I retired from Truck Driving 3 years ago after 25 years OTR. I made a bunch of Trips in and out of Denver. The most memorable was a hail storm. Golf ball size hail was several inches deep on the roads. All the cars pulled over and several were hiding under overpasses. I drove into town and delivered to a Sams Club. My Truck cab survived fine but the noise was very loud when hail was hammering it.

We see this all the time back east here where I am now, heavy snow covered free ways, truck rolling right along and the traffic slows down and the trucks can't stop on the slippery road and plows right into the cars, 50 or 60 vehicle pileup, dozens hurt or killed . Up here on I-90 now when the weather gets like that, the freeway is closed to trucks.

My dad told me a story about driving in snow like this. Back in 1984 he went to Lake Tahoe and it was snowing so heavily that his windshield was full of ice and snow so he couldn’t see anything at all while he was still driving on the freeway. Luckily a cop saw him and decided to guide him to the nearest exit off the freeway. Must be scary driving in these conditions especially when you can’t see in front of you.

I am living in the Philippines now where trucking is quite a bit different. I have been over those mountains with chains many times and do not miss it one bit. People tend to "share the road" here and make 3-4 lanes out of 2 lanes. Very little road rage as Filipinos are pretty tolerant also.

I live in NJ. I just had to put chains on i70 for the first time yesterday. I didn't realize my chains were 2 chains welded together so they go over both drive tires. What a pain in the ass to do while it's snowing and freezing.

I'm a truck driver from europe. I was in the US. I have to say you truckers are mostly true professionals compared to europe where we have a lot of drivers that never should sit behind a steering wheel and it's all becouse of the lack of drivers. But the rest of the people driving on your roads are just a joke. They drive like they do it for the first time taking all the lanes, cutting off others..

When it snows like that, there are no lanes, that does not mean you get to use the entire road.... That suv should have pulled over and called it quits if they were that scared. Chains are reqiured and not a bad idea for going down hill in the northwest and California, because you need to resist gravity and bare tires often do not have the traction to hold back the rig for very long. It is often much warmer over here and that makes it much more slick. There have been many times I made it up a hill in snow just fine without chains, but going down was like riding a sled and wish i had put chains on. Even starting out going down at 10 or 15mph is too much to hold back all that weight. And with the curves a lot of the roads have you do not want to pick up much speed going down or you will be sliding off into the ditch or off the cliff.

Americans in warmer states are funny when it snows. This would be a regular winter day in Latvia. People tend to drive slower, choose longer breaking distances, but still drive decent, not blocking lanes and not using emergancy lights without any reason.

Great driving job. I run the Northwest and drive Volvo’s with I-Shift transmissions, Volvo vectro motor and add in traction control that combination is unstoppable. The only time we need chains going downhill is if chains are required. I’ve had to chain up when the sign is on but I know the Volvo didn’t need them , but that’s the law. Plus now thanks to California we have to put single rail chains on all 4 drivers, that sucks. The Volvo with the I-Shift is the best machine I’ve ever driven in the snow and ice.
