Does anybody remember the Rialto movie theatre in The Strand? Or spending time on the jetty? Milkshakes at Friedman & Cohen? Shopping at The Co-Op where you could buy anything from a sewing machine to a fishing rod? It's all gone now, so sad. In the 1970s, the SABC TV program Net 'n Bietjie Liefde was filmed in The Strand.

That’s quite interesting, all this is new information to me. Thanks a lot for sharing.

@@travelthroughthelens369 - The Rialto Movie Theater was situated at what is now known as 97 On Strand and was a large theater that also had upstairs balcony seating. Times were so laid-back in those days, that during interval, most of the patrons went over the road (Church Street) to the ice-cream shop where PostNet is currently located. The refreshments were just so much better there and the movie theater owners never minded. Friedman & Cohen has burned down at least twice, possibly three times, over the ages. If you go upstairs to their accounts department, you will see photos of the building burning down. The Strand Railway Station was the 'end of the line' and used to have a railway triangle for turning the steam engines around. That land is all developed now.

What an amazing country! I just can't for the life of me understand why there's so many white cars in South Africa! It's like a pandemic of whiteness! Like people are going to the dealership, drooling, "it must be white, please!!!" Why! 😅
@abubakarbarrie2087 Жыл бұрын
The reason why is to reflect sunlight and make the car less hot. Helping reduce the use of AC and save on gas. The prices of gas are exponentially higher than other regions in southern Africa

@abubakarbarrie2087 Oh, ok. It just looks so odd to me. We have scorching heat in America, too. Miami, Houston, Dallas, Arizona, Las Vegas, and even Los Angeles can get seriously hot. But I've never seen this many white cars in one place. Makes sense though.
