Gary is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States, 25 miles (40 km) from downtown Chicago, Illinois. Gary is adjacent to the Indiana Dunes National Park and borders southern Lake Michigan. Gary was named after lawyer Elbert Henry Gary, the founding chairman of the United States Steel Corporation. After the white flight, it held the highest percentage of African Americans. The city is known for its large steel mills and as the birthplace of the Jackson family.
The population of Gary was 74,789, as of the 2019 Census estimate, making it the ninth-largest city in the state of Indiana. Once a prosperous steel town, it has suffered drastic population loss due to overseas competition and restructuring of the industry, falling by 55 percent from its peak of 178,320 in 1960. As with many Rust Belt cities, it suffers from unemployment, decaying infrastructure, and low literacy and educational attainment levels. It is estimated that nearly one-third of all houses in the city are unoccupied or abandoned.

I came from Gary and the area you drove around is the 46407 you started from Harrison BLVD. You missed that beautiful church on 15th and Harrison(0:29 mark to the right). If you say Gary is the worst then you should drive around 46403 (Miller) and Ross and some of 46409 and 46408 You cant based base this one video on one zipcode cause the 46407 is bad but it ain't the south side of Chicago. Yes there is alot of abandoned buildings but some areas are still maintained.

I have recently retired but spent my last 10 working years in and around Gary working for a home health agency. I know it well. There are literally blocks where almost every home is abandoned or boarded up. Every now and then you'll find a little area that is actually very nice and well kept but these are very few and far between. There are homes in the Miller beach area that right on the Lake Michigan and are nice and also pricey but this is not typical Gary. You can still see some architectural leftovers from Gary's heyday and its sad to see the decay and waste. In general, its depressing place to be and when working there I generally tried to spent as little time there as possible. Gary is bad but I'm not sure its the worst in America. There are areas in Chicago that are truly scary. I think the same could be said for Baltimore, New York, St. Louis, Oakland, etc.

Gary, IN has been the worst city in Indiana for the past 20+ years. The population is around 50k - 70k with 50-150 homicides per year. Such a small city shouldn't have half that many homicides.
