Elvis influenced music, hair and clothing styles and was the talk of the nation back in 1956. He was on the cover of magazines and was given a lucrative movie contract. Soon he proved he was a great singer who could master all genres of music.

I love watching these live versions of Elvis back in the early days. Hound Dog is a great song! This was performed on the "Ed Sullivan" show in 1956. His movements were considered scandalous to show on TV. Some shows only filmed him from the waist up.

Elvis had soul because he grew up singing gospel songs in the deep south. His biography says that when he first started singing in public his legs would shake from nerves but since he got such a big reaction, he was told just keep doing whatever it is you're doing. After while, he played the whole thing up, that was all part of his country charm.

Holy crap, I was 3 when this was shown live. Anyway, try to understand that no one, HAD EVER danced like that in public, much less a man. It ignited that spark that is within us all to just dance as we want and move to the music. Before this, dancing was quite formal and scripted. All moves were built in. This man threw that out the window. That's why they all loved him. Of course, the ladies loved him for his looks, as well.

The amazing thing about Elvis --- no-one saw a singer move away from the mic -- musicians stood still and sang. Elvis let loose and did whatever he felt and teenagers and 20 somethings were ready to rebel against older elites. It was the same time the civil rights movement was building up... Elvis would see teens riot as the Youth Revelution exploded across the country and TV was the gasoline that was added to the fire. It was more powerful than the Internet or social media because every home in the country got to choose between 3 to 5 stations And sometimes 50 to 80% of the country may be watching a single broadcast.

You can see moves MJ took or was inspired from from Elvis, the moves of shoulders, or flows or fake starts of moves that would suddenly stop etc. Of course Elvis was also inspired by other rock n roll artists but he took it way further, and then MJ was inspired and took from this and took it to his pop direction. When he was on this show in 56 I was just born Love to watch Elvis tapes from when he just started out & he just got better & better! Elvis sang all genre of music was in all 4 Hall of Fames Rock & Roll, Rhythm & Blues, Country & Gospel won two Grammy’s for his Gospel songs & I think he was a great actor they just used him to make money which his films did he was the highest paid actor at that time! He played a tough character in King creole which showed he could act loved all his movies he was just gorgeous to look at & charisma to no end! but even back then Hollywood was EVIL & used people! He hated Hollywood couldn’t wait to finish out his contract obligations! The ladies were still screaming as loud when Elvis was in his mid-thirties, & beyond. He had a great sense of humour, & sometimes he would playfully twitch his shoulder & they would start screaming. Elvis was 21 here. He was such a superstar (the world’s first), that when he was drafted into the army when he was 22, at the height of his global stardom, & shipped off to Germany for 2 years, even though he had not recorded a single record during those 2 years, & had not sung publicly, there were big crowds of young ladies waiting for him on his arrival back in America, screaming. He became the highest paid actor in Hollywood, at a million dollars a movie (in 1960s) …. & he made a total of 33 movies up until 1968, & then went back to doing live concerts, & within a year, he was a global superstar again.

Ed Sullivan had the camera man shoot from the waist up during that time on the show! 😹 America hadn't seen such enthusiastic fans since Frank Sinatra and his bobby soxers! (that's what they were called, young girls) And we didn't see anything else like it until Beatle mania. They grew up listening to Elvis and Chuck Berry along with Motown which had a definite impact on their music 🎶

You have to understand....in 1956 this was crazy new. We had never seen anything like Elvis on tv. That's why the young ladies are screaming. TV was fairly new in '56 and not everyone owned one. There were sensors who monitored what could be seen....no cursing, no provocative language, no hip shaking like Elvis did here. I'm fact, after this performance, any time Elvis was on tv he was shown from the waist up. Ed Sullivan's was a family show that was broadcast live on Sunday nights. On tv shows like "I Love Lucy", married couples had to sleep in separate beds. The word pregnant couldn't be spoken. ( had to say " in a family way) As a matter of fact, curse words could not be said on tv until cable tv came into being. It was a much different time when Elvis started out. He was sort of a pioneer as he brought his version of R&B (black music) mixed with Rockabilly and gospel and made it his own. In doing so he helped black singers and their songs become popular with white people. You should watch the video Elvis and the Black Community, to truly understand where he came from.and what he wss about. He was a very complex guy. Way ahead of his time. Your next watch should be "Jail House Rock"

Many TV shows wouldn't show him from the waist down. They said he was too vulgar. Nobody else moved like that & the girls went wild. LOL This is a fun song. You might wanna hear it from the album without the screaming girls. 'Jailhouse rock' is another fun one & 'If I can dream' is a beautiful powerful song. 'In the Ghetto' is moving as hell and 'Blue Christmas' is a fabulous Christmas song. So many hits.

I don't think Elvis really had a single signature dance move as much as he just dance the way he wanted to each song and even that change sometimes between performances. I think it had a lot more to do with Harry was 20 years old and had really only been world-renowned as a breaking celebrity for a year or so if that. And probably a lot of these people had not seen him live, maybe a picture in a magazine and read all the gossip and listen to his records and he was on the radio all the time and they just knew that they were going to go off on just every little facial mannerism every little dance move that's all it took. But the great thing is that he also could just have fun with it, and he's always been that way.

I'm an "oldie" & have never heard anyone say Ed & Bogie were brothers. I see no connection. Ed was the son of Peter A. Sullivan & Elizabeth F. Smith & grew up in a working class family, in a small house in Port Chester, NY. Bogart, son of Belmont DeForest Bogart (cardiopulmonary surgeon) & Maud Humphry (well known commercial artist), grew up wealthy, his parents owning an apt. in NYC's Upper West Side & a 55 acre estate in upstate NY.

I have heard people say that the rowd was so loud diring his concerts in the 50's that you couldn't even hear him... This is actually a toned down version from when he first did this on the Milton Berle show... More than likely he was told to...
