I can't believe cdot makes hazmat trucks take this route during the winter. Drove this all the time in a fuel tanker
@myroadtours614710 ай бұрын
I guess its due to maintaining the road during the winter? But they will close it if it gets real bad. Once that happens, they can use the tunnels but they only let hazmat trucks through by themselves. This slows things ways down.

Drove it before Eisenhower Tunnel was even started to ski at Vail in 1966. Those were the days when it was all just really beginning in Colorado. OMG it was so much fun.

I’ll be visiting Breck next week and had planned to take this scenic drive. Thanks for this preview!

Next should be nice, I haven't paid much attention but we should be starting our fall color season. Vail should be nice, Crested Butte, Aspen to name a few others.

I made this drive going east a couple weeks ago, most breathtaking drive I've ever been on! Really lets you take in the Continental Divide. I wouldn't want to drive it in winter though.

So my hotel is in keystone. I drove to there from Colorado springs so I didn't actually drive on the treacherous side of the pass until a couple days later. I had no idea what Loveland pass was and had driven through trail ridge road just earlier in the day. I wasn't as scared driving through this because I had no idea we were actually almost 12000 ft up. The whole time I was just trying to get home from a long day driving, getting annoyed at the smaller mountains blocking my view of Grays Peak that I didn't realize I was on a road almost as high as the one I drove over 2 hours to see! And it was only 20 minutes away

My question is why is there no guard rail on the ascent/descent portion? Those are some wicked dropoffs with barely a foot to spare.
@myroadtours61473 жыл бұрын
Good question. Its not uncommon to see areas of highways like this here in Colorado. One of the main reasons CDOT doesn't install guard rails in some of these areas is that they cause issues with plowing the road.

I have to drive a 43,000lb hazmat load through here. The hairpin turns got me thinking I-80.

I used to drive Hazmat and not sure I would want to drive this route. Now with that said, I see fuel tankers on it all the time.

I transported a load of hazmat across this highway back in '99 when I drove for KLLM. But then again I was only hauling seven 55 gallon drums with a total weight of 3500 lbs.

Used to to it every day with a tanker full of gas. 80k lbs every time. Winter was rough

I hate this detour... I had a hazmat load and had to take it few times... From a big rig you can easily see down the side of the mountain.

I used to haul fuel and couldn't imagine taking this route!

What time of year was this taken? I'm tempted to go in October vs September, but have no idea how early these areas get snow. I just know it can be earlier because of the elevation.

I've slept since I filmed and posted this video. I want to say it was shot during the summer months. If You're looking for Fall colors, they start changing around mid September and last around October 7-10th. Now Fall colors change is nearly divided into regions, they seem to start up north near this area and will end around Durango in October. They also seem to change last in the front range, so generally, when you see Fall colors in say Denver, you may have missed them in the Mountains. Also, its not uncommon to see Snow in late October but it can sometimes snow around mid October, so keep an eye on the weather just in case.

Those golden aspens are your clue. They start to change in the middle of September.

The speed limits seem awfully low as compared to a like road in Texas.
@myroadtours61472 жыл бұрын
As a fellow Texan I can understand how this would seem low, especially coming from West Texas where we had 75-85 mph limits. This video makes the drive seems easier to manage at higher speeds than it really is in person. The posted limit in my opinion is actually idea for this particular road. Now I haven't mentioned my issues with some of the posted speed limits in Colorado but there are plenty of areas such as the Eastern Plains where the speed limit is 65 mph that could easily handle 75 mph...sorta how the speed limit increases on the outskirts of Texas towns.

The main area is Keystone Resort with various housing and people living near by it. This is just outside of Dillon Colorado. The Dillon and Frisco is a very beautiful area indeed!
