comparing this car to a modern car is like comparing the Wright brothers flying machine to modern jets. They are both important or critical steps in progress.
@kungfucow5477 жыл бұрын
1. Only *idiots* compare anything old with anything new. 2. The same idiots fail to understand that you have to learn to walk before you can run. Somebody made *those important first steps FIRST* . 3. Anything new always appears unpractical and pointless in its first iteration. The same applied to computers, mobile phones, locomotives, steam engines, you name it. The bottom line is we would even have any invention without any visionaries inventing something new nobody either had thought of before or nobody believed would have a future.

Wright brothers weren't the first. White (Weiss) was. Wright's lost a supreme Court case over it. White engines used oxy acetylene - do *not* try it with a modern engine. You will need a new face/arm/testicles. Also when you handle start an engine - do not wrap your thumb around the handle - if the engine kicks back you'll need a new one.

@1908Rick8 жыл бұрын
First off, you never mention that this is a replica. You make it sound like Henry Ford actually built this car. He didn't. I did. I built it from pictures of the real deal which sits in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn. The people at the Lane Motor museum need a few lessons on starting and driving this car. There's a needle valve in the fuel dripper. If the weather changes, a small adjustment will be necessary, but trust me, I've had that engine running smooth in weather from 90 degrees in the summer to near zero in the winter (Wisconsin). Also, you mention that it has no power to climb a small hill. There's a knob on the seat near you right leg. That's the throttle. Pull it forward to increase engine RPM. Didn't they tell you that? If the belt is slipping, it needs to be shortened. Leather will stretch. I probably took several inches off the length in the first year. I drove that car in a Fourth of July parade in 2004. It made it from my house to where the parade formed up a mile or so away, then slowly through the entire parade route (1.5 miles) then back home again. I never had to wear a raincoat either. The oilers I put on the engine were fake. The actual oiling came from 2-cycle oil in the gas. Worked perfectly, and wasn't near as messy. I guess they didn't know that and put those silly giant oilers on the motor, dripping oil everywhere. All that being said, I'm glad you guys went and drove it, even though you felt you had to dis it. It was 1896. Nobody knew much about engines yet.

"Everything before 1900 was a terrifying hunk of crap." They also said the Train would never work like 5 separate times and it's still around over 200 years since it's invention in 1804. Yes it was invented in 1804, by a man called Richard Trevithick. So all you Rocketeers (in the railway sense) are wrong. Rocket was the first to out run a horse. Flying Scotsman was the first to 100. Mallard was the first to 126 (while nearly smashing itself to bits in the process). The TGV was the first to 300, and now we have Maglevs which can apparently reach 400 mph. They said people would choke at 30 mph, that they would sink into their seats at 100, and that they would die at 300. Not even the plane or steamboat had this many problems, and they were losing hundreds (thousands in the case of Planes seeing as they grew on everyone by 1914 and they had to serve in the war). So if the Train can get through 3 cases of criticism without a scratch (except for all those lost to scrap in the modernization plans in the 50's and 60's) Then the car is fine. Also don't make me delve into the story of Armagh and what happened on June 12th 1889.

Crappy? Well compared to other horseless carriages of the day I'm sure it was on par. That he built the entire thing including a badly designed engine he had to make work I'd say he did a pretty amazing thing. In order to know what is the right way to make something, you start somewhere. Try driving a model T compared to an A and see what a generation does to a design.

You would probably spend more time maintaining that thing than you would looking after a horse. The horse would be faster too, and more comfortable.

Григорий Александров Well, for most people little more than pictures or stories existed as far as a personal car went. People at the time, especially in rural areas were pretty comfortable with building what they needed and taking care of what they owned. It's hard to keep perspective of the time this was built, simply nothing existed like it in any form of production and affordability. Packard was the same thing, two brothers bought a car that was a piece of junk. The builder told them to try making their own. Packard became a premier builder of luxury cars by the late 1920's. Maybe this was the best car in his state when he built it. It probably was one of few to no others!
@offgridmanpolktn7 жыл бұрын
Ben Dover Yes here we go, the smart man that has never owned or cared for a horse telling us how easy it is. The main reason cars replaced them is the expense and time that needs to be invested every day as compared to a car that only needed servicing on the days you wanted to use it. Go back to history class young man, or actually get some experience of which you wish to speak.

But even if it shakes and vibrates and you don't think it's going to last very long it's already lasted well over a hundred and twenty years which is coarse unlike any of your first four marriages. Ford went on to have a 75% market share which is better than whatever you drive because no car manufacturer as ever matched that score dope.
