Driving On WA SR-162 East In 1982 (Sumner)

Back in 1982, The Washington State Department of Transportation drove East on SR-162 and recorded video to document the highway. This was part of a project that photographed/videotaped the states highways every couple of years. This video now resides at The Washington State Archives who were kind enough to share it.

Now it’s a congested mess, in the mid 90s I used to drive from Des Moines to Puyallups Thun Field airport in 30 minutes taking SR 161/ Meridian… it would take an hour and a half now

Probably more than that during weekday rush hour. It gets backed up from the 410 all the way to Orting.

I really detest how congested this state has become. It's to the point where it's becoming unlivable. Really sad.

I can’t imagine driving into Orting and only passing a handful of cars. I was in disbelief that the driver could actually pass another vehicle on that road. I miss those days

Yeah i noticed SR 162 in the Google Maps of the 2020s as a congested road thats still 2 lanes with lots of stoplights. Virtually no stoplights south of Puyallup in 1982 it was pretty much open country back then. Plus the railroads are mostly gone

Willing to bet all that green beautiful land has been replaced with apartments and overpriced cookie cutter houses. The huge influx of out of state people moving up here at an alarming rate has ruined a lot.

Shockingly a lot of stuff on this route hasn’t changed that much minus Orting which has thousands of new homes and businesses since then. The stretch from 410 through Alderton until Orting and after Orting through South Prairie are still a lot similar than expected. I agree though it’s not the same nor ever will be again here due to all these new people. I grew up in Bonney Lake and remember when there was almost nothing. So much better.
