So much going on in these clips, it's difficult to know where to begin. It's so important to learn to spot the person who's going to do something stupid a long time before the notion passes through their mind - though the make of vehicle can be an indicator. Clios have joined the Honda Jazz as the car of choice for that particular category of cluelessness. Mobile phones, Pot Noodles and delivery lists seem to be the weapon of choice for distracting van drivers, as well as that awful habit of interlocking hands on the top of the steering wheel. I totally agree with the comment @ 7:22 that people's ability to stay between lines is diminishing. It is for this reason that I am very reluctant to follow the advice that you approach left hand bends on the outside of your lane. Time and again I've met people coming the other way who have no concept of 'their side of the road', whether they be a 19-year-old in a 'customised' Polo (ie. seat lowered so he can't see over the dash) or Good Ol' Vern or Vicky in their Volvo.
@R04drunner13 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. For the IAM, cornering priorities are: 1 Safety 2. Visibility 3. Stability in that order! So by all means drive to improve visibility and stability (where it is safe, seek to be on the offside of your lane coming up to a left hand bend) but the safety aspect takes priority. Coming up to an acute blind left hand bend, it's safer to be a little bit slower and stay towards the centre or nearside of your lane. All too often, somebody from the other direction cuts the corner and ends up over the line!

What a coincidence clip 1, as I had just edited a video on that exact roundabout at Chesterfield. Clip 10 there is one thing that could have been done differently and that would have been to sound the horn as both the motorbike and cyclist were blind to each other, this is something I do quite often and people do misunderstand and think I am sounding it at someone when in reality I am trying to warn others that a situation is happening that they may not be aware of. Clip 18 is very frightening and simply down to the driver being distracted, this happened to me in 2013 when I swerved off the road with the lorry to avoid a head on with a car, she still hit me but at an angle in the offside, so no injuries. Clip 24 when you said about being seen in a bright coloured car, you ought to have added "eventually". Some shocking stuff out there Ashley. All the best.

Hi. I posted clip 10 and made the same comment about using the horn when I sent it to Ashley, but if I had have done so then there was the possibility that the pedal cyclist would have stopped directly in the path of the motorbike with awful consequences. In my rear view cam (which hasn't been shown) you can see how the biker approaches well in excess of the 40 MPH limit overtaking a row of cars and only comes into my view at the point you hear me exclaim when it was apparent the biker was still going too fast but was also overtaking in the zig zag zone. It was a heart stopping moment which happened very quickly.

But you can actually see the reflection of his front right indicator light on the red car. 4:51 Also, expect cars to leave the queue cause they're tired of waiting. If you can, just put a lane between you and them. It's the safest thing to do. This is one situation where you should consider throwing the "always keep to the left hand lane" rule out the window. 6:20 I swear, that reminds me of how toddlers turn around and cover their eyes and think they're invisible. It was classed as an advanced technique and not to be covered on a CBT or DAS course. You can see the body language of the rider in the clip, he is using his upper body to get the bike to lean. A little pressure on his left handlebar would have got the correct line. This is still an issue 20 years after a stopped being an instructor. Last year I overheard a 125 rider rueing the fact she couldn't get the bike around faster corners, so I asked if she'd been taught counter-steering. Alas she had not. I spent ten minutes going over how it worked, why you should use it and how to safely practice it. I don't normally comment on these vids and choose to just lean from them, but I kinda know how that following instructor must have felt. It's sometimes enough to want to hang up your instructor bib.

clip 17 - following that overtake up by immediately looking to overtake at least 2 more vehicles straight after it :O I get that the dashcam might distort the view/speeds involved a little, but surely if you have a close call like that its better to start being extra cautious until you can get it out of your mind (there might be extra adrenaline coursing through you after something like that, so just slow down a little?)

In the very first clip, the caravan may actually be considered to have priority by certain standards, since the only reason they needed to move left was due to a roadworks that caused a zipper merge situation. Since the cammer was reluctant to let the caravan in, they were effectively trying to pass right before a zipper merge, which is obviously not proper.

More and more I'm convinced that mini roundabouts are just outright dangerous. An explicit give-way is probably a safer way of managing those junctions or (god forbid) lights.

I have been a driver of 12 years. Recently in March my car was written off just a few miles outside of Glasgow by a speeding BMW hitting me from behind on the M74 after he lost control on some snow causing me to spin out 180 and crash into the central median. He wrote my car off, and there was nothing I could do to stop it. Seeing how people drive in these clips puts me off getting behind the wheel again because goodness knows when someone is going to do something utterly stupid just to try to save a few minutes.

Totally agree. I can back this up with a real world example. My mate had a banger MK3 escort. To stop the tin worm, he brush painted it, but the only colour he had was matt battleship grey. This was terrible choice as it was almost urban camouflage and we had people pulling out in front of us regularly.

7:58 I think it's possible that it was low visibility where the sun made it difficult/blinded the van driver and thus didn't catch the oncoming car. Especially if it was a car with colors easily disguised by the sunshine But that doesn't excuse the vandriver. Other factors could be distractions as a mobile phone or adjusting the radio etc. But I suspect by the time of day and hoe the sun is positioned its the sunshine blinding him/her.

23: godwful junction design. The Dutch (and since recently Cambridge) know how to do cycle lanes round roundabouts. The UK, in general, does not (I hope the new design manual the local transport note 20/1 will be applied retroactively to junctions like this). Well done to person on bike for spotting and being able to deal with it, and not being too furious with it. Still terrible driving from the person in the red car. "Must get past the bike" needs to stop. How upset would the driver have been if the bike rider had taken the general purpose lane to go ahead? It's behaviour like that the primary position, and not being obliged to use cycle lanes, exists to prevent.
@nickbooker55793 жыл бұрын
Further to 23: (1) I was being a bit harsh here especially to the engineers at the coal face designing the thing, sorry, I tend to get a bit cross when I see things like that and my vision zero/systematic safety envy kicks in (though it looks like, at least in Warwickshire, that might be coming soon). The engineers of the roundabout in this clip were likely designing to now-outdated guidelines and terrible budgets. However it does seem evident with a lot of cycle infra installed in the UK while I've been walking this Earth is designed by people who don't cycle. (2) Correction the new manual is the LTN1/20 not 20/1, my bad.
@Umski3 жыл бұрын
I go round that one in Cambridge occasionally as a car driver - it is lethal unless you are fully aware that you need to look out for cyclists as the blind spots are huge as you approach - many drivers are looking at the point where they need to stop to give way to cars, NOT the cycle lane that's a few yards before that and if a cyclist comes round too quickly then it's a lose-lose situation - it's 20mph zone too but many drivers couldn't give two hoots about that. Until driver education improves around cyclists and respecting that they are road users this roundabout will be a one-off I imagine or someone will die and they will change it back :(
@thromboid3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't seem ideal to have the slower and less visible road users approach the roundabout on the left but have priority (IIUC for the UK). I would have thought, for a single-lane roundabout at least, that having all traffic approach and enter the roundabout in single file would be safer (provided the cyclists can safely merge beforehand) - after all, all traffic should be slowing for the roundabout anyway.
@nickbooker55793 жыл бұрын
@@thromboid yes in this case I think no lane at all is better than what it currently has. The lane would make me feel compelled on pain of assault or violence to ride in the most vulnerable position. I've pointed out a road in my area which has similar issues and the response from the council has been encouraging - it was built to old standards and they're reviewing that corridor already for improvement. If the cammer is reading this: you might want to engage with your local highway authority (or cycle advocacy group if you have one) to let them know this incident happened, and give them an idea of frequency if it happens regularly. If they don't know they can't do anything about it. Also look out for LCWIP and Active Travel Plan consultations happening in the area. If you're in Warwickshire, also consider taking part in the Warwickshire road safety partnership's consultation on its road safety strategy to 2030 (it's on my to-do list). It includes vision zero and systematic safety ("safe systems" is the way they're phrasing it) and if that's planned and implemented well it will really help with safety of VRUs and drivers alike. If you like what you see please voice your support because supporters of change tend to stay too quiet and get drowned out by the vocal opponents. If you're not in Warwickshire your local authority may have something similar in the pipeline too.
@nickbooker55793 жыл бұрын
Oh if you talk to your council please be more constructive and civil than my original comment on this was, and don't quote anything I said that you don't personally agree with. I've already apologised for the tone of my original post. They're not ogres and they're not stupid, but they will probably welcome constructive criticism. They may just be unaware of the issue and may have been working under certain constraints and to old standards when the junction was put in.

@BrightonandHoveActually3 жыл бұрын
At 1:35, I agree, Ashley. The reason I agree is that the cammer drove over, rather than round, the roundabout. I say this because, allowing for the distorted perspective of the camera, I think the two vehicles entered the roundabout at exactly the same time - or as near to the same time as makes no difference. This means that, had the cammer gone round, rather than over, the roundabout the other car would have cleared his route before he got there. I accept that it is lawful to drive over a mini roundabout and in some circumstances necessary but by doing so, you are moving out of your lane and if that is the case you do not have priority. So I think the cammer was at fault. At 4:05. Yes the red car was at fault but there are two issues with the cammer relating to Rule 112 of the Highway Code. This is because, when the cammer sounded the horn, their vehicle was stationary and the red car was directly in front of them and facing at right angles to them. That means they no longer presented a danger to the cammer and rule 112 says "You MUST NOT use your horn while stationary on the road except when another road user poses a danger". That in turn means the horn was not being used defensively and therefore its use was aggressive.

Clip 3: Although the viewer really did make it happen, but to be honest, the land rover driver baited him a bit by slowing down indicating that he was going to give way, but eventually didn't. Clip 11: I would not drive in the middle lane at all if I see an exit queue. I'd immediately switch to the right most lane; as far away as possible. Same for busy entry lanes. I'd always switch lanes if possible rather than to be in a position where there is a higher probability of something "unexpected" happening.

In the first clip, I think the caravan obscured the cammers view of the closed lane on the roundabout exit as they entered and went round, he stayed in a staggered position to the caravan but then sped up for the exit and/or the caravanner was slowing to merge, however they were still going round which could have caused the caravanner not to see the cammer, therefore thinking it was clear to merge, I would almost say it was bad timing but it would have probably been fine if they had stayed in a staggered formation to each other

4:10 I wouldnt say I blame the cammer but he has some input on this incident. By stopping at the crossing instead of following through with the emerging space, it gives pedestrians the idea you are giving them way which often leads to incidences like this. It often happens at junctions when a want to be good Samaritan for some reason stops in flowing traffic to give way, leading to a call pulling out and getting hit from somebody coming the opposite direction.
