Is it worse off than most major cities? Yes. Is it as bad as people make it out to be? No. I'd much rather drive through any neighborhood in Detroit, and I do for work, than drive through the south side of Chicago.

Thank You Gary, I could see how great Detroit used to be. It appears they have circled their wagons and are trying to get the downtown area re-vitalized around the casinos and sports teams, but that isn't what made Detroit great Our country has lost its way. Detroit, IMO, is symbolic of the entire United States over the last 50 years.

It will rank ontop of New York, Chicago, Tokyo, maybe even compete somewhat with Dubai. Detroit is an enormous city, Downtown isn't even 1/4 of it.

Detroit was once a properous city. This is what happens when corporations are allowed to ship jobs overseas instead of keeping them home. Okay the auto workers got to big for their britches but does that justify selling out the american worker and crippling the economy. The unions in the sixties were collecting payback for abuses in the forties and fifties. This is the result. Now their children and grandchildren don't have jobs and the city is pretty much dead. What a shame.

Detroit is what happens when liberal social issues are put before business.
@DavidisDawei
@DavidisDawei 8 жыл бұрын
+Tnb Spotter Could also be a model for what happens when businesses put profits above everything else. GM put a finance guy in charge of the company for the first time in the 1970's and he had no clue about engineering. He didn't understand that cutting dollars did not translate to the best designs. But GM was king back then, so they thought anything they did was OK. They did not respect their competition and did not respect their customers. I suspect their fall impacted Detroit
@tnbspotter5360
@tnbspotter5360 8 жыл бұрын
DavidisDawei No, that's not it. GM and others moved production to the American south, Canada, and Mexico because it costs too much to operate in Detroit. Foreign brands also set up production facilities other than Detroit. If Detroit wanted those jobs, they would have provided tax rebates, right-to-work laws, less crime, etc. like other cities that want to grow their industrial base. Instead they chose social issues, and abandonment is what they got.
@DavidisDawei
@DavidisDawei 8 жыл бұрын
Tnb Spotter I cannot spell out every detail. That is One factor included in putting profit above everything else. Would you buy a GM product? I sure as shit wouldn't unless it was 50%+ off.

As a male, you knew you were going to have to fight other kids (city life), but I Never worried about getting knifed or shot I don't know if it is because of video games or drugs, but now, a bloody nose or a fat lip is not the worst outcome. Kids today have many advantages thanks to technology today, but the family unit, parenting and our society have gone to the dogs.

Exodus/Steady - Senses Leader If you have the cash and the patience, Detroit may be a good long term investment. There are some beautiful buildings you might get for nothing of you agree to fix them up and pay taxes. You could also re-develop entire neighborhoods if you wanted to create a community. Or you can buy and hold - I suspect the Chinese will be there in the next 5-10 years; their foothold into the USA -

What was the point of this video? To make fun of the city & the people who live there? Detroit may not be the best place ever but you never truly know what it's like until you live there. Please don't think this is an accurate description of my city. p.s. I highly doubt this was recorded in the afternoon (at least the downtown scenes). I am downtown EVERY day & I never see it that empty unless it's early in the am.
@DavidisDawei
@DavidisDawei 9 жыл бұрын
Legaahgurl321 I suggest you post your own video then if you want to show something different. What you saw in this video is what I saw on that time and date. I was there a portion of ONE day and detoured over to see Detroit since I had not had the time to do so before The reason I record videos is to capture memories. I talk to the video camera to document time, date and whatever I'm thinking or feeling at that time. It is much more accurate than my memory over time. If I mention a specific day or time, it is accurate. If I don't know, I'll say "I think it is so and so day or time" Do the Tigers play in the early AM? Look at the sun and the shadows on the buildings/ground. How well do you know Detroit? Clearly, Detroit, like MANY cities across the USA, are in trouble and do NOT have a solution. I do not recall making fun of anyone, but I will say that you will never improve anything if you continue to think everything is A-OK.

***** The downfall of the "American" society has been in clear view for 40 years. What you see in Detroit is across the USA now and will probably get worse. The citizens of this country accept spending trillions of dollars to bomb foreign countries and pay banker bonuses, but then fight tooth and nail not to maintain and invest in their own country for all of its people to enjoy. It is a tragedy

GameAddict51 Sure, Detroit or anywhere else. If businesses continue to suffer/go under and Federal money gets reduced, cities are going to be scrambling to pay for its services... property taxes will probably increase significantly. Lots of elderly people are forced to sell because their fixed incomes can not cover tax increases. I know various people spending $1000-3000 Every month in property taxes... Americans do not really own their property. Stop paying your property taxes and see how long it's your property... When you factor in how much you paid for a "house", total cash out - most property is not worth owning IMO

Just an update. A lot of these places have been either revitalized or torn down, especially in downtown Detroit. There are still a lot of places I would never go to willingly even in the daytime (highland park!) but downtown has a lot of new businesses/companies, housing complexes and sports arenas that either built new facilities or moved there. Wild to see how much has changed in only 4 years, but it feels like a bandaid to a much bigger problem. Hopefully the number of people who move in will sustain these new developments or else I have no doubt it will be in worse shape in 20 more years.

Michigan was State #49 for me to explore (not counting stopovers at Detroit Airport over the years). Michigan is a huge State with very diverse terrain. You drive a couple hours North out of Detroit and you are in farmland, then you are into the Lake resorts and wine country. You then cross into the UP or the Upper Peninsular up to the Canadian border. I never thought much about the State, but Michigan is well worth exploring.

DavidisDawei Yes, Pistons are planning moving downtown. They built the Palace of Auburn Hills as a private financing on budget. I don't have some evidence but it's probably because of Detroit's bankruptcy but I might be wrong. It was dangerous and there was nothing to do. Now there's all sorts of neat stuff down there and a lot of revitalization of all these great old buildings. 8:27 the thing with the lights. my cousin was in detroit one night, driving around like you. stuck at a red. cop pulls up beside him yelling "man, are you insane? you gotta get the hell out of here right now. follow me" and escorted him out with sirens on. next time you're there, probably just use the red lights as a 4 way stop and get the hell out.

HaHa - Amen - I almost ran that light. If it was night time, I would not have stopped, but once the day started to subside, I boogied on out of the city. I kept hearing that song in my head..."The Freaks Come out, The Freaks Come out at Night" FYI, I did NOT see a single cop once I left the vicinity around the Baseball Park

Damn I live in Alaska so the price of living is very high, I've been looking at the different price ranges for houses in the US and I thought Detroit holy shit! that's dirt cheap! They have cute brick houses even mansions for $4000. So I asked my self is Detroit really that bad? Is the crime really that bad? So I'm glad I saw this video, cause damnn.

On the bright side, it probably has hit bottom and over time, perhaps it will come back... especially when the Chinese start running it. Don't all people living in Alaska get a check every year from the government from oil proceeds?
@momsspaghetti3767
@momsspaghetti3767 7 жыл бұрын
I really hope Detroit gets cleaned up! Yea about that money us Alaskans get. If you have lived in Alaska for at least two years you can apply for the PFD and get a little cash before Christmas, and yes it's from the oil proceeds.

+Liberals Are The Racists (Conservative Knight) I'm in NH and all of the politicians are here this week before the primary election. US Citizens expect these politicians and government to solve these issues, but when they find out government only creates problems, it is too late...my point being your observation is accurate - and hundreds of thousands of "Detroiters" voted with their feet and moved

What if I said I was white? Grew up on 7 mile and Livernois most my life! We weren’t rich but always had food, clothes, everything we need, most people I went to school with didn’t give no problems. I kept to myself and talked with my select few. The only weird thing to happen to me in the city of Detroit was walking down Joy Road and someone asked me if I wanted to buy weed! I declined and went on my way. Usually you’ll be alright if you’re not looking to buy dope, don’t be disrespectful of others. The Eastside of Detroit has always been rough but the Westside has its spots. Downtown is great! Downtown Detroit has always been nice! Coleman Young did a lot to revamp downtown back then! I wish Mayor Duggan would be more engaged with the neighborhoods but it’s what it is!

Detroit has always been nice? I suppose this is why those who disagreed saw the futility of the situation and voted with their feet.

I am not from the U.S but am i right that basically Detroit was handed over to a majority of black people in good condition when companies like ford etc. moved and white people moved with them and this is what they have done to the city?
@DavidisDawei
@DavidisDawei 8 жыл бұрын
All families, but especially, the Black family has been decimated over the last 50 years; so I think this might be a factor. 70% of children are born to a single Mother and the Grandmother will often raise the child because the Mother is incapable. A Very serious problem in the USA, and this applied to white, black and brown, is that the givernment has asserted itself to take the role of "Daddy", so people today don't need a Man in the house when the government is going to provide everything to them. Once people are reduced to "surviving" rather than "thriving", this is when society ends up looking like Detroit. It is in Many, Many places around the USA as it falls to Third World Status.

lots of these comments are comming from people who live prodominently white states, small states with small populations in the north east that have very few people of ethnic differences."white bread" they have no idea what it's like living in a large city. New York's crimes are way more than any other city in the usa. most are unique to New York; muggings, subway robberies, pick pockets, scam artists,etc. both chicago and new york went thru the period when they had to rebuild. the movies of the late sixties and early seventies show the run down apartment buildings and projects. so don't act like this something new. crimes in those two cities count in the tens of thousands. not just homicides, but crime period. as far as the stipped houses in Detroit, most of the people that did the looting came in from the out lying cities for some quick money.

Detroit has been like this for DECADES though. Whites fled. Basically gave the city to the blacks. What have they done since the early 70s ?
