South of the Border started as a bar by Alan Schafer a beer distributor when the county just north of the border in North Carolina went dry. They expanded into selling fireworks because they were illegal in North Carolina. They also had a motel, gas stations, souvenir stores, restaurants, arcades, amusement rides, and mini golf. Today it is a shell of what it once was. At one time it employed over 700 people and was the largest employer in Dillon County, SC. Alan Schafer died in 2001, but as far as I know, his family still own South of the Border.

Welcome to NC! I went to college at UNCP near South of the Border. Back in the day, it used to be a happening place- especially when you could go up in the sombrero. A great stopover place if you had kids en route to Florida. Also many from NC would "run away' and get married in Dillon, SC and honeymoon at SOB :-).

I remember the south of the border sign from our Fl to NC trip last summer. My favorite part of the video was Ms. Hill saying hi to everyone then saying “who are you. “ to the guy she didn’t know. How she said it in the moment gave me a chuckle.

You’ll probably never see this so I’ll put it on the other video too, but here’s my story about duck: my family has gone to duck every single year of my life. I am 16 now and haven’t gone a year without going there(literally since I was in my moms stomach). For about 13 years, my family and my entire dad's side of the family (about 17 of us)rented the same house. It was so comforting to go back to it every year. It was almost like a second home. We have so many unforgettable memories at Duck. I hope you all make the same🫶 just in the last three years; our schedules got too busy to align. My older cousins don’t want to take time off work, so we haven’t gone on the same old duck trip I grew up loving. It makes me so sad, and I miss it every day of the summer. It was always my favorite week seeing your family do it is so nice, and it makes me reminisce all of my happy memories. Your family looks like they would be the perfect family to go to the beach with all of the fun activities, especially the themed dinners. I love the beach video so much. It is always my favorite one! I miss Duck so much, but I hope you all make the best memories. It is my happy place, and my family (5 total) still visits every summer, but it’s not as fun without all 17 of us. Cherish this week, and I hope you have many more to come❤️❤️ I hope one day my siblings and I will carry on the tradition of the annual duck trip I hope yours do to!!!

My family is headed to outer banks this week and we have gone for 10 years, this time will be 10years we usually stay in nags head but last year we stayed on the bay in Avon. The outer banks is so fun my family loves it we drive from New Jersey to North carolina and we have at least 16 people with us we all chip in for a house and this year we were lucky to find a beach front house it usually takes us about 6-8 hours depending on traffic last year it took longer because we were staying really far out. My family and I discovered this ice cream place called surf and spoon and this place is so good last year we drove 1 hour to get to it. Also have you ever been to super wings it’s a really cool souvenir store that has literally everything and we always go there when we are there. I hope you enjoy your trip or enjoyed your trip depending on when you left.

Seriously is it just me? Only person you can hear good is whoever is holding the camera. You ask questions to someone and the answer is muffled or quiet. Music is always loud, and when Jill whispers can’t ever hear what she is whispering! I’m constantly turning volume up n down throughout the whole video. I don’t have to do that with other you tube videos only it’s the Donnellys.
