We drove our turbo cars from Florida to Alaska. We took our STI drivetrain swapped Subaru Forester and Mitsubishi Evo 9 MR on a journey of over 10,000 miles. This isn't click bait, we actually did it! Or rather, you'll have to watch to find out if we actually made it all the way!

The brake pads, rotors and drive belts should be replaced before the trip, I have never seen anyone bring those parts with them on a long road trip. They are maintenance items not emergency items to bring on a road trip. Instead, I would put a roof rack on both cars, mount a couple spare wheels on them and take a few Jerry cans full of premium fuel, some essential tools and some first aids kits will be useful as well.

A Dutch couple named Dirk Jan Roeleven and Hester van der Vliet drove their 17 years old Subaru Forester with over 500.000 km on it (!) from the Netherlands back to the Subaru factory in Yajima, near Tokyo. During their 17 weeks, 24.000 km long journey they crossed Europe, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, South Korea and Japan. The old car made the journey without problems. Two light bulbs had to be replaced. And the wipers after they had been stolen. In Kazakhstan the shock absorbers were replaced as a precaution because in Mongolia there are hardly any paved roads. In Japan they were welcomed as heroes.

Brake upgrades great for track...not all that useful in real life except going down huge mountains... If you can lock up your wheels (or trigger anti-lock) at a given speed, you don't need a brake upgrade. If you want to stop faster with wheels that aren't turning, you need better grip...aka tires (or less mass).

derpdude dat boi I learnt on a 96 Celica a 2.2L one too was fast and had a 5 speed great acceleration handled the corners like a boss, felt planted and the gear changing was satisfying. my older sister and younger sister also learnt on it. My mother still owns it and it’s gone to hell and back so many times. It’s sitting on a cool 370k kms on the clock. Hardly looked after I’ve jumped it raced it almost flipped it multiple times. Celicas are fucking awesome cars. I own a 92 hilux with over 430k on the clock too and it’s still has plenty life in it.

I did this solo on a whim from Allentown, PA to Mnt Mickinly via Fairbanks in 1989 with my 79 Mustang hatchback 302, 4sp that had over 250k miles on it. No support. Only carried extra wipers and essential tools. Took 5 days to reach Tok, AK (lost a day to the trans failing in BC). The entire Alcan hwy was dirt back then. Returned via Hanes, AK ferry to Prince Rupert Canada then drove straight through to the Bay area. Two days later drove 41 hours straight back to PA. Lots of exploring along the way in Alaska and the Yukon. All done in 3.5 weeks. Lost all 4 headlights and one wiper one night as a semi coming from the opposite direction peppered me with rocks in the Yukon. Got replacements in Tok, AK. It was an amazing trip. Wish there were cameras like today's back then. Hid under an overpass on I-80 in NE as a tornado roared over just after 8"s of hail had fallen. My first rest was Cheyenne, WY. Had to get a new trans in Dawson Creek, BC. Ford dealer had one in stock and had me back on the road the next day for $500. Limped over 150 miles and an mnt pass stuck in 3 gear to get to Dawson Creek. That car got lots of stares along the way. No flat tires and never ran out of gas. Often gas stations were spaced nearly at my cars range limit. Picked up one hitchhiker in the Yukon. The worse thing about the trip was the horrible 55 mph speed limit in those days. With all the roads being paved these days and way more populated areas, there's no need for all those extra parts. Start the trip with new brakes and a belt. If needed pick up the extra parts cheaper in Canada with the exchange rate. Camped and car camped the entire trip except for the last night in San Jose, CA. I really wanted to drive up to the arctic circle from Fairbanks but, the locals talked me out of it due to the permafrost and marsh-like conditions back then saying the Stang would get stuck quite easily. A/C? I rolled my windows down :-) Yes, rolled. No power windows or door locks. A cool sunroof was nice. I chuckle when they say the middle of nowhere in TX when your on an interstate Hwy and you have mobile phones and back up. Still, good to see others doing road trips like this. Trips like these are so much fun. Next time take an old Ford so not so many stops for repairs :-) Total mileage was 18k+ miles.

I know a guy who does that trip every summer with his wife in a pickup pulling a 15000lb 5th wheel. PA to AK around July/Aug. It's a different trip now with paved roads, rest stops, and pretty heavy traffic during the summer season. It's no longer the crazy trip it was when you did it but it's still an adventure.

Thanks... I wish I could remember everything from that trip. I drove that Mustang to all 49 continental states and all of Canada. Multiple cross-country trips. 278k miles worth. Just do a trip like it. Don't wait until you're too old to take full advantage of where you go. All you really need is a vehicle you're both comfortable and familair with. It doesn't have to be new.

Do you still own yours? I never see any old ones driving around. Probably all rusted away. The factory turbo flow exhaust had a nice rumble to it on those V8's.

Immortal They are reliable if you properly maintain them just like any vehicle. Rotary engines are even reliable if you properly maintain them. I put 130k on an FC RX7 and never experienced a single problem that I couldn't avoid. Its all about taking care of the vehicle and not taking that it drives for granted.

Serpentine belt service interval is 60-100K, brakes 20-60K depending on driving conditions. Since you're mostly doing highway miles, I doubt you'll wear out much of your brake pads. You're just doing a promo for advanced auto parts. Many of these things can be purchased anywhere. The only thing I'd make sure to have is AAA, a large tool kit, a spare tire, a tire repair kit, an air pump, fluids, and lots of alcohol. And also a reminder to myself, don't buy a Subaru or a Mitsubitshi and buy a Prius.

My thoughts exactly, for the most part the only stuff that goes wrong is crap you can’t just fix on the side of the road, I drove the coquihalla highway in BC, and my timing belt snapped on my 04 forester (and subsequently destroyed the engine), but nothing else went wrong

My buddy and I did a 3K road trip around the Pacific Northwest across 5-6 states on his crappy late 80's or early 90's Mitsubishi Montero. We just had to fill a quart of oil at every fill up. LOL.

I forgot to mention that he called me the night before and we left the next morning. I had to do all the last minute planning and we couldn't reserve tent sites because it was all booked up (Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Zion, Yellow Stone). Worst of all, we had to take a 6 hr detour to Yosemite because the west entrance was closed. It couldn't go over 80 MPH on an 80 MPH highway at WOT. I offered to take my Mini Cooper S but he wanted to take his POS gas guzzler while I get 34mpg on the highway with a 21 cu.ft. Yakima roof cargo carrier and his gets....10-13.

Lol, not a single subaru is reliable. I work for Subaru and every one knows how shitty their engines are. Mitsubishi is just pure badass and reliable as hell! I have owned both and will take Mitsubishi every day of the week. Also warramties are good and all but if a car is going back in within 1000 miles for a new motor than something is severely wrong with it cough cough SUBARU!

So glad I came across this video. I've taken my 2009 Corolla S on many long road trips from Washington state to Key West, Florida one year which was a 8600-mile round trip. The next year I drove from Vancouver, WA to Nova Scotia, Canada on an epic 9400 mile round trip. I've watched Top Gear episodes where they drive clapped out old cares across the worst conditions known to man and they have less breakdowns! All that parts shopping for belts, brake pads etc. Just change them before you go. Give the car a proper once over and all should have been fine. Spare tyres, oil and coolant should have been all you'd need for a road trip! I wonder who sponsored this!

Around winter1994, drove from Calgary to Florida in a 93 Cavalier Z24 with a manual transmission... Drove through all kinds of conditions....from extreme cold and snow to torrential rainstorms... My friend at the time who I accompanied made a rule stating we would pay for our own fines, speeding tickets etc... She got four tickets, I got none...and I was just as flagrant at driving over the posted speed limits....I got lucky and she was pissed but rules are rules... No vehicle issues...

Also, the a/c issue is common on SG Foresters. Just fixed mine 1 month ago. Only costs $4 and 40min of time. There are removable shims inside the clutch assembly. Removing them brings clutch closer, allows engagement after years of wear. Check subaruforester.org for detailed instructions. Good luck! 👍👍👍👍

Great video's guys. Came here from the Rx-7 Video and also watched the Racer v Tesla video. Good content. I will say I drove, in a 2004 Jeep Cherokee with over 140,000 miles from Colorado to Montana, down South to AZ (going through Idaho and Utah) and I then went west to California. To return, I went back through AZ, up into Nevada, and back through Utah to get back to Denver. It was a fun trip, but the Jeep definitely had it's issues. You push a car for that hard and that long, you've got to be prepared to work on it, and I'm glad you show this. It was ultimately a year after this trip that the Jeep died. Long winters and road salt rusted the frame, brakes, and even axle to no return. Fun vehicle while I had it though.

Chevy 2004 Cavlier 347 K miles. one fuel pump one alternator ignition module 4 spark plugs.2 sets of brake pads. You guys break a lot stuff in less than one month.

This is the first time i see someone do this. I did a similar thing a while ago. I drove my Cl63 AMG from Germany Hamburg to Bengaluru India. Which is almost the same distance, if not more. I replaced my brakes, got myself new tires, got a complete fluid replacement(engine oil, servo fluid, transmission fluid, all kinds of coolants,) and new sparkplugs. Well in all the 7900 kilometers, i had to get new tires in iran after i had two flats. And i had to get a rim replaced after it broke hitting a pothole. Well it was no good idea and i had to ship my car back to Germany from India.

April 2018, my dad and I took my 97 Tacoma from 2.5 hours south of Anchorage where I'm from, to Richmond, Va.. took us 4 days, driving 24 hours that really sucked lol.. I'm sure we passed each other! Looking forward to watching this series!!

I actually did this drive twice from 2 different locations. I was a soldier in August 1987 and was assigned to Ft Wainwright Alaska I bought a $465.00 79 Mustang in Wrights town, NJ right outside Ft Dix, NJ. I put on new tires, changed the oil and replace a muffler. So for under $800 I went from Ft Dix, NJ down to visit my family in New Orleans and Texas and then it took me 7 days to get to Alaska going through Canada and the Yukon territory. The very next time I did this drive is when a friend of mine in Alaska asked me to bring them their car from Ocala, FL. So when I went on leave in 1988, I flew into Orlando, FL and was picked up by his parents who had made sure that the car was road worthy. It was a 1984 Toyota Corolla 2 dour coup. I drove it on vacation and then did the same trip again up to Alaska. neither vehicle had 4 will drive the mustang was rear wheel and the Toyota front wheel. So I am not impressed that these modern cars can make this same journey with Camera and most likely credit cards, GPS and cell phones. I had none of that. I used a Randy McNally map book and cash.

I took my mother's Mercury Tracer from Rhoade Island to Florida and back and these morons are just ignorant with how many issues they have. I've done that trip over eight times and the worst that happened was a flat from some idiots who had a box of screws fall off their work truck.

@@SilvaDreams it was definitely over kill by loading up on brake pads, all 4 rotors & belts, ck over your vehicle completely, replace anything that might be almost worn out(brakes, etc), change all fluids & then your normally good to go. Take some tools just in case, as well as plenty of fluids, especially oil, water, antifreeze. Ck your spare tire over, get a can or two of fix a flat as a backup......then drive. I think these guys did a segment for advance to get free parts, even thou they weren't needed for the trip. Who really takes rotors & brake pads on a road trip, lol.

I drove my Evo IX from Texas back to North Carolina straight and did it completely starting at around 6 in the afternoon to the next afternoon. No issues at all. A nicely built evo is a very reliable car. Mine has 150k on it.
