I always seem to get diarrhea when my family and I are traveling to Florida to see my grandparents. It’s always right before we leave the hotel and get back on the road on our second day of driving. (takes two days to drive down there from Michigan)

On my honeymoon in Jamaica my new bride and I sat down for a romantic dinner on the beach. I had a nice glass of ice water with my dinner… for the rest of my vacation I planned my life around regular visits to the toilet.

This maybe entirely anecdotal, but I once caught the most severe diarrhea in Peru after taking all the safety measures (rather obsessively). It was very frustrating ! My employers call the doctor and the first thing he asks me after I exhaustively detailed my eating habits was: "what water did you use for brushing your teeth?". Ha! We humans are so tough and so vulnerable at the same time, it's fascinating.

Here’s a story : Got it really bad once whilst on holiday in Tunisia … came home and saw a GP who prescribed me the antibiotic Ciproxin, which I turned out to be severely allergic to! Was in A&E within a few hours with anaphylaxis, thought I was going to die. Cured my diarrhoea though -must’ve been all the antihistamine they drip fed me with ! Keep up the good work Dr Gill 👍

Thank you for the very informative video, Dr. Gill. As a person who grew up in China, I remember the doctors in China had always prescribed a medicine called 'Berberine' when someone has diarrhoea, which, in my memory, it always worked with me. However, later on when I moved to Europe, I've find out that the doctors here don't consider it as a medicine. And when I searched the word 'Berberine' in English, most of the information links it to better heart condition, or good for your blood sugar level. What is your opinion on this 'berberine'? Do you believe it have certain effectiveness against diarrhoea? Or the doctors in China are just crazy? Thank you very much.

I’ve honestly not heard of it. But that’s doesn’t mean there is no benefit, there are many foods / supplements that give a small benefit but not taken as a prescription medication - for example omega 3 But I’d always express caution if a patient wanted to use something like that to treat as condition we would normally provide specific medications for

after a regiment of antibiotic treatment for diarrhea is it wise to follow up with probiotics or should they be started simultaneously
@TheNuvish2 жыл бұрын
also use of anti secretory medications like racecadotril do they have role in severe diarrhea
@DrJamesGill2 жыл бұрын
Starting simultaneously will do nothing. The antibiotic will also kill anything in the probiotic. There MAY be some benefit to starting the probiotic after diarrhoea. But look at it the other way, if you can afford it, like the taste and don’t have any contraindications - there is no HARM, so may as well 😊

I like the comments. As a frequent traveler, but only with a pre-med level of training. Also its always better to see a doctor if you can. I do recommend activated charcoal to help with gas and diarrhea. Obviously you can't take it with other medicines, but it has helped me several times since a doctor first prescribed it. My family often carries a few amoebacides when in developing areas where the water is suspect. They are not fun and burn in the system but do work often. Last time, I couldn't because of a flight schedule. Thankfully things cleared up before the longest flights. An interesting note is I have a mild difficulty digesting corn. Its become an occasional problem as an American as there is corn sugar or starch in almost everything. I do fine if I have some in my diet consistently, but I react like a lactose intolerant person does to dairy if I eat more than trace amounts after a month in an area where refined maize ingredients are less common. One time in 2015 my bowels were so upset they refused to move for three weeks. My biggest risk areas are often recently cleaned restaurant dishes and showers. Its not uncommon to get water in your mouth during the later. In the former, it only takes one microliter drop of contaminated rinse water to cause issues. Its impossible to know. You can check the dishes you use, but what about the dishes food is brought on? It can also be wise to avoid mist coolers for similar reasons. People tend to use tap water for those.
