Greetings TourLifers!
On this week's episode of Driving Home, we head over to help out our new friends with their recent vintage RV purchase. April and her sister Annie recently purchased a 1978 Jamboree Rallye named "Loretta." She wasn't running great, so we decided to give it a little love. We're huge fans of Dodge based Class C motorhomes, because the parts are cheap and readily available at any Autozone or O' Reilly's.
The charging system was acting was a little suspicious, so we recommended that they purchase a new voltage regulator. Sometimes these just go bad and are extremely affordable to replace. With a bit of carburetor tuning and a timing adjustment, their RV was back to running like a champion.
Next, we dug through the house and infrastructure. The previous owner had painted the interior ceiling black to hide water damage, but April and Annie had already ripped out the gross wood by the time we arrived. We were able to narrow down where the water was getting in and went over how to properly seal where it was leaking.
Finally, we dove into the propane system. The seal was bad on there shutoff valve, so we recommended they pull out the the tank and have it resealed at our local propane shop.
All in all, they ended up with a great RV for what they paid and are well on their way to living their nomadic dream.
Thanks for tuning in! Hit us in the comments for any questions, feedback or just to say hi!
Until next week, stay adventurous and go save something from the wrecking yard!
-Matt & Eric

I am a 54 year old lady. I just bought a ‘77 Dodge Sportsman. This guy has given such a great job teaching how everything functions, in relation to other systems. My vintage motorhome has a decent engine. A tune up with attention to carb cleaning. Timing adjustment. And that’s it! Besides framing out the back end. New flooring. And soon, new ish roof.

Great video, there needs to be more people like you helping those in over their heads. One quick correction....While you 100% correctly described the gauge, Dodge B-vans in the 70's used Ammeters, not Voltmeters. You were also spot-on in saying that the voltage regulators can be a culprit. I just replaced the regulator in our 1976 Monaco Class C, built on a 1975 MB300 chassis. Next year we replace the suspension and steering components, add the awning back on and she's back to new condition. I've spent the last three years restoring her.

That no 78. Early 70s to 1977 markerlights on van and dash is all I need to see. It's no 1978. 1978 dash ran to 1993 I believe. 77 is better any way. 78 or 79 was the beginning of the lockup torque converter. 1977 727 much better. Awesome buy.

I am disabled and always wanted a rv. I became homeless due to the price of housing. While at Joy Junction Shelter in Albuquerque NM, I seen an abandoned 78 dodge sportsman on the property. I asked the shelter what they wanted for it. The rv was titled in the shelters name. They wanted $1500. I paid $1400 cash for it. Need to replace power steering pump, alternator, battery and replace all fluids since it has been sitting for 3 years. Think I got a deal.

Fan-tastic love this episode!! I've watched a few of your drive home episodes and have enjoyed them all. We just bought a 77 triple E Class C with the fiberglass roof, I love the history of it and being Canadian it tops our list in support and buy local, well okay she's (Yolanda) a little old and the company is no longer around, so I'm not sure if that's really supporting local, but it does cover the buy an old one and save her from the wrecker... she needs some work as it has some water damage in the roof and over the cab, a little more than I anticipated... but so far not more than I think we can handle. Who knows perhaps one day we will be in the area and we will stop in, would love to meet you guys, you have a great show, top notch and a real joy to watch. Scott

Wish u could have a look at mine but I don't think you will be in Canada at all lol .. I did the same thing as these ladies and got a rv but without anyone having a look at it first. Just took ot for a test drive and fell in love and so did the gf so we bought it on the spot. And when I got it inspected all the problems I was hoping for came true. But other than that I'm slowly fixing it up and almost road worthy just need to replace one rear axle seal. Oh yah mines a 1976 dodge sportsman diplomat.

I literally just bought a ‘78 Dodge Monaco in Dallas, TX! I’m not ignorant of car mechanics, but know little to nothing about RV’s. The overall state of the one I got is- drivable, rebuilt carb, water damage, missing cabinetry and stove, seemingly functional generator and electrical systems, possible aftermarket a/c unit on top (weirdly installed), dual motor fridge (unsure if it works), and good Lord, I haven’t braved to look at the plumbing yet, but it doesn’t seem too terribly bad at surface glance (no smell). If you have any constructive comments or input at all, I would love to hear it!

Hi if the creator of this channel is still searching for oldies but goodies, I’m in San Diego and I bought a 1978 Winnebago Itasca andddd very much like some others it was an impulse love buy lol. The interior endured minor water damage in the front and I took out the wood and replaced it and sealed the roof. But I don’t have much knowledge on my engine and tanks and reading the pdf online manual doesn’t do much justice for a kinesthetic learner like me. So if your in the California area this is like a beacon signal for help! Thanks 😊

No comments on tire size. Original was 16 1/2 inches. Hard to find....lousy selection. Previous owner switched rims to 16". Got 6 nice tires for $2000. When I went to the Jeep dealer to buy a set of Jeep LED head lights...they wouldn't talk about it.They looked at me and said that I couldn't afford them. They laughed me out of the parts dept. I got em elsewhere. Have added an extra 30 gal fresh water tank, and a wood stove. Removed rear ladder so no one has easy access to roof goodies. Have a 22 x 28 diamond tread roof hatch with a pull down ladder inside the camper. Try public library for old motor repair books. ps Elkhart IN

I need help. I have a 77 dodge motorhome outdoorsman. I was able to keep the lights on and have power without power hooked up from an outside source. Then a fuse or something broke and I got no power. There is a power meter built into the wall showing 11.5 volts But there is no longer any power in the motorhome when it’s not plugged in. There was power before. I believe it’s a fuse. Under the seat there is a regular breaker that you flick up and down. And none of the breakers were down. And to the right of that breaker box there are 4 red buttons that say 15 on them that you can push. I pressed them and nothing changed. Do those little red buttons you push twist or torn and come out ? Could there be those glass fuses inside that ?
