Such a great public service announcement! I still remember when I went on my first track day almost 2 decades ago I purchased instruction and the very first thing I was taught was how to sit properly. Thankfully back then I wasn’t a “boy racer” and had the position setup about 80% correct, but the final 20% was noticeable in terms of getting every sensation and feedback from the car and comfortably controlling the car near the limits. That instructions like that are worth their weight in gold I tell you!!

Uncle YS, you were spot on with the steering adjustment using the base of the palm for reference. It's something I don't see in many instructions. The only time I remember someone mentioning this technique to correctly set the steering position was from my Dad years back when I started to learn driving some 30+ years back

Thanks, driving has essentially been the same all along, only the cars get faster and handle better, but at some point, some things will still give - so driving skills are still needed.

good tips...basically what im doing now..people end up saying my seating position like racing position..lol.for me i heard its better the wrists to be able to rest comfortable ontop of the steering, cause when ur steering or having a sharper angle/locked elbows arent really good for safety and its easier to turn with bent elbows than straightened elbows

My understanding is that when you have both hands holding the steering at the 3/9 o'clock position, your arm should be approx 90 degrees (L shaped). This can be achieved with steering adjustments and or seat incline. This also ensures appropriate distance between chest and steering for airbag deployment.

Yes, agree with you. Almost 38 years in driving with comfort and enjoy it.

And to add on, for tall people like me especially in a semi bucket seat, it's better to get a lower seat rail as it will either be that you're too close to the steering wheel or your legs are too far from the pedals whichever way you adjust the seat. And your head will be almost touching the roof 😂

Hi Uncle YS Khong. Hope you are recovering well. I drive the current generation of MYVI and I have difficulty getting the right driving position. If I get the footing right, I cannot get my arms position right. I'm 1.73m tall and my friends often commented I'm one with slightly longer legs with shorter arms. I ended up with the seating angle ridiculously straight, if you know what I mean. May I know if adding a lumbar support would help? So that my seat could be slanted reasonably to help position my arms correctly?

@YSKhongDrivingАй бұрын
Yes, use all the adjustments available to get you the best poaition. Just remember the leg and hand position parameters and also the small of the back.
@wolfgangreitz9065Ай бұрын
Common is not to adjust height of the seat so that not only hand and feet position is correct, but also view is restricted. Eyes should be at about middle of the windshield or top of head a fist below the roof.
@MrAcc45Ай бұрын
It would good if it is compulsory for car manufacturers to provide telescopic steering standard item. Also for driving schools and car sellers new or used to provide car proper seating instructions.

Not all cars has steering telescopic adjustment. So either your arms are comfortable and your legs are stretched out or vice versa.
@YSKhongDriving5 күн бұрын
If the steering reach is not adjustable, you compensate by using the seat slider to adjust your feet tjen use the seat back adjustment to adjust your hand position. So long as you understand the rationale of seating position.

I'm driving a manual transmission Toyota Fortuner, I make sure that when I tip toe, the clutch will hit the floor. And my upper part of my body, like you said is the same with the buttocks, but my palms can reach the 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock of the steering wheel with a little bend of my elbows. But I don't like my belly, I eat too much rice, it's big. 😂 I need to exercise more.😅
@YSKhongDrivingАй бұрын
Adjust the steering a little higher - seems you need to sit just a wee but closer - max clutch at tip toe is stretching it a bit
@unknownuser677Ай бұрын
Yeah..actually same position if you siiting in the office, dining table..this is the basic for everyone...should upright the back posture.. When you lay down a bit in driving..thats why got space (can fit , 2 car) between your car and front car...and then keep complaint car cutting queue...😂😂
