There's a dead-end Alpine road in southwestern Austria from Nauders (Tirol) up to the enclave village of Samnaun (Graubünden). When you get to the end, you're in Switzerland, but cut off from the rest of that country. You can only reach the village by road from Austria. The road is 25 km long. I used to live nearby and have often driven that road. Lovely country.

Called my friend up..fancy going the longest dead end road with a tea room at the end...as a tour guide, she straight away said aye...well, oui, actually... So, squeezed her into the passenger seat and duly found some twisty roads to get to firstly, fort Augustus via the essich road, then a82 invergarry..then on to the road you went down .. absolutely amazing drive ... Got to the tea room... Closed on Tuesday and Wednesday!! Great drive though!! Don't fancy doing it in a big van...will stick to the Mazda go kart! A friend and I walking in that area last June. Two points to remember....... One person had decided that the rule about not taking a caravan down that road, didn't apply to him..... he created serious problems for other road users! Wise to remember that the weather can change quite quickly. My friend and I walked to the bothy at Barrisdale from the car park, and spent the night there. The next day, in glorious sunshine, we followed the stalkers paths over the hills to the Western end of Loch Quaich. We pitched up on the shore. Then we noticed a storm at the dam end of the loch, about 5-6 miles away.... the storm headed our way and within 20 minutes, it was above us..... Very high winds, torrential rain and very noisy thunder storm..... all whipped-up from a sunny calm day in just a few minutes...... It abated almost as quickly as it arrived..... after about 5 minutes directly over head. Fortunately we had our tents up just in time. Useless piece of information::- Until the new road was built around Loch Loyne, (early 50s) the first 5 miles of the road, as far as Tomdoun, was the main road to the Isles....... it must have been a long weary drive in those days!

I just got back from Scotland 10 days ago. I saw and visited a lot. No video can convey what you see in real life, especially when you are driving in Scotland. You have to see it with your own eyes, it is simply impossible to convey these impressions and feelings through a camera. My main base was in Contin Campsite, the Riverside Chalets and Caravan Park near Inverness. I’ve been there only 7 nights . I recommend a very nice and quiet place with friendly owners. Village store 1 minute from camp and fish and chips shop 5 min from camp. close to Jamestown and Strathpeffer. I've been exploring the surrounding area and also Inverness and many more. But when I got back home I was driven by Fort Augustus, Fort William. After that from Glencoe to Bridge of Orchy road A82 along Loch Lomond and the catching Glasgow etc. One week epic journey 1300 miles. In Edinburgh I went to 2021 and also had an epic journey. Regards

Loved this tour Ruth, as I always do with your videos - thank you! You should post the month of your video recordings, as things can look so different at times. My visits to Scotland are for 2 reasons - to enjoy solidarity in nature (love deer!), and to renew my appreciation of humanity by encounters with Scottish people. Their kindness an humour is second to none, and it helps that I am a descendant (great grandfather) and with my name (Scots Gaelic version). Wink!

What a nice drive! I never thought there were such nice mountains in Scotland, it really is beautiful there, we also have one track roads here in Austria where I live, scary at times when someone is coming down the mountain, they have priority and you hope to find a place to pull over so they can continue their way down, thanks for taking us along!

I walked the South Glen Shiel Ridge in 1987 and it looks down on that road from the north from 3000' up. We were intrigued, so we drove it the next day. The scenery is stunning an you feel so isolated, a bit like you're in Alaska or Siberia.

Drumrunie to Reiff is 16 miles long and very beautiful. At Reiff there are fantastic cliffs and usually a good swell making some great picture opportunities with the green water and red sandstone. Usually a quiet road.
@briann25415 ай бұрын
Drumrunie to Culncraig is a few miles longer. Though single track, it couldn't be considered 'dead end' because of the Coigach loop. Ruth switches between single track and dead end. I think she said single track in error.
@ruthaisling5 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing this information, I'd love to go there someday!
@alancumming64075 ай бұрын
@@briann2541 Silly me. It is a single track road. I just thought when you came to the end of a road with no option except to turn back, as you have to do at Culnacraig and Reiff then that was a 'dead end'. You learn something every day.
@briann25415 ай бұрын
@alancumming6407 Yes, so Achvraie to Culnacraig or Altandhu to Reiff would be the dead end roads, even if there's only one road in and out of Coigach. Ruth's road here has no junction along its entire length, making it a true dead end road.
@alancumming64075 ай бұрын
@@briann2541 That's amazing. Wow! So the road I mentioned is not a true dead end road even although it ends in a dead end? This dead end road stuff is a minefield and, it has rules too.

Once upon a time they had the words "PASSING PLACE" on the white sign. Since you called them "Passing Spaces" I'm guessing the ones with words on must have completely disappeared. A major issue with them is that tourists don't realise they are meant to stay on the left (whichever side the actual space is on) except in complicated manoeuvres when a long lorry needs to go along the straight stretch of the road and cannot pull into a short passing place. If you are about to meet a long lorry, approach slowly, or if the lorry is far enough away and there is no other traffic around to confuse, get into the passing place quickly even if it's not on your side of the road.

@@ruthaisling There is a feeling of being transported to another time. Like some kind of a mystical time machine. It reminds me of my childhood going to visit my Scottish Grandmother in Denbigh, Ontario. Very magical. Oh, by the way. We have dead end roads in Canada that go on forever. One ice road in Northern Quebec takes hours to travel and you can't get back till next winter if the ice melts. The landscape isn't nearly as beautiful but the Polar bears, Moose, Belugas and Wolves are spectacular.

Hi, what a brilliant video. Yes I have done a similar route. Rannoch Moor to Loch Etive....but it is only 13 miles. I believe it is where the James Bond movie was filmed. You certainly brighten up the day with your lovely smile and brilliant adventures. I too love Scotland and have been going to the Highlands for 50 years this year....sometimes twice a year to fish on Loch Awe. I will be coming in the next few weeks and cannot wait. Please keep the lovely videos coming. Best wishes David

I went some of the way along the road to climb two Munros on my very first trip to Scotland in 1995. Knocked out by the views. There was no wind, and it took me a while to realise what was so odd. I was hearing (not hearing) complete silence for the first time in my life. Can't wait for the next episode.
