I had an ambulance the other day with its blues on approaching a crossroad with traffic lights I was going through on green and the saw the side of the road they were on was blocked by cars and knew it would be easier for them and the traffic at the lights if they just went around the traffic Island and through the crossroads on the oposite side so I put my hazards and pulled into the cycle lane next to me I checked it was clear before hand and of course all the other traffic behind me halted too so the ambulance driver was able to go straight without incident. I'd be interested in your thoughts on the VW lane assist - I've recently started driving an ID3 which I assume has the same system as your Golf. I find it disconcerting at best, but mostly dangerous. Situations like the one in your video where you meet the tractor are the perfect example: I'd naturally take a position towards the left of the lane as I approached the blind corner and it complains. Then when you move right to the edge of the road to let the tractor past it actively tries to steer you towards it. If you don't stay perfectly centred in the lane on corners - often not the best road position - it changes the weight of the steering. I think it feels like hitting black ice. And in town driving it's actively tried to steer me into cycle lanes where the paint is worn or where it's identified by a different surface colour rather than white lines.

I hired a Hyundai Ioniq a couple of years ago with lane assist. There’s a section of the A64 westbound near Leeds where the lane widens and splits, so a white line appears in the middle of the lane, and at 60-70mph it would be unreasonable to try and conform to the curvature of the nearside white line. It confused the system which near enough threw me across the lane to the right, which I was able to correct, but it would have been far more dangerous at a busier time of day.

I just went for a 2 week trip in Ireland, driving around the whole island, did 1378 miles in total. I found that the driver attitude in Ireland is so much better than in England, people were relaxed, no issues, let each other out and improve flow for all. Coincidently as soon as I got back in England on the way home, I got tailgated and flashed because I was overtaking a car on a 2 line dual carriageway and another car came up behind going way over the speed limit. Then when I had finished my overtake and returned the the left lane in front of the car I overtook, the speeding car behind came by and in front an brake checked me. No problems because I expected it as soon as he came in front, and didn’t use my horn as it would be a waste of time. Makes me laugh when they are in so much of a rush but have time to do that. Attitudes are definitely a lot worse in England. (This was on the A453 towards Nottingham)
@MeTheCoolDude2 жыл бұрын
The thing I like in Ireland is the yellow markings on the sides of roads, people just know if they are impeding flow, they move into that space to allow traffic to continue. With heavy vehicles, if you give them hazards as a thank you, you'll probably get a flash as a you're welcome. It's excellent!

I'm from Ireland originally and I completely agree with what you are saying. There are idiot drivers over there, but the vast majority are far more patient and considerate to everyone around them. I think it's two things. 1. There is a lot more emphasis on road safety in Ireland. You see far more Garda (Police) on the road, conducting checkpoints and mobiles speed vans are everywhere. 2. General public attitude. Not trying to be biased, but people in Ireland are generally more friendly to one another in comparison to folk in the UK. I think it boils down to community spirit. People in Ireland in general are far more involved in community activities and sport. Here in the UK, people generally appear to be a lot more insular.

A cyclist fell onto the road today in Southampton in front of my car after hitting a bin. It was on a 30mph dual carriageway and the cyclist was cycling around the ending of a lay-by which meant the path angled towards the road before being parallel. However, the cyclist caught his handle bar on a bin and fell onto the road with his head almost hitting the centre of my lane in the road. I think it might be to your videos that I prepared for the worst and braked as the cyclist turned towards the road following the path before he fell off. This meant I had enough distance to break and avoid what could have been something a lot worst. The cyclist was thankfully OK and cycled away, id like to give you credit though Ashley as creating a channel like this and putting all of the time into it as it may not benefit you particularly, but is benefitting for many other people, and preparing them for the worst. Dear Ash, quick question. I was entering a mini roundabout T junction, intending to turn right. To my right were two cars entering the roundabout (single lane entrance) with their left turn signals blinking. I deemed it safe to enter and was following the correct path around the mini roundabout. In my peripheral vision I notice the second car did not turn left as indicated, and actually speeding towards me over the white roundabout circle. I instinctively take evasive action and accelerate out of his way, taking my exit as intended, albeit a bit faster than anticipated. Thankfully there were no pedestrians or other cars on my exit. What are your thoughts about this situation?
@543567762 жыл бұрын
Don't rely on indicators being used correctly. Look at what the vehicle is doing and if you're not sure then just wait. I don't think you did anything wrong here, you did the right thing by avoiding the idiot and continuing with your journey. The top of my street has a mini roundabout t-junction like you described and it's amazing that I've never had an accident on it. Quite often vehicles will just drive straight through and not even look let alone slow down. Edited for spelling.

As long as you had enough distance in front of the first car in case it actually went ahead (or it had a very clear position to go left), then IMHO you did nothing wrong and could not know the second car was lying. Good reaction, but check for pedestrians!

Fantastic stuff - your face on the in-car camera is a picture Ashley when these things happen! 4:54 - it's a really interesting point about straight ahead at multi-lane roundabouts. I've almost found myself being guilty of that a few times but just caught it. When someone rectifies a mistake like that I do like to make a point of saying thank you if I can and it's safe - having been the person having the 'oops I've effed up there' moment myself enough times.

I live in a village in the middle of nowhere in Denmark and it's a very small village, maybe 20 houses at most and a straight road through. We've had alot of problems with people speeding through at over 80 km/h, some likely in the hundreds when the speed limit should be 50 km/h. We've had mulitple much loved cats killed by traffic as well as tragically, one of the children in the village. It took that much plus many complains before the municipality finally set up temporary "your speed" signs and eventually added road slaloms, which seem to have helped abit but there are still problems. I don't know what it's like in the UK but apparently here you can send an application ask the police to set up a speed camera van, I've not been paying attention to the average speed but maybe it's worth seeing if they can get one of those out here.

Generally I've found that the further south you go, the worse it gets for aggressive driving. I had to drive from Scotland all the way down to Kent one time, the first half of the journey was pretty relaxed, few issues and most people gave plenty space etc. Once I got to within about 50 miles of the Dartford crossing, the motorway was like a total dogfight, you'd be lucky to have anything more than a half second gap behind you, and if you left more than a half second gap in front of you, people just shoved into the space. 11:54 Why start creeping when there are cars approaching? I hate it when people start creeping when I am approaching. How do I know that they are merely creeping or if they are actually pulling out? You have to think about what you are communicating with your actions. In this case it is ambiguous. When I am on the motorcycle and someone starts creeping, I take evasive action, usually hard braking.

There used to be a panopticism around red lights, where people would feel as though proscecution for running one was a foregone conclusion. After years of police cuts and a few people taking chances, most people have realised that they are no being watched, they are unlikely to be caught, and there is no penalty to stopping. This is why everyone that can afford to should have a dashcam and report any inicidents they record, no matter how small it may seem. We need to get people thinking that they are always being watched and there's a high probability they will get caught.

Something you can often spot about cars with more aggressive drivers is that their front wheels tend to be noticeably darker than the rear ones. This is a build up of brake dust (and cars' front brakes usually do significantly more work than the rears) and indicates two things 1. The dust has had time to accumulate, they may not care about the car very much to wash it so they also may not care about trading paint. 2. The amount of dust accumulated hints they do a *lot* of heavy braking which likely means they are going at higher speeds and getting very close to other vehicles before they decide to slow down.

I'm curious with the clip @4:52 even though on that roundabout you can go straight from the left hand lane, If there is an exit before your intended exit are you not supposed to have your right hand indicator on and then when you are on or at the first exit you then indicate to let other road users know that you are taking the next exit? Maybe you did have yours on but I didn't hear the ticking of the indicator until you indicated left.
@PedroConejo19392 жыл бұрын
There's no need to indicate right if you are going straight on. It's something that crops up in some areas on the country, I found Pembrokeshire was one such place. I asked a friend why he did it and his reply was because he wasn't turning left. It can be confusing for drivers genuinely turning right, who don't know what to expect if the car in the left lane is also indicating right.
@alastairqueen79732 жыл бұрын
Right hand indicator for going 'straight on?' This is something that is not only incorrect, [as per Highway Code, and any Driver Instructor] but also can lead to very annoying misleading indications! I can understand why non-expert drivers do as you mention, because they are concerned about vehicles pulling out in front, in contravention of the road markings. Any driver or rider at a roundabout, looking to their right, should know that a right turn signal, or no signal, means the vehicle from the right is intending to pass across in front. However, the reality is, there are folk who simply ignore the Highway Code, RTA, etc. These must be allowed for when negotiating nay roundabout, by using a speed whereby f someone does leap out in front, they can be coped with comfortably . The road signs and markings prior to a roundabout inform road users as to how they need to signal, for the intended exit road. There are three indications of intended direction a driver or rider can give. Left indication, right indication, and no indication, which means, the intention is to go 'straight on'. Where giving a 'right turn' signal, but not intending to turn right, can become a 'confusing signal' arises when a driver/rider is waiting at the 'give way' line, on the road you intend to exit down. They see you come round, showing a right turn signal, so they, too, rightly presume you are going to cross in front of them....and you don't! Those split seconds often mean a driver is left waiting at that give--way line longer than they need to, due to your 'confusing' signal...especially if they have seen you enter from 'ahead'. Then there is the driver /rider who is slightly behind you before you enter the roundabout? They intend to turn right, but they see your 'right turn' signal whilst you are on the left, so are either compelled to hold back [when they may not need to due to the width of carriageway?] or maybe even take overtly abrupt evasive action, because of your right turn' signal...but you go straight on, instead. Whilst you may not care about the inconveniences you cause to others [as long as you get your way?], try doing such indication whilst undergoing a Driving Test, and see what transpires?
@jpboland78012 жыл бұрын
@@alastairqueen7973 interesting as when I learned to drive about 15 years ago(dublin, ireland) I was thought to treat a roundabout like a clock. Anything before 12oclock use left hand lane but if not taking first exit use right hand indicator and then when approaching your intended exit indicate left whist doing basic checks(mirror, signal, mirror, manover). If your intended exit is past 12oclock then use right hand lane and indicate accordingly unless otherwise indicated by road markings or signs. Unless of course you live and drive in Essex then it's everyman for themselves and others need to guess where your going and god help you if you guess wrong 😅

The last bit i have two roundabouts i go straight on at the first and have to indication right to stop people from pulling out in front of me. the last one is a mini roundabout and i go right but all the oncoming think they have priority and go straight over the top of it forcing me to wait or get a dent. Here in North Cardiff we now have a 20mph limit on almost every urban road (understood to be applying to all of Wales next year). Guess how many drivers adhere to it - even the bus drivers don't in general, never mind taxi drivers! Appears so far to have resulted in even more tailgating, pointless and dangerous overtakes (they just arrive at the next lights slightly sooner) and more red light jumping than usual.
@gravemind65362 жыл бұрын
Thats because most of the places with these 20mph zones are meant to be 30mph zones and the new speed limit is incredibly slow. 20mph zones used to only be used on roads that were narrow, have tight junctions with poor visibility and lots of parked cars all over the place. Now they stick them on perfectly straight roads that can easily fit two artics through have decent junctions and visibility and few parked cars on the road and very few pedestrian numbers. Even in many city enviroments where there are higher numbers of people they don't make sense and actually cause more friction. But then again these new 20mph zones are not about safety like they want people to believe its to try and force motorists off the road by making it slow and painful to actually get anywhere

I was going at 20 in one of these speed limit areas on a main artery and pedestrians even thought I was giving way to them from going so slow, so they walked into a collision course with my car.
