Interesting topic! If you look at the 4-note patterns alone, there are 35 different patterns out of 7 notes (not to mention the combinations of notes in each 4-note pattern). It's good to keep in mind that when you seem to play the same ideas over and over again!

100% agree - there's so much you can do with little cells and am surprised that AI wouldn't generate something with more mixture. But, like I said in the video, I think the better questions you ask the better the output.

I feel like they're all good phrases, because it's very good, both rhythmically and articulation-wise. I think a course to learn how to better rhythm my jazz improvisation phrases would really help me!

Everything, IMO, starts with rhythm. You can have all the 'right' note choices, but if you put it with a lackluster rhythm it just doesn't hit. The opposite is true too. You can have a just ok group of note choices, but put it with a solid rhythm and you've got something good!

Hey Jason, This is an interesting exercise in the relative limitations in AI and how we carbon-based life forms have to interpret the "raw data" to optimize the musical value of the AI output. One more thing, I like the inclusion of the "flattened 3rd" into the major pentatonic scale.....a slightly different animal than the formal minor pentatonic scale. 👍

Thanks Lou. AI will only get better as the inputs get better so it's interesting to see what might happen. I'm also a BIG fan of using the flat 3 on the major pentatonic. I teach that to beginner students to use rather than the blues scale. It also has a big upside for other applications as they get more fluid with it.

I liked those original patterns better too. GPT did make them all ascending even after giving it multiple prompts in an attempt to get it to “learn” what I was asking. As I mentioned towards the end of the video; the better we get at asking it questions/prompts the better its responses might be. Either way, an interesting experiment to see how it might assist us on our quest to be better improvisers.

Well they sounded OK though all were just simple ascending lines. You might get more interesting results with just a random number generator to find you permutations of the pentatonic scale. It was interesting that ChatGPT chose some notes that weren't even in the scale.

Granted this was from quite a while ago (considering how fast A.I. makes updates, changes and improvements). It's very possible that if we were to run the same prompt...or a more comprehensive prompt, that it might give us a different outcome now.

Very interesting Jason - funny, but I think AI really doesn't pass the legendary "Turing Test". Still, in my songwriting mode, I thought I'd give it a shot - maybe something funny would pop up, but no. I've had more luck with refrigerator magnet poetry.

Like with any tech when applied to creative arts - I believe it still needs a human to prompt it correctly for it to be beneficial. I find myself using AI for productivity and not much else at this point.

Hi Raul, the benefit of learning patterns by numbers is that you can apply it to any key/scale of your choice. It also gets you thinking about music from a different context which is helpful in broadening your decision making in improvisation.

Pick a scale and apply the numbers. For instance, in this video I was using D Major Pentatonic: 1 = D, 2 = E, 3 = F#, 5 = A, 6 = B, 8 = D (octave above).

I don't like computer generated patterns. There is way too much of this nowadays. The greatest musicians in history never used them. They did it the traditional way, which is also good enough for me.

I'm not necessarily a fan of them either. The purpose of this video was to see what AI would come up with. You use what works for you. For someone else, they may find something completely different of value to them. Both are valid.
