I have 37 years of sobriety; I find that all 12 step programs are microcosms of society at large. No group in any part of society I have experienced, has been immune to a segment of that group being in the shadows. Navigating through these shadows is part of life in the world. I am very happy you found your comfort zone, but remember, we do not live in a well baby clinic, and every segment is vulnerable. I appreciate your perspective and thanks for sharing.
@DRKJFOSTER

Yes, I agree. I've said this myself. It is a microcosm of society at large, yet you're going to find a high concentration of individuals with various levels of significant mental health disorders. This is where it differs from society at large, unless of course you live in an area where there is a high concentration of mental health issues, like Kensington Beach.

I love how you connected rationalizing our alcoholic behavior and insanity/sanity. Often I think we only relate the insanity to the inability to stop drinking. I also agree some of this comes to us as we work 4-11. I am 4 years sober, 2 years off tobacco. Thank you for your service.

@DRKJFOSTER All you are doing is going in circles. We become reliant on a higher power and meetings are for us to carry the message to a newcomer. Fellowship is a beautiful bonus we get from AA, not the purpose of AA
@Me-jf6hk
@Me-jf6hk 3 ай бұрын
@@roberthimselfisblankslate1862 It's not the purpose but it is part of it, it's part of the three parts of the program, it's part of unity. Unity service and recovery. Many think just attending meetings is AA, it's not plus the only requirement for attendance is a desire to stop drinking but it's not what is required to get sober. I couldn't listen to this because from the start this lady is pushing her concept of a higher power by the symbols and statues in the background, a big no no in the AA program. I've no problem myself with her concept but it shouldn't be in the video for others to be confused over.

The first step is all of the steps. AA is for people who cannot stay stopped on their own willpower. So we have to change our design for living. If we don't fully emerse ourselves we're good for a while, but not permanently change our attitude and outlook on life and our alcoholic thinking will get us drunk again. Unmanageablity is only fixed by allowing a higher power to manage our lives. If you don't have a higher power try holding your breath for 1 hour. Can't do that? Me neither so I have a higher power that loves me enough to keep my breathing going without me even trying.

Respectfully I disagree with your interpretation of a higher power being other humans in our AA group. I enjoyed your talk on step 10, and I thought I'd check out your talks on Steps 2 and 3. My comments are from The Big Book and the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. AA is a Spiritual Solution. Your concept of a higher power being the group of other humans in AA, or any other humans, is misleading, and is not a Spiritual Solution. Your take is Psychology, and something other than Steps 2 and 3. Of course the group and other humans are there for us, and hopefully we are there for them. But that is not, and will never be a Spiritual Solution. And based on the diminishing results in AA, as it has morphed into group therapy, and not about working the 12 steps, Psychology is not effective. I like and respect everything about you, but I disagree with your take on what a higher power is, and how to apply Steps 2 and 3. I won't comment on how to do 2 and 3, as its all in writing in the Big Book. Thanks for allowing me to comment.

Hi Garrison - Thank you for sharing your thoughts, experience and opinion relative to the concept of a Higher Power. You have a right to your opinions and beliefs regarding spirituality. Beliefs are what makes spirituality so personal. Spirituality is comprised of beliefs, practices and experiences. I agree that the solution to addiction is a spiritual one, but it's not black and white, due to varied beliefs relative to spirituality. I believe that it is easier for people to develop their own concept of a Higher Power when I am not trying to impose my belief system on someone else. Everyone has a right to their own beliefs. I happen to be someone who believes that you don't even have to believe in God to get sober. What I am trying to convey in Step 2 is to help those who have had negative experiences with religion and have negative connotations associated with God or even the concept of a Higher Power. I do believe that two people coming together to help each other is the cornerstone of 12 Step recovery. One alcoholic helping another (ie Bill and Bob) and that relationship was more powerful than each of them trying to stay sober on their own. A group is even more powerful than one person or even two people. The fact that you disagree does not insult me one bit. Again, you have a right to your opinion. My only suggestion is not to try to impose it on others as their truth. I apologize if you felt I was doing this in my video as it was not my intent. I hope you have a blessed day.

This is not the true description of step 2 the power is not the group or the meetings the power doesn't come in step 2 steps 1.2.3 are not working steps they are accepting steps you dou only need willingness for these steps. How dare you say praying won't work the purpose of the 12vsteps is for you to find God call it what you want but it's God in every name

How dare I? I believe you misunderstand. My point is that if you are recovering from addiction (a brain disease that impacts your thinking) and you sit home and pray, all by yourself, your intuit thinking will be that of an insane person. God will not be God in that conversation. To just think that you can sit home and pray your addiction away is ludicrous in and of itself. And... it also sounds like you are someone who believes the God of YOUR understanding is the one and only God. Hmmm... that sounds nothing like an Open-Mind in HOW it works Honesty, OPEN-MINDEDNESS and Willingess nor does it sound anything like what the 12 Steps are about!! Dare, I? Yes, I dare say I will....it's my channel, my experience, and my opinion. And furthermore, I'm entitled to believe whatever I choose regarding the God of MY understanding. Please stop imposing what you believe about God onto others. Btw.. You're welcome to create your own channel, with your own videos, and espouse your my God is the only God propoganda. Be my guest. Let me know how that goes for you.

Please be very very careful about your message. Obliterating the power of God over and against the power of the people. Ps. The insanity is my stinking thinking when I am sober. It is not my state of mind when drinking

Your thinking is your mind, and you can't discount that substance use disorders are considered a brain disease because of they way it chemically impacts the brain, which results in distorted thinking. I need to rely of others to help begin the rewiring of my brain. Spirituality is not in and of itself religion and vice versa.

This person has never worked the steps and isn’t a member of AA 😂 please look up the Joe and Charlie tapes for Step 2 guidance if you’re a real alcoholic. This video is not for real alcoholics.

A group was never meant to take the place of a Higher Power as much as the church people could take the place of Jesus

That would depend on the person. There are many people who get and stay sober without a belief in Jesus or God.

You don't need to believe in God to do the Steps or to be able to recover. You don't even need to believe in God to practice spirituality.
