There is another immense question besides the question of how life got started, and it is the question of how life was automatically programmed to reproduce itself. Coming alive from non-life is inexplicable enough, but such an 'original' specimen of life would have no capability to reproduce because that is not necessary in order to be alive. Any 'original' life would naturally be sterile and incapable of reproducing. So what are the odds that both life and reproduction capability spontaneously appeared together simultaneously? The answer of course is 'zero'.

You are putting the cart before the horse. The building blocks of life were gatherd bit by bit, then they became a cell. Cells were essentially reproducing before they were what we would call cells or alive. So no necessity to spontaneously appear simultaneously. So what have you learned from a Tour class? The answer of course is zero.

@@kevinkelly2162 does that really make sense to you? So, if I understand you correctly, you are saying that non-living things reproduced themselves for no apparent reason (because it wasn't for the purpose of life) until one day just the right combination evolved that was zapped by an electrical charge (which is sheer speculation as it is), and suddenly there were living cells that also happened to reproduce from the get-go. All without any guide or purpose. And then you want to say you don't have faith, but rely solely on science. Yeah, right.

I was watching a NOVA program on PBS discussing origin of life. An expert came on to explain the science behind origin of life, and I mentally braced myself to hear the primordial soup paradigm. Surprisingly, however, he basically said (I'm paraphrasing) that life is extremely complex, and how life first began is still a mystery. We don't know. I thought, 'Wow. Dr. Tour imaking is making a difference.'

OoL scientists don't even pay attention to Jim Tour. There are several hypotheses out there concerning OoL but none have definitive proof. Therefore those scientists state that they don't know ... but they're working on it. And since there's no deadline on doing research and science ... so what if they don't know, yet? Not having an explanation for how life originated doesn't make one can dump 'god' in that gap. This asserted superstitious thing is just a 3 letter word, it doesn't explain a thing and brings us no closer to understanding OoL. Tour is only making a difference to his gullible superstitious audience.

Thanks for that. I've had those sorts of effects myself in campaigns I do, which is gratifying, and you don't have to be a grifter to do it. Tour is the real deal. Dave is going be on a such an emotional let down. We should pray for him. He is kicking the goads, because he knows the science doest really support him. I seen an interview with Jim, where the interviewer mentioned he has been unfortunate to get into a few debates online about this, and if you question OOL, it seems to be surrounded by a body guard of extreme people that try to beat you down, which you see here. We booth have those sorts of people, but not on line so much on our side, and it's simply bad form to act like Dave, or even me, in Christianity. The break in reality in thinking of some is palpable. I had one guy (and a lot of these guys seem rather reasonable intelligent people, but people with ability to believe and disbelieve, rather than prove that much) and in stunned disbelief I found the guy was a flat earther. So, I gently have him done straightforwards physical based examples he should be able to see, and he couldn't. Dave reminds me a bit if that, except he has a bent in it with attitude. I mean this guy mentioned he could see the same stars in both hemispheres, and that should be impossible. Obviously he heard somebody say that, and no actual Christian scientist should say that, but their are non-Christian trolls out there, seeing wifi thru can bait. I physically illustrated his from a sphere, you can see both sets of distant stars, while closer to the poles some will be invisible. He couldn't see that. Perplexing, but this happens with belief in bad science a lot, and they call themselves Skeptics. Lol. It is just they tend to fall for higher and higher level deceptions, the more they know, and the more ability they have. At Tours level, he would have to be in the Matrix or something to be fooled like that. Dave, might even say something like "I am the Matrix" to be radically edgy. Where, Tour would not say that. There lays a problem.

I have a BS in both CHEMISTRY and PHYSICS and I completed my PhD coursework in Physics at Purdue University. I tool two years of Organic Chemistry and a year of BIOCHEMISTRY, and I got a minor in BIOLOGY. I understand enough Biology and BIOCHEMISTRY to fully appreciate the basic complex Chemistry of life. Further, I now teach all the high school Sciences at a Private high school and I have watched all the excellent Science videos on the recent Biology advances. Current research has revealed the vast complexities of the thousands of protiens required to sustain life and the newly discovered steeper motor protiens that error check DNA replication and they transport various nutrients around the Cell. I have also studied Cell membranes and they are fantastically complex gate keepers in the Cell! Life is definitely not so simple to have been created by random natural means. The Primordial Soup model is complete and utter nonsense and the complexity of even the most simplest Cells could never have started by any random action.

@Sam Burns Go see Professor Dave.... He's 1000% convinced Miller Urey experiment proves the Primordial Soup model. Read the textbooks also, every Biology book in the USA has ABIOGENENESIS as the beginning of life as a "simple" one celled life form and everything on Earth magically preceded from this event. The probability of the simplest ONE CELLED organism being created from simple ammonia, carbon Dioxide, and simple sulfur compounds in water is completely rediculous and not remotely possible. It's comical they still print this nonsense in high school biology textbooks!! The Miller-Urey experiment yields 2 or 3 of the simplest amino acids and they cannot account for the other 17 required to make even the simplest polypeptide precursor to a protien. The reality is this simple polypeptide won't last more than a day or two at best since breakdown occurs very rapidly! Most intelligent people TODAY that actually look at the Science don't believe in ABIOGENENESIS. You have two choices, life was seeded on the Planet by Aliens, or you just wave the flag and give credit to God!

Your particular answer to this question is, scientists, NOT science. Which makes scientists your elohim. Scientists discover physical components of the universe, they can’t tell you why it’s there. They are only capable of telling you that it’s there. This doesn’t form an equation for the existence or non existence of God. Your thoughts aren’t physical. Your only link to the natural world is your body, but your mind (psyche) is not of this world. Science can’t go there. Sounds nuts? So, here is honesty from your guy… “I don’t like God because he interferes with my sex life”… hats off to him because that’s exactly the answer to the atheistic problem. What is even more problematic is the action of the 2nd law of thermodynamics, in which the deterioration of the constructs that are proposed begins immediately and pressures any construct back to the chaos from which the organized chemical agents are proposed to have formed. The pressure isn't to become more organized, the pressure is to become less organized. In any instance proposed the pressure is towards chaos rather than toward organization. Evolution is one of the most religious philosophies around with the faith needed to believe in their theory is far more than intelligent design.

Totally agree re: abiogenesis. Factual science begins with the ability to observe something and repeat it over and over and get the same results. Evolution is fake science. It cannot be observed and repeated. Natural observations and some science are involved but there is no scientific proof of the big bong nor evolution. The big fizzle elements keep getting smaller and smaller, even ghostly, but still no answer from evols on where any of it, no matter how small, or the "juice" needed to start it, came from. I'm looking for actual working scientists to move away from the big noise, in fact several already are, as it is unsatisfactory and untenable. They'll leave the trolls in the dust for awhile til they catch up. But, I'm pretty sure we'll soon be hearing of a new notion as to origins while they try to take another stab at it. Origins is something that science shouldn't be trying to solve anyway bc it isn't falsifiable and nobody has seen it. Nor ever will. Even if they claim a race of aliens have been contacted who claim they started life on earth, we are still left with the question, where and how did it all start? By pushing the date further and further back until the sheer number of years dazzles the mind, the masses are distracted.

I thank you so much my brother in Christ Dr. James Tour. I had ALWAYS believed that the scientific literature behind evolution and the origin of life was intellectually sound, somehow maybe even more so than the creation account. Oh boy oh boy couldn't I have been more utterly wrong. That "time is the enemy" statement is the true game changer for me in my faith in Christ. It completely demolished any regard for the thoughts of "maybe, just maybe, after a certain amount of time that life would eventually form" in my head and how fallible those thoughts really were. They really held no water. Rather than that, the sheer perfection and historicity of the Bible and how morally, intellectually, and logically perfect it is. It is by no means the creation of man, but the Word of God. Lastly, the biggest argument FOR God isn't even the creation account or the Flood, but rather the resurrection of Jesus Christ Himself and His life. He shakes up the entirety of human existence on His own. Praise be to God for people like you Dr. James. God bless

The point is this; 1) Tour claims he has published on this subject. He has not. It's a lie he tells in lectures. 2) He claims he has shown that it is not possible but a) his claims have been shown to be false and b) he's still using an argument from ignorance fallacy. It's also worth noting that Tour says he can't believe in a natural abiogenesis because he is a scientist and the case for it isn't sufficiently robust. OK. But he does believe an invisible wizard proofed life into existance from nothing by litteral magic because it says so in an anonymous ironage book. Do you spot the double standard? If you take a look at his website, all becomes quite clear. His religious belief takes precedent over scientific evidence. From Tour’s website: “Based upon my faith in the biblical text, I do believe that God created the heavens and the earth and all that dwell therein, including a man named Adam and a woman named Eve. As for many of the details and the time-spans, I personally become less clear. Some may ask, What’s “less clear” about the text that reads, “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth”? That is a fair question, and I wish I had an answer that would satisfy them. But I do not because I remain less clear. So, in addition to my chemically based scientific resistance to a macroevolutionary proposal, I am also theologically reticent to embrace it." Jim Tour is not a scientist, he's a preacher disguised as a scientist.

@@derhafi No. Once again you misrepresent the facts and figures. Even the smallest conceived protein must come together originally from building blocks. Not only must a protein self-assemble, but it has to be a useful one. No single protein does every job of a cell so which one formed first? The whole thing makes the chicken and the egg a simpleton's riddle. How about that Ewert paper, read that yet? No, you "know without reading" that it's wrong. Why not just say "my bias informs my knowledge"? Observation tells us that proteins cannot tolerate compounding changes in amino acids. Single point changes are typically neutral, but compounded changes disrupt function. What evidence do you use to support your (inferred) claim that there are many ways to assemble a protein with the same function? Here's one for you. You have never, not in any of these comments, been able to argue a single point without rhetoric. You've trolled Dr. Tour's channel for months and not one of your comments is truly informed. Just sayin'

@@derhafi A protein that did something?? Really? What was that something? A protein that just happens that also does something. Something that can't even be imagined because no imaginary single protein can accomplish anything. Proteins don't just duplicate, they don't do anything without a cell. Even the narrative is so incomplete that it's inconceivable. You really need to read Ewerts paper, you don't even understand what was calculated. You're arguing against something that you've completely misrepresented. You have the entire premise of the paper wrong. Abiogenesis is not the only game in town. Claims on this matter in either direction are metaphysical and not science. You're supporting your science with theology, exactly what you accuse Tour of doing. Not surprised, but always amazed to see it in action. The cognitive dissonance you must endure.

@@Gek1177 Calm down pumpkin. Tour is a highly qualified scientist not afraid to call out the junk science that these origin of life scientists are trying to peddle. The disgrace is them avoiding Tour’s scientific critique and resorting to misrepresentation and ad hominem attacks. If that makes them and yourself uncomfortable, then that sounds more like a personal problem rooted in a threat to your materialistic ideology.

(On the living cell being a factory) Not only is it a mere factory, it is a self-replicating and self-deploying factory.
