@@bwofficial1776 Cost-cuts during the 90s are a pretty big myth. They were actually spending more than ever trying to keep up with the Japanese. It was really around 2002, a few years after the start of Daimler-Chrysler, where terrible decisions were made. Even more towards the end of the Daimler-Chrysler era. Many point to interior plastic failure and rust issues, etc., but both of those were due to costly experimentation with new methods (lightweight materials to catch up to Japanese plastics dominance, and better corrosion protection methods).

Its double firewall engine bay seemed very unique and intelligent. The only problem I had was that it had the air conditioner refrigerant was inferior when Mercedes tried something new. It The dealer and other shops couldn't get that A/C cold....but that was my only real complaint. There were no built in cupholders at the time, but an aftermarket window hung was a partial work around. It was a tremendously confident vehicle to cruise in. These were some of the last vehicles that Mercedes built that were formidable. The new ones are not the same. They are are not made to last...these were. Also of note, the sunroof. I could see myself driving a manual W124, either a sedan or coupe at 5AM on a sunny May morning in Alps or Tatra mtns. I started selling these in 1988 at a MB dealership. This one was about 46K. They kind of remained in that range for a number of years inspite of inflation and improvements. It automatically started in 2nd gear unless you floored it to drop it down to 1st. They sold very well and were considered bulletproof, had a really strong trade in value and in the 90's I took them in with 100+K and put them right on the pre-owned lot.In their day and even now, they are an amazingly, rock solid car. My mum used to have a 1994MY W124 E220, which was facelifted and had the 5-speed manual gearbox. Four pedals on the floor! W124 was brilliantly over-engineered and timelessly stylish. Only issue is the W124 is really good at hiding rust, that's what took out my mom's car. Body panels were fine, but the frame rotted. The antenna is known to get leaks through the rubber seal, which can eventually get as far as the frame leaving no evidence at the time. The trunk's thick rubber seal would leak too. The wiring looms were also a failure point, usually lasting about 8 years before a replacement needed to be fitted - the loom would cause intermittent engine cut-outs, a serious safety problem, so you'd have no choice in the matter. Even a used part from a scrapyard was very expensive.

My mom had a new 1992 300e when I was a tween and she still says it’s the best car she ever owned. I remember test driving it w her and I wanted her to get the new Lexus LS400 instead bc it seemed so much more advanced and modern in comparison. Both are great cars but she wanted something smaller and the Mercedes’ solidity. So many great memories in that car. And it was the car I learned to drive in. It left such an impression that I later got myself a 2008 e550. But it didn’t have the same solidity feeling as the old 300e.

@@emixmim Yes there was never any 24v 4 matic. Not from factory at least. They even kept the old 12v 300E for that setup when the newer 24v 320 and 280 engines came in -93. The 4 matic never got those engines either.

I had an 87 190E 2.3 and an 88 300 SE (same engine as the car in this video) … put 280,000 miles on the SE. I’ve been fortunate enough to have several MBZs since I sold that 88 SE in 2003, and none of them have been even close to those two 80s models in terms of overall quality and solidity. Every element, down to the minor light bulbs, was beautifully engineered. I know, because I kept the few parts I had to replace, and they were works of engineering art, every one of them. I will never forget those days when having a Benz meant you owned a great car.

A true timeless classic built to look elegant and be rock-solid for decades on end. Sadly, they don't make them like that any more!

We had a '91 model and it was just a thrill to drive. We gave it to my uncle to use it but sadly he sold it without notice and now I just miss that car. It is a brick, but it's also a tank on the road it's just so smooth riding but yet so stable!

I daily drove a 1990 model and can concur, these are fantastic machines. The interior is everything which you expect from Mercedes at their peak. They're still quite common here in Berlin (Charlottenburg) which is a testament to their longevity and upper-class status.

Mercedes felt stable on highways in 1969. I think many good Euro cars did. There are things I prefer about this car to modern cars and modern Benzs. I like the visibility but mostly I like that it is understated. It's simple in its presentation of elegance and doesn't need screens and ambient lighting. But the way it drives over the road is just how they drive, solid, stable, quiet, strong.

My parents had an 89 260E when I was in high school. It was a smooth road car that could accelerate onto the freeways.

My first Benz was a 1984 300D, built like a tank, drove it for 240,000 miles. Bought a 1987 300E and a 1988 300E from my wife and put over 200,000 on each of them and passed them down to 2 of my adult sons. I also bought a 1990 300CE coupe with the DOHC 24 valve engine, which adds almost 50 horsepower. Still have that amazing car in mint condition. The W124 is truly the last era of built to last Mercedes. I have since owned a 1998 E320 that I passed on to my son with 220,000 miles. I currently won a 2000 E430 (wife's car) and a 2001 E430 Sport, which is my car. The W210's are still a great model, but not quite the same quality as the W124. The coupe is now becoming collectible.

I had the same. 90 4matic. Factory heated seats! I figured out how to start of in 1st gear from a stop. Lol. Also I would shut that red handle 4matic valve off in the summer and drive in rear wheel only.

this car is special to me, a few years ago my dad used to daily a malachite green on cloth green series 2. That beautiful two tone finish i will never forget. That's why I'll have to disagree with you and say that the later models just look better. I mean if the color matched bumpers and sacco boards aren't already enough, think about how much better the car looks with the cleaner headlights. I can never get over how hideous the us spec series 1 lights with the indents look. Thanks for showcasing this stunning car and bringing me a bit of nostalgia!

I missed these cars. Rode in a few of them as a kid growing up when they where still fairly new. Even then, as a kid you can tell the quality of the car just by the ride, doors and switches.

I went to a private school and was in 10th grade in 1989. There were a few W124 300Es that I saw. They were THE Best. Best constructed. Engine as smooth as cream. Best ride. Cruise all day. Mercedes went all out and created the best.

1989 I was in 10th grade , my ride to school was a BMW e23 728i. I always remember 2 girls being dropped off in their Dad’s Merc E300 and being very jealous 😀. Our BMW seemed so old fashioned.

I love that Mercedes from era was using a SOHC inline-six when everyone else had gone to DOHC. It shows they prized reliability, quiet operation, and mechanical simplicity over power and fuel economy.

Mine lasted me 28 years-and no car I’ve ever driven in over 50 years ever had a ride as supreme as the 300E… she was replaced by a W211 E350, still really enjoyable at 19 years old.

Yeah the W210's are actually great, probably the most underrated E-Class generation. I've got a 1996 E280 and it feels so solid. The only problem with them is rust but where I live it's not an issue fortunately!

Growing up we had a ‘93 320. It may be peak MB which means it’s peak car. I have fond memories of when no other car was available and my mom let me use it to run an errand. I will say that these were everywhere in upper middle class NJ and I don’t remember anyone ever making much fuss about it.
