In 1956, there was nothing remotely like Elvis. He created a million imitators, but he was in another league. Without him, there would be no Hendrix, Led Zep, Beatles, or Bowie. He still remains unbeatable.

@@davisworth5114 Nobody said that Elvis invented dancing. Come on David, don`t be so damn stiff! He was unique and even more than that. Your arguments are very dull. After Elvis, any black musician had the chance to sell as many records as Elvis. But for some "odd reason" nobody, white or black, came even close. Stay cool and give credit where credit is due. Nobody gets famous for nothing if you like them or not.

"May God bless you as he's blessed me". Said at the most fever pitch moment of his life and maybe modern musics most fever pitch moment. The nation was blessed with new music, new dance moves and a new type of stage presence this night and they loved it. But its not only the man's undeniable and uniquely God given talents, it was his HUMBLENESS that won him over. He could have just bragged about his stellar performance as most would do given a microphone and TV audience after the song ----but when all the lights and attention was on him HE asked GOD TO BLESS US. THAT is a LEGEND MOMENT that changed a lot of minds about Elvis and black music and white music. He broke down walls right there and he would continue the fight to break down music walls and social walls through his music and actions until his untimely death in 1977.

"This man could dance, this man could sing, this man had it all!" You are spot on. This was a fab performance of a classic track. He was 21 in 1956 and he had the world at his feet. As you can hear from the screaming, TV was live - no autotune and no do-overs if you messed up. It's 2021 so it's difficult to appreciate the impact that he had at that time; the only thing I can say is that nobody had ever seen anything like Elvis before. I really enjoyed your warm reaction. It's good to see younger people reacting to Elvis.

@@ianraymondback Actually, i'm also a huge fan since way back as well. I think you are mixing television appearances as "live concert "MOVIES", and they are not considered the same. Elvis did 31 movies and two concert documentaries. Those would be different than Elvis appearing on live t.v. which we know he did a #, including the Aloha from Hawaii, and the Frank Sinatra appearance. Let me know which is the 3rd concert documentary he did? A big of background, Elvis was under contract to continue to do two more movies, but gave them the concert documentaries because he didn't want to do more movies. Respectfully, just trying to make sure we get the right info documented. Let me know otherwise.

The only two acts that brought this level of excitement were Elvis and the Beatles. That’s it. Later, MJ got pretty darn close (save it-I know he was up there), but that’s it. Those three. That’s the Mount Rushmore. May be others (Dylan, Sinatra, the Stones, Queen, The Beach Boys, etc), but in my opinion, those three acts experienced a level of fame noone else did. Had people passing out, having to be carted off on stretchers, and couldn’t go out in public without being absolutely harassed. Don’t know if I’d want that.

Sally, You are right..He only had one more performance in January..After 10+ appearances, sponsors pressured CBS to censor..Go Figure..Think the "Damage" was done by then..LOL...The Rest is History...CBS and Ed had grown very fond of Elvis by now and just before the last show they telegrammed Elvis and suggested he close with a spiritual/Gospel, so Elvis chose his Mother's Favorite. Peace in The Valley...If you go to the Official Graceland You Tube channel in their "Archives' Series, they show the actual telegram from CBS and ED.....

As simple as this performance looks now, it was a new thing to see such actions on stage, parents hated him as the country was largely conservative christian back then. When Elvis first started many radio stations would not play his records, some stations even stopped playing rock and roll all together and made a big deal out of it - until they saw all the money they were losing and things gradually loosened up.

Elvis made over 31 movies, & he sang & danced in most of them. He wanted to be a more serious actor, but this is what his fans wanted, & those movies were make a lot of money, so that is what they wanted him to make. In the end, he got so frustrated that he decided to return to what he enjoyed the most, live on-stage performances, & he did a Comeback Special in 1968, which has some wonderful singing & yes, some dancing too. He loved singing & dancing before his fans, & was always interacting with them, in a way that no other singers were doing back then, & probably not now either. He made his fans feel special … made them feel as if he knew each one of them personally, & that is what made Elvis so very special.

What is truly amazing about all the screaming is that this is a TV show at a time when the youth culture was just beginning (thanks almost completely to Elvis), so this was not a concert full of teenagers like one of his regular shows. This was a TV show so only a small section of the audience were teenage girls. The great majority of the audience were older people there just to see an Ed Sullivan Show. If that studio would've been packed with teenagers it would've been deafening.
