action on the street (Vancouver is so so). I've been to all large Canadian cities and the places are ghost towns. I've been to lots of medium sized U.S cities and they too are ghost towns. I just came back from Tampa FL, its a very nice city, with some nice architecture and views but the downtown was dead. It seems to me that not a lot of people LIVE downtown in these cities. Office workers come in for work then at 5:00 they take off - back to the burbs.

@9grand 6 жыл бұрын
@@louiszhang3050 . it is not ,because you could not speak french well , but may be like many 'immigrants' you prefer to speak in english in a french speaking society! It is quite rude actually. Like many , you do not know much about the history of Canada. Until the beginning of the 19th century, the term 'Canadian' was applied to french descents from this part of the world.It is only later that the 'english' started to appropriate the name. As such the genuine canadians are the ' french' , same as a the national anthem which is in fact a french canadian song. And please do not tell me french is too hard to master. Because i do not think that the immigrants in Canada is more stupid than the one in France. Because I can assure you that in France you will be able to speak within one year ,because the french are not as nice ( soft) as the french canadian . ( At Rome do as Roman)

Montrealer here: Nice video. Got hooked on your channel by watching your recent Buenos Aires night drive. If (when) you come back, you gotta do it in late spring, summer, or early autumn. Montreal is indeed a special place during the winter, but 24 hours after a snow storm, all that pristine white snow quickly turns into brown and back slush. Also: Constant road works in Montreal have made driving here a nightmare. Best to return when all is completed… in about 2049 ;-)

European come to Montréal for its very North American feel, while North Americans come to the city for its European vibe. No wonder we struggle to define who we are.

St-Catherine, going East, from (roughly) Atwater (where the old "Forum" - old home of the Montreal Canadiens used to be). At 9:30, we turn left on La Gauchetière. "Why do I care?" you ask. Only because of an old Montreal joke: a police officer dragged a dead horse all the way from La Gauchetière to Peel Street. Why? Because, for his report, he did not know how to spell La Gauchetière, but he knew how to spell Peel. (Cyniques, late 1960s) By 25:48, (we are on University, going north) it is clear that this driver is simply driving aimlessly around that portion of Montreal. But we don't care, because he is filming. We (Montrealers) recognize all the sights. By 27:50 you are thinking "Wow, this must have been a very unlucky day for that driver" No! this is a normal day in downtown Montreal. [This is why I never use my own car in downtown Montreal). Should this discourage you from visiting Montreal? NO! However, it should tell you that, once you have found a parking for your car, please leave it there. Even I (a Montrealer from birth) do that.
