The Mackinac Bridge, known to locals as the "Mighty Mac" is the 5th longest suspension bridge in the world! It connects Michigan's lower peninsula and upper peninsula across the Straits of Mackinac and is 5 miles long.
The views are breathtaking in the summer but in the winter, it can get a bit dicey with the ice, snow, and wind. There is a toll on the north side of the bridge as well as more information listed here: www.mackinacbr...

Man I've crossed that bridge more times than I can count. If you couldn't tell in the video the 2 center lanes are nothing but grated steel to cut down the wieght of the bridge deck and allow high winds to pass through instead of catching wind like a sail. Its so trippy crossing the bridge and being able to look through the deck and see the water below.

Definitely a marvel! Some people really dislike driving over the grates, but looking down at the waters below is nostalgic. Such a stunning experience every time!

Oh fun! Sounds like it will be a great trip! You'll be a Mackinac Bridge pro in no time at that rate. It is pretty impressive how minimal it is over the vast waters. If you make your way to the Island, the ferry companies have bridge tour ferries as well as the Sip N Sail cruises at night generally go under the bridge and talk about it a bit. Really cool to see it from a different angle! Cheers!

I drove over the Chesapeake Bridge numerous times in my late teens when I was stationed in DC, and spent weekends in Ocean City. Never had an issue. Did it again a few summers ago in my mid 30s, and I darn near had a panic attack. I never would have expected the response that occurred until it happened. I would love to do Mackinaw Bridge but I’m worried I’ll have a similar experience. This was a neat video to watch tho! I cautiously look forward to the drive over one day!

Hi, so I’m from Florida and have no idea about ice or snow. But wouldn’t the metal grating make trying to drive across it even more challenging? How does that work? Is it regularly salted?? 😮
@natureharmonytv
@natureharmonytv 4 ай бұрын
Hello! To be honest, I'm no so sure about salt. I would imagine they'd stay away from salt because it could cause it to rust, but use sand instead. I am really not sure though. I've crossed the bridge hundreds of times in every kind of weather and all seasons. If it's unsafe for any reason, they shut the bridge down or send out pace cars to reduce the speed of traffic. You could probably look up or contact the Mackinac Bridge Authority if you want more detailed information. Thanks for watching and have a great day!

@@obkeeno I've driven through West Virginia in those conditions. One of the most intense and focused drives I've ever done. I had no idea the that was going to be part of the route and was surprised and overwhelmed by the vastness of the mountains and the intensity of the drive. The snow factor is just....dangerous but I guess that comes with it! The Mackinac Bridge is only scary for folks who don't like water, heights, or bridges. They work it up in their heads as being scarier than the actual drive.

Driving over this bridge always terrified me. The side overlooking the lakes are not very, in my mind, safe. The inside lanes are a graded metal and to me felt like it was forcing me into the oncoming traffic. It's a awesome place but scary to me.
