Great video. Now that you can somewhat disable the ESP for these Up! GTIs, I hope there will be Mechanical LSDs available from Quaife for these cars, then it'll be a properly fun car to drive! (even if it may be slight overkill when these aren't over 200hp)

why do you care about esp or on off for an lsd?

Thanks for the video Andrew - not something I’d do personally but good to see that it can actually be done. Is there anything else of interest that can be altered via the diagnostic tool or is it all more fault detecting and the like? Also, did you receive the data plug with the car or did you specifically request one? I’m particularly looking forward to a more extensive video where you compare the Up to your other GTI models!

Andrew , A bit but not massively frustrating . 7/10th to 9.5/10th might add a bit more fun, around the Wiltshire twisty stuff and powering out of the bends and off the line. Nearly 5000miles on the clock now and so much fun. VFM Smile/ £/Miles

Not sure if it is the exact same thing but in the Brazilian version of the normal up tsi there’s a plug right next to the right rear wheel that when unplugged deactivates traction control and abs completely, which is good if you want to just play around a bit and once you connect it again it goes back to normal
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 жыл бұрын
Hi FMC 720. Thanks for commenting . Sounds like you are just unplugging the ABS sensor which will switch off ABS and ESP. It's quite dangerous to drive a car that has been designed for ABS without it active as the car is set up as if ABS is active so I'd think carefully about driving like this (your insurance would be invalid in the UK) but I'd imagine it can be fun too👍

volkswizard i believe a VAG turbo engine not reflashed is leaves reliable performance potential unexplored and one might almost say wasted.
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 жыл бұрын
The engines are OK (although 300 PS from 2.0L in Golf R is asking a lot in standard tune wouldn't you say?). It's the other bits that can be problems though, for example Golf R manual clutch reliability is woeful and not being changed under warranty. With regards to the up!, as standard, power/brakes/chassis are all well matched, add more power/torque and this composure will fall apart. If anything the engine outshines the other bits. Ponder this - many commentators, often ill-informed (Misha Charoudin for example) say the up! GTI has a remapped 90 PS TSI engine so can it be remapped again reliably to 150 PS or are these people wrong and it has a stronger engine? All I know is that 99% of people who will remap you engine won't back it up with their own warranty which says enough (to me anyway!)
@meshplates
@meshplates 6 жыл бұрын
volkswizard well they can't offer full warrantee certainly. Obviously of you use it like an absolutely idiot you will start having problems. Its just a lot of fun to have extra overtaking potential and low end torque. If you want to go WOT all the time, maybe stock is best.

Very interesting! But keep in mind that some people will want the traction control off but don't want to spend the money on the software and the laptop. Nevertheless, Great video.

So if I’m correct you can deactivate but each time you turn the ignition off it will reset to standard, so if you did want it off every time you drove it you would need to use vcds each time?
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed. Best way to think of it is like turning it off with the button like on other cars have. If you turn off ignition and back on, it always turns ESP back on. The VCDS process shown works exactly like pressing the button but obviously takes longer and needs equipment BUT it's better than nothing or the other method that requires pressing buttons and pedals in a certain order to deactivate it only up to 20mph. I am sure someone will find a better fix in time but I'm planning to try out the new handling course at GTI International next weekend so can't wait!

Is the mic a little too close to you or with some padding on top of it? Because the voice always sounds a little muffled, I think when outside
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 жыл бұрын
Hi jackgmail2000, thanks for commenting. I too have noticed the audio changes which is odd as mic is in the same place. Can only assume it's the bending over or talking into a confined space (in this case the car) that changes it or I speak more softly. If you've seen my earlier videos with no mic, this audio is pin sharp in comparison but will see what I can do :)

It cool you can do that but I’m just wondering, wouldn’t that void the warranty?
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting Scott. That's a reasonable question. I didn't even really think of that as all the process does is activate something that's already present within the software rather than change what the factory supplied. I very much doubt this will leave any trace electronically and seeing as it resets when the ignition is cycle, it's not really a modification as such. The effect of deactivating the ESP really is no different to pressing the 'deactivate ESP' button on a car which has one fitted and that does not affect the warranty. But if you are unsure then do not do it.

@@volkswizard I mean they didnt design it for you to disable the esp otherwise they would have fitted a button.. So I really belive this could void it if they really want to hang from something.

@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Mick, glad you enjoyed it and thanks for commenting. I haven't found a way to turn off the TC and leave the ABS active. I'm sure it's possible to wire in a switch as per other vehicles have from the factory but not sure how complicated this is as it needs to talk to engine ECU and ABS controller. I am sure some bright spark will work it out!

Out of curiosity, do you know to activate/deactivate certain features, for instance auto-locking, and if so, would you be willing to perform such coding to another individuals car?
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 жыл бұрын
Good point as auto-locking by default isn't enabled. If this can't be done using the computer then I am sure I can work it out. On 6R Polo dealers said this was impossible but it wasn't. Having said that, I don't do work on other peoples' cars because of liability issues e.g. program auto lock and someone injured or worse because they get stuck in the car and it could get messy - probably why dealers say no :)

The car needs an ASR button like the A2 has
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 жыл бұрын
Agreed! Why they couldn't do that just for the GTI even though the electronics clearly have the switch off function integrated into them is a mystery but there must be a reason that only the development team know and I don't think it's simply the cost of the switch.

Surely there must be a fuse that could be pulled to disable the TC ?
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 жыл бұрын
TC is integral part of ABS so I am pretty sure it shares the same fuse and trust me you don't want to drive a car designed for ABS without ABS working as this driver worked out the hard way kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4fQp6JvgMh4ZtU

I've got no ABS and no ESP, problem with a lot of new cars is that effectively a computer is holding your hand while you're driving and it makes drivers very very lazy and reliant on assists. If you put them in the drivers seat; especially drivers that have passed in the last 5 years, of a 90s vehicle, most of them won't have a clue. I know this from classmates at university that have passed and being a mature student, it's fun to have a laugh and a giggle when they try to drive my car and they constantly stall 😂

To turn Traction Controll off you dont even need vcds, you can turn it off by just doing 3 steps. 1. ignition on (engine off), 2. warning light on, 3. Push the acceleration 5x, now Start the engine

I did two dyno runs with the new up gti and there wasn‘t a problem caused by the traction control. I did not tested it on the Street (with turning rearwheels).
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 жыл бұрын
On a dyno, doesn't the car get confused by the non turning rear wheels and switch off the ABS & TC anyway? In the dry on the street, I accelerated hard in 1st, changed to second and as soon as clutch released the TC kicked in and cut the power as if the clutch had broken. It's not very a very clever system. A little chirrup in second gear is normally allowed in a lot of VW cars without TC intervening.
@Puddingtops

Ölfilm That’s what I’m going to do. Watched a German road test and this is what the bloke testing it did and he accelerated off the line in a cloud of tyre smoke and I’m pretty sure it stayed off well over 30 mph . Much easier than carrying a lap top around and plugging it into the obd11 port👍

volkswizard I used to drive an up with the 60PS engine and I found the traction control even on that to be overzealous. As you said it kills the power on hard shifts into second and even in first allows basically no wheel spin whatsoever, which can actually be disadvantageous. I upgraded to a polo with a substantially more powerful motor and found the TC by comparison much less intrusive.
