Drizzt Was CUT From The D&D Movie!

Some exclusive breaking TTRPG and Fantasy news on The Character Sheet today, as one of the producers of Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves, Jeremy Latcham, has confirmed that Drizzt Do'Urden, the legendary Drow ranger and star of dozens of D&D books and games, was actually in the original Honor Among Thieves script, but was cut and replaced by Xenk the Paladin after some "Controversy" surrounding the drow.

@JnEricsonx a time ago, I had a regular correspondence with Bob. Believe me, he wants to see Drizzt on a proper screen, but it is entirely out of his hands. WotC is not a good company to write under - luckily, Bob is an incredible storyteller. Most people I know that have read the Drizzt series have never played D&D. As Im sure that most people would enjoy a dark elf series beginning with Homeland. But it MUST end with Passage to Dawn. Ive stressed this on many occasions that the series shouldve ended there, but Bob said something to the effect of "I have three kids and good colleges are expensive." Haha And kudos on the original raised designed cover - that's a keeper! 🤓 Youll notice that the original text sets Drizzt on the surface for 200 years....😉

I loved Xenk. Made me feel like he was a DMPC that the DM had to bring in because the party was lost. Or maybe like a veteran player the DM asked to join for a session because they were going into the Underdark and they were WAY underleveled and no one had any knowledge of the area.

If anyone has ever read or listen to the audiobook series, "The Legend of Drizzt" it's probably a good thing they left Drizzt out. I doubt they would be able to do that character justice on screen. His background history, adventures, and level of introspection makes the book series phenomenal.

I'm glad this worked out this way. Having Drizzt in a role like like feels odd. Too large of a role to be a cameo, too small for such a well known character UNLESS it was literally a cameo. I love Xenk. I don't usually like Paladins either. They're usually so haughty and stuffy and unlikable. His personality actually makes sense, as he survived such a traumatic, injurous spell. He isn't uptight or arrogant or narcissistic. He's super genuine, he just doesn't have the neurological connections required for processing certain things in typical ways. As an Autistic person myself, I really appreciate how they made him neurologically different, but in a way that was NOT random tokenization for "virtue" points. It makes sense in the story. It actually tells you something key to the plot, and it makes him seem like an individual person, with realistic (for the world/setting) strengths and weaknesses that make his inclusion in the story really matter. Honestly, we haven't seen such great original character writing in a film in... I don't even remember how long.

I think Drizzt is more scaled in power level for the next movie when likely they’ll follow up with making Zastan the final boss of the group and they’re a bit stronger but maybe Doric and Simon peace out and they need new characters to join the party. I’m guessing Ed’s daughter will be the rogue but they’ll probably recruit Drizzt and maybe even Minsc and Boo or some other well known character.

It was better with Xenk. His character was memorabl, hilarios, and instant grabs you. Drizzt just wouldn’t work like that on the screen - he is far more of a character you love over time, not instantly. Also, Drizzt wouldn’t just leave like Xenk did, he’d have stuck around. And that was a low level adventure, a high level character sticking around would have broken it. Xenk was a high level character, but didn’t stick around. Drizzt (or Xenk) could have just killed everyone quickly, making the characters pointless. The more I re-watch this movie, the more I appreciate how well done it was. My wife, a Harry Potter nerd (but not a D&D nerd) loved it. My tween daughters loved it. My 5yr old says it is her favorite movie, keeps re-watching it, although she insist it is called Dragons and Dungeons. When Holga “died” during our first watch, she was bawling. I really, really hope the finances permit more. I’d hate to see D&D done such justice on the big screen not make it.

Drizzt needs to start the right way with the right supporting cast. Im not sure if his origin story would be the best start.. same with his first appearance in icewind dale. A good medium would do well. And i kinda think he could do a stand alone film as intro, but the right names would need to be there for a studio to really pull it off

If they do anything with Drizzt it should be based on R.A. Salvatore's books and I think starting in the Underdark at Drizzt's conception could be an epic series of cinematography. They have a story that would produce a film worthy of carrying on Tolkien's torch in a way, a homage if you will. Yet still completely original and beautiful and terrible at the same time.

As much as I would have loved to see Drizzt, choosing him would have opened up several cans of worms. 1. Innevitably, they would fail to make a Drizzt that would perfectly match his character across all the books and games he's been in. That's just how is with fanbases. 2. There is a TON of cultural baggage and controversies surrounding the Drow. 3. There isn't really a good character tie for Drizzt to the Red Wizards of Thay (that I'm aware of).
