I have crossed that bridge 5 days a week since about 2004, about 6,000 to 7, 000 times give or take. Only thing that bothers me is traffic, scared drivers and the accidents. Weather can be fun at times, driving over it in the dark during a thunderstorm is wild.

They used to have annual bay bridge walks on the first weekend of May. I walked it a few times. The bus would take us to the Eastern Shore on the Westbound span, as seen here. We would walk back on the Eastbound span that you see beside this one. Amazingly, it was not as scary walking it was driving it. The Eastbound span is not as scary as the Westbound span. I think it has to do with the railings. On the Eastbound span, it had those tougher barriers and you could not see the water below. Whenever I drove on the Westbound span, I would always stay in the middle lane, as this driver did. One false move, you are through the rail and into the water below! They need higher and more sturdy rails on the Westbound span! I don't think I would have been able to walk across the Westbound span.

Ah-the upper, shorter Chesapeake Bridge whoe name always get sme confused with its more than four times longer tunnel/bridge combo by Virginia. Glad to see that someone elese gave it a different name, the Maryland bay bridgemwhcih I will use in conversation and here and elsewhere online to differentiate from the bay bridge tunnel.:)

I'm not familiar with this bridge. I noticed another bridge on the left. Do they start and end at the same location, or close to it? If so, why isn't one bridge going one way and the other bridge going the other way. That way, traffic on each bridge, all go the same way?
@railfanaiden90945 жыл бұрын
Yes that is the second part of the bay bridge it starts and ends in the samenplance and it is exactly like the bridge in the video but the cars are traveling the opposite way 1 lane heading the same direction as the video and two lanes going the other way. I believe that have one lane going the other way to keep drivers from getting distracted by looking around. Not totally sure
@hvacguy844 жыл бұрын
@@railfanaiden9094 The reason Two-way traffic is used is to reduce traffic congestion the eastbound side. The eastbound bridge only has two lanes while the westbound bridge has 3 lanes. During heavy eastbound traffic congestion the left lane on the westbound bridge is converted to an eastbound lane.
@railfanaiden90944 жыл бұрын
@@hvacguy84 oh ok yeah we had to drive on the other bridge going the same direction as the video. Not able to see as much because we had to focus on not hitting oncoming cars

One is Eastbound and the other Westbound. Because the Eastern Shore is more rural and less populated, the Eastbound span only has two lanes. The Westbound has three because it's going towards major cities like Annapolis, Baltimore and DC... Sometimes they have to redirect a lane on the bridge due to a high volume of traffic. Factors may include; rush hour traffic, Summer vacation, special events like bay bridge walks, etc.. OK, now I am telling my age, (Thank God I lived this long) I remember as a child, there was only one bridge. That was the now Eastbound span that only had two lanes! Can you imagine a bridge that long with only two lanes with traffic meeting each other? We used to go to Sandy Point Beach, and you had a good view of the bridge from there. Of course it was so long that it faded as it reached the Eastern Shore. As soon as I could see a truck crossing it, I would just keep my eyes on it to see how long it would take to get to the end on this side. I could not watch long enough to the end. 😆

Has there been any plans to make this bridge any safer?
@xJohnny_Ax6 жыл бұрын
No, this for summer traffic traveling eastbound to Ocean City, it eases traffic congestion. Although Gov. Hogan has proposed a plan to build another bay bridge in Southern Maryland to ease traffic on route 50, that includes the bay bridge.

In the USA, 🇺🇸 drivers are allowed to make a right turn on red unless otherwise noted. I think it also depends on the state. I live in Maryland, but was visiting my cousin in Brooklyn, NY. At 2 AM, my friend made a right turn on a quiet street after stopping at a red light. Then immediately! 🚨🚓👮 My friend did not understand why we were stopped. I said, "Oh! I guess they don't allow right turns on red here!" The Officer let us go without a ticket.
