I'm a new bulldog owner and all I can say is I spent $4000 on my English bulldog and I could not be happier. That little guy is so full of love and has such a wonderful personality its difficult to describe. If you want a bulldog you should definitely get one. In my opinion they are on kinda of a different level so to speak with their love and personality compared to other breeds. There is just something magical about them and if you've never been around one your missing out.

@@cassysamel3914 Some bulldogs are not "perfect" and can be gotten cheaper. Our son's dog has a longer nose.They actually rescued him from the breeder next door who couldn't sell him and he was neglected and cried and cried till my daughter in law went over and got him. I don't actually know how much money they paid but it was a lot less. He is a great guy, sweet, but a whiner, lets you know his needs very clearly!

@@cassysamel3914 My family's experience has been wonderful so far. It took a little time to get his diet sorted out because some chicken based foods made him itchy so we switched to a salmon based food and he seems better but any dog can be sensitive to what they eat. Henry has so far been an exceptional addition to the family and everyone adores and spoils him rotten. He is still only about 16 months old and has plenty of puppy energy. He loves little walks at the park car rides cuddling on the couch or in bed. He will actually watch TV sometimes and is just a super cool dog. We give him tons of attention and he is free to roam the house. We tried crating because it sounded like a common thing but he did not respond well to it. He just wants to be with his family and wants to be with you and eat what your eating. I could go on and on about how great he is and if you have any specific questions I'd love to answer them. But on the flip side its not without some work. Bulldogs are big shedders and his hair is a constant clean up battle. Also they are extremely sensitive to hot temperatures and do not do well with heat. Last summer my dog knew where every a.c. vent in the house was and would find one and lay on top of it. So if you live somewhere warm they need air conditioning for sure. Also bulldogs have a tail pocket and that requires maintenance as well as his wrinkles and ears. He has been to the vet multiple times just for vaccines and check ups and if you haven't realized (like me) getting a vet appointment nowadays is alot more difficult than it was years ago for whatever reason. Well at least in my area. But if you want an English bulldog id say get one. Its kinda like having a new baby/ toddler around the house again. Only funner! 😄 One last side note they eat EVERYTHING and that is one of my biggest concerns for his health. Im afraid one day he will eat something he shouldn't and cause him some major problems. He seems to be getting a little better about eating stuff he finds but its still something you have to constantly watch for.

I think the association of Bulldogs and huge vet bills is greatly overblown. My guy had a lung infection from the one time I boarded him that produced a bill in the $500 range I blame myself for not boarding him with a vet. He has allergies mainly affecting his skin and ears. The meds I give him cost about $2 a day. But if Benedryl worked for him I could buy a bottle of 1000 for less than $20 and it would last almost 3 years.his vet gave me a paper listing types of antihistamines that I could buy OTC at Costco or Amazon for Pennys a day. Bullies are expensive to buy because they are delivered Caesarean by a vet, but aside from the initial cost, they may be a little more expensive than a random breed, excepting those with skeletal and hip displacement issues, but it’s not that high.

@@rosieyang713 some can bark a lot. Depends on how you bring it up. I don’t cage my dogs, never have. Leaving a puppy alone all day isn’t a great idea, puppies red to go outside a lot. Bulldogs are extremely stubborn. When buying a bulldog you want to make sure the parents are health tested and CLEARED. you want to go to the breeders home and see the conditions of the parents ( if they own the male as well ) you never want to send money over the internet until you see the pups and know that it’s not a scam. There is a a lot of scams in the bulldog world. These are expensive dogs for many reasons, I highly recommend you do some research on the breed and know their daily care and to know why they are so expensive. When a breeder welps a litter 3+ weeks of their life is spent at home caring for those puppies as the mother would. Supplies are needed, heating lamp or heating pad, sometimes oxygen machines. I can honestly go on and on about this breed. I highly recommend buying from a GOOD breeder. Quality isn’t cheap and cheap isn’t quality. You buy a cheap bulldog you will makeup for it at the vet with health issues, I have seen it. the whole they are all unhealthy is a myth. This breed is expensive to buy and expensive to maintain. Today I was driving around a shopping center next to a Costco in order to deposit a check I got in the mail, routine stuff. As I pulled out of the drive thru ATM I noticed the local fire Dept was undertaking an exercise with their biggest ladder trucks and a few rescue vehicles and ambulances thrown in. I was with Willy my 100 lb English Bulldog and as we were trying to leave the area without getting in the fire departments way, a fireman tapped on my window asking if he could look at my Bullie. Before we got out of there all the fireman had to pet Willy the group asked if I would let them take a picture including Willy, which I did. Last week I took the dog into Home Depot as it was 116 degrees and I was not going to leave him in the car even with the air on. Little kids who were with moms or dads squealed running up to hug Willy and fuss over him. He loves it, he’s never barked or growled at anyone, a very gentle dog. This was repeated as we left one aisle going down another one. People just go crazy to see a Bulldog, it’s not a dog people fear in the least. Aside from the unique health issues, the comfort people have around this dog they have never seen before amazes me. No he doesn’t leave a #1 or #2 to mark his having been there.

Same for males... had terrible issues w/ spayed males together. Had no problem w/ keeping opposite sexes, i.e. Female w/ Male. Daily cleaning maintenance of face folds and paws (in-between the toes and under the pads). And weekly ear cleanings. I use non-scented baby wipes, and then dry everything off with cotton balls. And if anything ever looks red or smells a bit off I use chlorhexidine wipes instead of baby wipes and then dry properly with cotton balls. I've found that the end goal should be very clean but also very dry. Moisture is what creates the bacteria/fungus to grow. :-)

DONT bathe the dog that frequently it washes away the skin oils that help fight off infections and protects the skin. If the dog has allergic hives on its belly skin, bathing with coiladial (sp?) oat meal baths helps otherwise a bath every 30-60 days should be enough.

i assume you have already gotten your dog, 😌i have a few questions if you dont mind me asking. it would really mean a lot if you would maybe answer atleast some 😌does your bulldog bark a lot(especially during the night)? do you think a cage is necessary? would the dog be fine if i leave it home alone for a full day? are they overall easy to train? and is there anything you think i should know before getting a bulldog? (btw all these questions are specifically for bulldogs)im trying to persuade my parents into getting one 😔

Clean/dry their jowls after they eat or drink. Also, use special wrinkle wipes everyday then their skin should be just fine. The bully’s in this video do look healthy, but they are overweight. People often think English Bulldogs are supposed to be fat & chunky. That’s not the case! It’s good to see a little bit of their rib cage. Best dog anyone could ask for!!!

@@rosieyang713 my Frenchie only barks when she hears things at night such as people walking but that’s her defense mechanism because she’s really overprotective. It depends on how you raise a dog and it’s mental condition, if you think a cage is necessary then of course use a cage if you don’t like pets sleeping on your bed. The reason mine doesn’t sleep in a cage is because she has separation anxiety if she isn’t with someone she will start having panic attacks, pee and poop and starts shaking and shutting down but you know every dog is different.

You're describing all the typical health issues bad breeding produces. If people stopped buying from backyard breeders, and only bought from breeders that health test, and are concerned about betterment, then most of the health issues don't exist. Regarding the skin folds- keeping them clean and dry prevents yeast and bacteria from forming. If people knew how to properly clean and dry the wrinkle folds, you wouldn't see infections.

I love English Bulldogs, I want one so bad. But, I'd rather save up for a little and go through the AKC to find a reputable breeder. I know it'll cost more, but I don't want to support puppy mills. Unfortunately, since this is such a popular breed, there's a ton of improper breeding going on.

It’s very hard to find a good breeder. It took a year to find a breeder and it was worth the time and effort! My Oscar is 11 and for the first 9 years, he would get an infection every couple of years. Now, it’s every 6 months and $1100 extra year just like she said. 😊 He’s old and I dont think he’s not gonna be around much longer. I want another English Bulldog but Oscar is the best dog I’ve ever had! He’s irreplaceable, my whole entire family adores him. 😔

Is it normal for bulldogs to get super excited to go to the vet? My bulldog gets extremely excited to see the vet and our vet says the same about her other bulldog patients!
@drlindsaybutzer4 жыл бұрын
Yes! they are so happy to see the vet and just all around goofy happy dogs. if they are too excited you can give them some melatonin 5 mg before going in to help calm them down, ask your vet first to see what she says! I hope this helps.

I spend about $375/month just to feed mine! Hills Science Diet z/d prescription. More than I spend on my own food. My Bubba is about 45-50lbs which is relatively small for a male. He used to be almost 60lbs panting all the time so my vet put him on a diet now he doesn’t pant nearly as much. Also they have a short esophagus my dog has bilious vomiting syndrome but now with antacid and probiotics he’s much better

Question? Is it because they were unnaturally inbreeded years ago and this created genetic deformities? Almost seems cruel to breed them
@drlindsaybutzer4 жыл бұрын
This is a very opinionated topic. A lot of people love this breed.. the older generations had less problems as they were bred to be smaller and smaller and the face more smooshed with more and more wrinkles we saw more issues. I hope this helped. people now like smaller dogs I guess.

What kind of vet work and care should I be on top of in order for my bulldog to look good and feel good?
@feebaby3 жыл бұрын
The best work is at home. Clean their folds everyday, at least once. My Oscar has allergies so sometimes I clean his face 5-6 times a day. Sometimes his back gets itchy, so I have medicated shampoo and wipes. Stay on top of vet appointments! Be prepared to spend more than expected when you pick them up! It’s always something wrong but don’t take anything lightly! The cleaner you keep them, the better! I’m not sure about everyone else’s but mines need a couple of different surfaces to lay on. A pillow, a blanket and the hardwood floor. He alternates all day. 😊 They can accumulate a lot of hair so I would suggest hardwood floors and leather furniture. It’s an easier cleanup and help prevent dog hair accumulating everywhere in your home.

I’m a bulldogs owner and i’d like give my tip: don’t have your bulldog breath so fast like the 2 in the video, they are overheated, it’s extremely dangerous for them. I never comment, but i felt anxious the whole video watching those 2 breathing that fast.
@drlindsaybutzer4 жыл бұрын
La Barbie My mom said the same thing! I’m sorry they made you anxious .. they always breath like that when I see them , they get super excited, and we had plenty of water and in cold AC environment. If I could tell them to calm down I would but they just get so excited and want to play.

Also, more time than not, eventually Bulldogs need nare surgery & laser shortening palate surgery to help w/ breathing. Frenchies the same for most part. However, find Frenchies a little healthier than Bulldogs. Plus, cherry eye issues but entropian eye issues a lot times. I haven't had Bulldogs or Frenchies since 2010 when health care cost still reasonable... My veterinarian did entropian surgery, nare surgery, and palate surgery for $1000.00. Luckily, BCA is pushing for breeding healthier lines, and with research can find healthier Bullies. Currently, can't even afford a healthier line for akc exhibitions, and can't justify spending $3800 to $6, 000 for a dog when so many dogs in rescue.... Pet insurance highly recommended for this breed....

While and still watching I have a qeustion about the breeding.. If a bulldog needs a c-section every litter how many litters may a bitch have? I would think after X many c-sections it would be advised the dog retire. For whatever reason I can see it being hard having more than a couple litters on the bitch, due to always needing a c-section.
@drlindsaybutzer5 жыл бұрын
That is very true. Most breeders will only breed a dog that needs a C-section 3 x and then retire that dog from breeding.
