It appears they have circled their wagons and are trying to get the downtown area re-vitalized around the casinos and sports teams, but that isn't what made Detroit great Our country has lost its way. Detroit was once a properous city. This is what happens when corporations are allowed to ship jobs overseas instead of keeping them home. Okay the auto workers got to big for their britches but does that justify selling out the american worker and crippling the economy. The unions in the sixties were collecting payback for abuses in the forties and fifties. This is the result. Now their children and grandchildren don't have jobs and the city is pretty much dead. What a shame.

GM put a finance guy in charge of the company for the first time in the 1970's and he had no clue about engineering. He didn't understand that cutting dollars did not translate to the best designs. DavidisDawei No, that's not it. GM and others moved production to the American south, Canada, and Mexico because it costs too much to operate in Detroit. Foreign brands also set up production facilities other than Detroit. If Detroit wanted those jobs, they would have provided tax rebates, right-to-work laws, less crime, etc. like other cities that want to grow their industrial base. Instead they chose social issues, and abandonment is what they got.

I was there a portion of ONE day and detoured over to see Detroit since I had not had the time to do so before The reason I record videos is to capture memories. I talk to the video camera to document time, date and whatever I'm thinking or feeling at that time. It is much more accurate than my memory over time. If I mention a specific day or time, it is accurate. If I don't know, I'll say "I think it is so and so day or time" Do the Tigers play in the early AM? Look at the sun and the shadows on the buildings/ground. How well do you know Detroit? Clearly, Detroit, like MANY cities across the USA, are in trouble and do NOT have a solution. I do not recall making fun of anyone, but I will say that you will never improve anything if you continue to think everything is A-OK.

I've never been afraid to walk the city and have never had a bad incident. The people I met in town, at the bars and restaurants were friendly and kind. The oil and auto companies disbanded trolley/train systems across the USA and replace them with gas engine buses, so I am not surprised that Detroit did not add a subway/metro even though it would be better for the rider in the Winter months or when there's heavy traffic

Americans do not really own their property. Stop paying your property taxes and see how long it's your property... I drive an 18-wheeler cross country. Last year I picked up a 50 yr-old black guy who was hitching on I-80 in NJ. He was a nice guy. I drove him all the way to Toledo Ohio, for he was on his way to his sister's house in Motown. He lived in the Bronx for 15 yrs and Detroit for 15 years and he told me that he felt safer in the South Bronx at 2AM then he did in Detroit at 2 in the afternoon.

To answer your question , no. I've traveled a lot and honestly Detroit is not the worst city I have visited there are a ton of activities, bars, restaurants and high end luxury lofts. Detroit does have some dangerous areas like with any city. The onr thing that I will say about Downtown Detroit is that driving can be confusing .

Thanks for the update Jama, I think I talked about my observation during the drive that the city was attempting to bring all the sports teams into that same vicinity...reminded me of circling the wagons. my kids graduated from detroit schools. both speak french they leaned at their school(FLICS) foriegn language immersion cultural studies. my grand daughter go there now. great school in a good neighborhood. my son had been at the top his class all through his 12 yrs of school. was on the deans list at Mumford H.S.. graduated college with a degree in criminal justice. still fluent in french. a child will lean if he/she wants to learn. and we didn't live in any of these shitty areas you show.

I recall reading about some Asian kids a few years ago who went to Detroit Public high schools and scored 1600 on their SATs. Just an update. A lot of these places have been either revitalized or torn down, especially in downtown Detroit. There are still a lot of places I would never go to willingly even in the daytime (highland park!) but downtown has a lot of new businesses/companies, housing complexes and sports arenas that either built new facilities or moved there. Wild to see how much has changed in only 4 years, but it feels like a bandaid to a much bigger problem. Hopefully the number of people who move in will sustain these new developments or else I have no doubt it will be in worse shape in 20 more years.

+Stevie Bernardoni You need to stay alert in any city, but I was extremely curious to explore and see the city for myself. As long as you keep moving, you should be fine. Michigan was State #49 for me to explore (not counting stopovers at Detroit Airport over the years). Michigan is a huge State with very diverse terrain. You drive a couple hours North out of Detroit and you are in farmland, then you are into the Lake resorts and wine country. You then cross into the UP or the Upper Peninsular up to the Canadian border. I never thought much about the State, but Michigan is well worth exploring.

DavidisDawei​ Yes, Pistons are planning moving downtown. They built the Palace of Auburn Hills as a private financing on budget. I don't have some evidence but it's probably because of Detroit's bankruptcy but I might be wrong. So maybe that's why they moved outside Detroit and opened a new arena and started playing at the Palace since 1988-89 NBA season in Auburn Hills.

Yeah, my Focus has been super-reliable as well. Birmingham has changed a lot in the last 10 years (for the better). I moved out of state for ten years and just recently moved back, and I'm consistently amazed at how much better things are. When I was a kid, you didn't go downtown. It was dangerous and there was nothing to do. Now there's all sorts of neat stuff down there and a lot of revitalization of all these great old buildings. It still has a ways to go, but it's getting better. Worth a trip if you ever get the chance.

lots of these comments are comming from people who live prodominently white states, small states with small populations in the north east that have very few people of ethnic differences."white bread" they have no idea what it's like living in a large city. New York's crimes are way more than any other city in the usa. most are unique to New York; muggings, subway robberies, pick pockets, scam artists,etc. both chicago and new york went thru the period when they had to rebuild. the movies of the late sixties and early seventies show the run down apartment buildings and projects. so don't act like this something new. crimes in those two cities count in the tens of thousands. not just homicides, but crime period. as far as the stipped houses in Detroit, most of the people that did the looting came in from the out lying cities for some quick money.
