Good ol Mauna Kea the unforgettable gruesome walk when our unit flew to the Big Island to conduct Military training. That's so cool how you're literally driving through the clouds. On a hot summer day here in the southeast US, I always look up at clouds and wonder what it's like up there, like how high up they are and how cold it is.

I remember my parents took me here as a child. I grew up on the Island of oahu so when I came here, it was the first time I ever saw snow on the ground and felt the cold. I also had to get an emergency oxygen mask because it’s so high up that some people can’t breathe.

Awesome. We drove up to the visitor center when we were there and they had a sign there that said you couldn't drive to the top without a 4WD and that rental car companies would charge you something like 2,000 dollars to come tow you out. There was no way I was going to risk that. Looking back I wish we had just done a tour. It was still very cool at the visitors center. The mountain does look really enormous coming from the ocean to almost 14,000 feet. It really slopes gradually too.

It's the descent. 2-wheel drive cars may lose grip and tumble down the mountain. 4-wheel drive cars are highly recommended so that your car doesn't yeet itself off the cliff.

The only danger is to people who don't know how to drive in mountains. The trip is about a 13,000' drop in elevation one of the largest in the world. If you don't use low gear and try to break all the way down your breaks may fry and then you crash because you have no breaks! If you use low gear its no problem at all. Another problem is Hawaiian people don't know how to drive on snow or ice because except on the top of this mountain there is no snow or ice in Hawaii.

What's annoying is that I saw two vehicles(at least) that were not 4X4. A Nissan Rogue and a sedan were both seen on the descent from the summit. I saw nothing on this road that makes you really need a 4X4, unless you have no clue what you're doing. The Mt Washington Auto Road has much narrower actual road, is dirt and gravel most of the way up and is even steeper in sections. Yet, they make it a destination that hundreds, if not thousands, utilize in a day. What's really annoying me the most is that to rent ANYTHING that is acceptable to take to the top is nearly impossible. And if you want to take any of the myriads of tours, be willing to shell out over $200/person. So it's either pay $800 vs $350 for 4X4 rental to sedan, or pay the same for a tour. Or hike to the top. Which I don't think I'm ready to do. Honestly, just rent a car and learn to use Low gear and modulate your brakes. This is not some death dealing drive...
