I picked up my E46 M3 new in Munich back in 2002, through the BMW European Delivery program. While I did the trip for the experience and the vacation, it really did give me a lot of insight about how the car was designed and set up just by touring with it on German roads. We toured three countries and did a few decent stretches between destinations. This car could eat long stretches of autobahn, and curvy fast sections of the Alpenstrasse, and cobblestone streets in old Salzburg - all with plenty of room, and in comfort. A lot of its goodness was lost (or goes untapped) when the car returned to the USA a few weeks later. The car is designed to get You from point A to point B faster than we can appreciate here. The car was oddly clunky to drive when I first owned it - and that might help explain some of your initial disdain for your “hero.” I’m not sure I even understand what it is about this car that makes it feel that way, but for whatever reason, it improves over time. My M3 has a little over 100k miles and it runs better now than it did with 20k miles. It even sounds better. And it’s decidedly less clunky. My advice - stick with it. It’s the last great BMW as far as I’m concerned (I never liked the E92). I’m looking forward to seeing how your mods work out, too.

E46 M3 needs to grabbed by the scruff of the neck around some Twisties. If you cannot drive it at 8/10 and get those tyres scrubbing for grip then you are missing out on what is so special about that chassis. The e92 on the other hand you can experience what's special about it at 6 or 7/10 because of it's motor and sense that it's a special modern euro muscle car. Also the straight six metallic rasp of the e46 is what makes it so unique and special, trying to dial that out is simply stupid in my experience. Get euro MDM coded in and drive the thing as hard as you can around bends to 'experience it' while having confidence in the MDM safety net. But there is so much grip in the chassis you can get away with traction completly off, just don't lift off throttle on a closing radius bend.

But yes you should sell it back to EAG, you clearly don't get what this car represents especially if you want to mess around with the exhaust.

Ok, I will answer your ridiculous assumption and question as you insist. Yes you are so wrong. Who are you to make an assumption like that? I own one of the nicest mint 13' e92 m3 comps in my country, similar mods to you and I'm considering the 718 Spyder and live on a 25 acre property. I'm also very fastidious but have learnt to deal with it in a way that no longer creates stress. Now, Did i shit on you in my comment? Was it a trolling comment? No. I I'm simply someone who is an enthusiast like you and in many ways very similar to you Matt. I think what you have created (OG) is simply amazing and you give many like me inspiration to go down the same road. I would also at some point be looking to be a customer of yours when i build my dream garage but now rethinking that. Perhaps take a couple deep breaths and have a read over this thread. You have created a video where you have expressed how much you dislike the car and you have comments enabled on the video and I simply shared my experience as i too wanted to sell my m3 at times when it was being used sedatly on normal driving conditions. As I said it truly does shine when you lean on that chassis around some twisty bends, if you are able to tap into that then you will 'get it' and perhaps will spark a deeper love and emotion for the sweet car that it is. Now getting back to what we should be able to discuss Matt, I have a question for you that I value your input. If you had to have the one drivers car till the end of time between your e92 m3 and GT4 what would it be?

I'm happy to enjoy the old school thrill of driving my M3 on winding country roads and simply enjoying the handling, the balance, the swinging back end in the curvy sections and the all round aural experience. USA seems to be short on those types of roads which is why these cars get extreme mods just so they can compete with muscle cars on the free way. OK so I’ve not completely finished watching this video till just now. I’d forgotten how Matt was so negative about a few things with the car… Let me just say that in 2002, when I got my convertible SMG car new(coincidentally it was 65k$), the damn thing was a SCREAMER and the engine was glorious to hear. The exhaust had very many mixed reviews from new owners. But even back then I was saying that people needed to check their egos at the door and just listen from the drivers seat. Incidentally the exhaust is marvelous with the top down. And I might add..Once a guy’s had a GT3-Yeah I’m not sure this is the car for you. Why pour all that $ into a car that is just (only barely) fast, now in 2022? There are plenty of others out there. But I also understand the whole point of Obsesses Garage. I personally am into originality and preservation. My M3 is the most plentiful, valueless, boring and basic BMW I have, at this point. But it takes me back 20 years now and those years were awesome. The car was awesome. It was indeed very happy revving. At 7k you’re not even “there” yet..I haven’t touched anything but the exhaust (I got an Eisenman. TI and love it) after all of these years. I’ve got no CSL tune and I still get a kick out of the shifting at the track or mountain road. The rev matching, the various settings, the security from money shifts, the lever and paddles..All of it. I’ll be honest-i wish Matt had more twisty and hilly roads. That would make these videos seem more fun and he’d enjoy the cars stock a heck of a lot more.

The audio system can be tough on e46s if you want the system to look factory. If you have a non nav car you can send the head unit to carphonics in the UK and have them mod the business CD with pre amp outputs so you can then send that signal to a DSP system and then an amp and then use something like a technics harness to connect that amp to all 10 speakers. Outside of that you have to deal with aftermarket head units and the few that do fit in the oem location well can be a little iffy. Even the nice ones. I have a Dynavin N7 and it is made for the e46 so it looks great. The only problem is the interface can be a little slow and the head unit doesn’t seem to be too reliable. I’ve been chasing great but affordable sound on my E46 for a while now and I’m close but still not quite there

I think only driving in sport mode might make the car a bit less enjoyable. The way it's mapped from factory 30% pedal travel = 50% throttle. Having such an aggressive non-linear throttle mapping can leave a lot to be desired up top. 65% of pedal travel = 88% throttle, which makes the last 35% of the pedal feel like no one is home. Doesn't really make sense on a car that belongs in the high rev range. I suggest taking a look at a little program called ECUWorx, where you can customize your throttle mapping. I changed mine so normal mode is just 100% linear and I think it's really improved the driving feel and predictability. Recommend taking a look into it if you get the time, there's some nice write ups on nam3forum on how to do it.

You know Matt doesn’t care about a car when he hits a bird at 80 mph and doesn’t bat an eye to it😂

These car you got to replace the headers. I have Status Gruppe headers and the full exhaust X-pipe and scza backbox. If I had a LHD I'd have the ap racing or American racing headers . That's the secret sauce. It will never sound like the V8 but can sound damn good. Ohlins R&T are fantastic suspensions on this platform, the set on mine is hands down the best setup I've had it being a fast road cars. Turner motorsport anti roll bar, purple tag rack, solid coupler, the car will be completely transformed with the right alignment. It's a great platform, the CS and of course CSL are quite a bit better out the box. It can easily be sorted Sound check here : kzbin.infoe1dcOms8FpU?feature=share

I don't know why everyone says this car sounds bad? With catless headers it's one of the best sounding cars around

the e46 is like a ae86 to japan. nice platform for racing. definitely not a luxury sport type vehicle. e46 shines on the race track for what bmw manufactured from factory is why it has the reputation it has. street driving does not do the e46 justice. it was meant to be on the race track to show the true potential of what bmw built. hard to explain without driving the e46 to the very highest edge.

Everyone I know that has went e46 -> e92 always comes to the same conclusion. E46s just aren’t that good. It feels like the Honda Civic of m3s which is kinda of disrespectful bcuz the new civic si is actually a great car to drive (minus the wind noise lol). These e46s just don’t drive great, they’re slow, and need way too much work to make it fun to drive. Idk about you, but I don’t want to be at 7k Rpms everyday every minute to enjoy driving my car. I would say for most people it’s nostalgia, not the fact that it’s a good car. In 01 I’m sure this car was years ahead of its competition I mean Benz had a naturally aspirated c55 or c32 idk, and Audis rs4 was just flat out junk. But in todays standards with the aftermarket we have, there is just so many better cars. I’d rather get an e36 m3 and modify it to 2022 standards or just build my e92.

Your gonna have to drive this one harder / on a track to feel it properly , it doesn’t have a big v8 to make ya feel special , it’s more about the handling feel and chassis feel , engine sits weight going towards mid of car . Your gonna need the carbon airbox inspired from the csl version for your e92 though this e46 isn’t your type of car it’s too slow for those big roads and your driving style and the power your used to. it’s ok not to like it just don’t bash it too much it did have a following on the Nurburgring for a reason llol

Had one in my late 20’s (41 now) and I unfortunately felt the exact same way about this car. Tried different exhausts, intakes, wheels, suspension and the car never really lived up to what I thought it should. The day I sold it was the best day I owned it….

Truth is, neither the manual (that everyone raves about) nor the Smg are actually that good. Especially not compared to a Honda box etc. I love my Smg but not my daily.

One day a sound engineer will fix the rasp of these motors making a sound tuned exhaust manifold or at least show a company what to do to cancel out that noise. Till then my exhaust is staying stock

I have never ever heard an E46 M3 with a nice sounding aftermarket exhaust, never. They all sound too raspy and tinny. At least we'll get several exhaust videos from you

What helped me the most when learning how to heel toe was slowing down. You don't have to do the entire motion at the same time if that makes sense. You're on the street, not a race track. Practice the footwork with the clutch depressed and worry about the shifting after. Practicing without shoes helps a ton too.

Idk why people say this car is slow 😂 I’ve dusted modern cars with it bone stock, buddy’s q60s sport, sti’s, mustangs. And now it’s in shop for vanos, catless headers + tune and it should even pull stronger. Btw this is the best sounding one I have found online kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJu1qaejnptkl6s
