Amazing performance! Totally captivating. He is so... fearless there, alone, with the keyboard. Taking all the time in the world he wants. Not afraid to be so open and vulnerable. Thank you, Mark! I will watch more of Ha Chenyu's performances, definitely. I wish I understood the lyrics here.

If you appreciate artists that break the boundaries in music, Hua Chenyu is your artist. He mentioned many times that his teacher was not approving of his way of singing, especially his unorthodox placement. Hua Chenyu stated that in order to express and feel the music that he composes, he will sing this way, as he thinks this is suited for his music. Thank you for your reaction, even though I think Hua Chenyu is not quite the artist to be vocal analized as he's much more into the music than singing itself.

To provide a little more detail on Hua. His parents divorced when he was two and he lived with his father, who was an executive who not only worked long hours but was often away on business trips. His father would not speak a word of praise or affection to him the entire time he was growing up. When I say "not a word" I mean not a single word of affection ever. When young Hua would carry a toy gun into bed because he was so scared. He handed him off to nannies to raise and they only communicated when his father checked his grades or asked him if needed anything. Even harder, his father remarried and had a daughter that he doted on even while continuing to ignore Hua. Growing up under such deprivation Hua became anti-social, angry and depressed. He wanted love from someone, anyone, but for a long time despaired of ever receiving it and distanced himself from others to prevent them from rejecting him like he felt his parents had. It was only music, creating his own melodies and lyric-less songs for hours and days on end, that enabled him to cope. Hua found it painful to prepare for this performance because the memories of those darker times kept coming back. The producers did not want him to perform the song. Hua himself thought there was a real chance that the audience would not accept it but he wanted to share his struggle in hopes that people might reach out to others who were in need. At the end of the episode, Hua's performance took second place. There is a happy ending to this. His father opened up once when Hua was a teen to admit that he ignored him so that Hua would make his decisions for his life completely on his own, without worrying about what anyone else thought. When Hua came to fame as part of the Superboy competition his father appeared on an episode to support Hua. He admitted all of what I've written but said that he now wanted everyone to know that Hua was his pride. Hua said that hearing those words were far more important than winning the competition. He dedicated that night's performance of "I Will Always Love You" to his father, ending it with "Papa, I love you."

Loved your reaction! He is totally incredible talented. He release these sounds mentally out. He created this strange sounds locking hisself up for months. His parents got divorced since small and his dad left him often alone home to make money. He got scared and thought monsters will showing up eating him. He had no friends and suffer mentality his whole childhood. There was no one he could communicate. He was very quiet person and seldom talks with people. These screaming sounds he created it by locking himself up for months inside home. The way he released these negatives feelings into music is a great Therapy . In 2013 few yrs ago he won a singing contest (super boy) champion singing this sounds and started to feel happy with his life and gets loves by his fans every time on stage. He is a Legend now in China because he composed and changed the normal Chinese music and bring it to another level. When he is composing music he don’t sleep or eat until it has been done. I have just seen another incredible art performance of him: the song called : cancer

One thing he does in this song that I don't remember ever hearing before happens at 5:12 and 5:17 of this video. He seems to transition between octaves so smoothly that there is no yodel or abrupt break when he switches. It almost sounds like for an instant he is singing in both octaves as he switches to the lower one. I don't think I've heard that before. There used to be a pre-stage interview he gave about the emotions of this song on the " Hua Chenyu eng sub" channel ( which you may find useful ), but it doesn't seem to be there anymore.

Thank you, thank you for your reaction and analysis. Hua Chenyu is really a rare all-around singer. Rock and roll, psychedelic rock, rap, ballad, classical music, opera, house music, hip hop, electronic music, experimental music, musical drama elements, R&B, Chinese national opera...... He can always rearrange a song that is not his original and give it a second life, and what is undisputed is that every song he rearranged has his own distinctive style. His high notes can travel through the forest and reach the skies, his low notes are soft and endless like birds singing softly and water flowing downriver. As for some of his original music, I think they are with aesthetic surrealism, such as "Giant Deer", "The Salt of the Earth" and "Arrival". When I heard him say he didn't see himself as a singer, every time he sang, he simply saw himself as an instrument or a tone. He didn't want to be the most prominent one, he just wanted to be immersed togther with the music. From that moment on, I knew that his attitude towards music came from his heart. He was an artist.

He music cannot be put in a box in anyway. HuaHua (his nickname) has said that this song was extremely difficult for him to perform because he had to resurrect the feelings from childhood. The lyrics of the song are about the conflict between the desire to be loved and the fear of opening yourself to vulnerable enough to love you. Knowing what the song is about can also make you appreciate the lighting choices of the production. Hua Chenyu is one of the best actors you will ever see. Check out his performance of Nunchucks... you'll start to see his versatility. BTW, Dimash has his Dears.... Hua Chenyu has his Martians. They will descend. Lol. hello! thank you so much for watching hua chenyu, we appreciated it so much. also, there are few things i would like to address🤗 first of all, to me personally, this video isn’t a good and clever choice to show to a vocal coach/teacher as an introduction but i understand why people would recommend this, we hardly seen a performance close to this x when you said “...this idea of crazy” i smiled, yes, you are indeed very correct. but to him, this is not an idea and exploring anymore. him and ‘craziness’ are very close since he was very young, in fact, he still creates dark music to this days since he’s still pretty much tangled in his dark past. he’s giving a peak of his true self in this performance, and to understand this people had to know the back story on how he did this performance, which you sadly have not seen.. and you are very correct as well when you said he’s communicating and giving out the messages to the audience, which is what he was doing. he’s portraying his younger self as a reminder for parents not to neglect their children. also, I sadly have to disagree when you said hua’s scream is close to not healthy and could’ve done in a healthier way. hua, *sigh* how do I describe him. he’s very unique and versatile. he can do so much with his voice and every angle of his mouth, he values the quality of his voice to perfected his performance that he would not eat for days in order to keep his throat clean. you are also very correct when you said he’s using his voice as an instrument, because he preached the idea. he said that human voices should be an instrument, just like guitars, drums, violins. the most unhealthy screams he did was this one time when he performed ‘scream’ in singer 2018, because his throat was tired (he was overworked by his label) and he was struggling. but in other words, he uses the distortion, ‘growls’ and ‘drive’ a lot and surprisingly, he rarely has a damage by doing so. please react to him more!😊 can you please do a reaction video to Hua Chenyu - Child at Singer 2018 next?🤗

Interesting thoughts. I agree. The voice was another tool here. The performance was very engaging and drew me in. Hua uses his whole body to perform. All this makes him a great and unique artist.

Hua Chenyu is really special and fearless. I feel drained every time I watch certain performances. The audience has to be willing to follow him down the path to get the full experience, and it's so worth it, IMO. My favourite thing about this performance and what he does in general is the raw honesty of the emotion, where whether or not people 'get it' takes a backseat to expressing what needs to be expressed. Something I didn't notice anyone else mention... This song is a cover and his arrangement of Cui Jian's rock song from 1989, IIRC. This version is so haunting, it shocked me when I first heard it and realized what it was. The meaning feels so different in this style and knowing the backstory of where he was coming from with it. (Nunchucks, if you watch that, is also a cover, originally by Jay Chou.)

So great that you've decided to do Hua! Please check out EXO's "Universe" live..or the music video...either is beautiful! Also Hua Chenyu singing "Inflamable explosive" he puts out a real phantom vibe during his performance!! You're 1 of the only coaches that really is attempting to listen before your lecture!😀😀❤❤

Hua Chenyu is awesome. And a better overall singer than what he shows here. This is a great cover song too (the original is good too).. Very, very highly recommend checking out Heaven by Tengger from the same show (Singer). I think you'll really enjoy it. Some awesome vocal control going on.

I love Hua Hua and he is a performance Artist. I really liked your reaction and explanation of Hua’s singing and his performance. Please, please, listen to the 2 songs suggested Child and Ordinary Path. He does take songs and arranges them to his style of singing which he has worked on meticulously since he won Super Boy in 2013 at the age of 23 and every year since then he does 2-3 Mars Concerts. He was called an Alien because he looked different and they said he was from Mars. So a symbol was created and at 24 was doing stadium concerts holding 30-40,000 people (Martians) and his clothes have been part of the Concert. He also works with the staging crew to hemp design the sets which are quite elaborate and again, he has a rocket side and has a classical side to him. He can sing many styles of singing ands he has an etherial song called GIANT DEER that just is so beautiful. He wrote a beautiful song TO MY FUTURE CHILD at 26. The words have a depth to them lacking in many American popular music. He does Chinese Rap but it is different than the USA Rap. I just like his range, that he takes command of 50,000 people and they follow! So, please if you can, check into his other works and I hope you can find time to react. (This years Mars Concerts he wrote 5 new songs, 4 were about depression) Thank you again. 🌸🌸

Ah, wish you had had the chance to watch the pre-performance interview as Hua explains the whole story behind the creation of this song. Without that, not sure one can appreciate this great work of a soul murdered individual deeply. Screaming is the final desperate act.....I found Hua about a month ago. He and Dimash are my 2 fav singers of all time. Very different, both unique, both refer to their voice as instruments not "my voice". GREAT analysis and tips!!! I wish I had met a coach like you when I was trying to be a singer. I was a "natural" could hold notes for ever easily, the longer I sang, the clearer and better my voice sounded. I didn't know how I sang, but it was easy and fee and so fun! A music teacher at Mesa College told me "you have something special, I think if you find a good vocal coach, you could really do something". But the coaches I found made me stand so still and hold my body and head so still and limited my mouth and jaw movement, and told me to breathe in a way that made me feel like I couldn't produce sound or sing up high. I felt so stuck. My free easy flying feeling was gone. The teacher said I was so loud, I wasn't trying to be loud as I sang the Broadway song Kiss Today Goodbye on my audition with her, that I was shaking the walls and she needed to tone me down - her room was about 6 X 6. So it went like that. I didn't trust myself. And then I forgot how I sang naturally which was so easy and free. Now I'm 58 and those dreams are long gone, but I really enjoy listening to greats like Dimash and Hua fulfill their life potential to the fullest, and I always hope that they will continue to fulfill their soul's highest desires :). It is my great joy to know that some peoples dreams and lives work out so wonderfully! :) I'm new subscriber.....best :)

Nice reaction. Hua Hua mentioned that he knows that he is not singing in a way that people regard as technically correct, but he prefers to perform in a way that he believes is beautiful and emotional. His previous teacher forced him to sing in a so called “correct” approach, but he just refused and said, if he has to do so, then probably he will not be that into music anymore. He explained if the way he sings now will sacrifice his career in the long term, then he will quit the job and spend his lifetime in a boat as a fisherman. Yes, he is someone who is very down to earth and easygoing.

Hope you will be able to take a look at it.. Dont have to react, cause I am pretty sure you have a lot of suggestion ... but I suggest to view it. Have a good day!

Thank you so much for your analysis!! Hua Chenyu is one of the most influencial young new artist in China today! He definitely is more interested in the total piece of music than to be the singer of the music. Please react and analyze his song "Dad, I'm home" Which uses a different technique to tell a story. (Not his personal story- but he tells it so well!) I also suggest using the subs in the videos to understand the lyrics, it will add such a dimension to your understanding the song and why he does what he does!!! Thank you so much ! Love your Work!! Also I think you would also find Diana Audinova very interesting! She has a very unusual voice and range for a woman. And most of the songs that are available is from the age of 14.. She just recently turned 16. Thank so much for doing what you're doing!!

OMG! Thank you for not interrupting this incredible performance. This song brings me to tears, but when "reactors" constantly stop it, I simply go nuts. As one stopped this to say, "I like his live performance better." Sure, I liked seeing the Beatles live, too, but that was back then. Anyway, what a fine job you did in this reaction!! Thank you, thank you!

huachenyu once said he knew some of his singing skills or methods were not the ‘standard’ or the ‘right’ way to sing and making sounds. But he said if he could only sing in this way for 20 years or so, he would do it in order to convey what he really want to express. He said he loves music and he want to shine as bright as it could be like a candle, even thou it is burning itself at the same time....

Many artists have pushed these limits imposed on us. David Bowie, Thom York and U2 come to mind immediately. I think he is a rockstar, and one to be watched. Absolutely a stunning artist. Thoroughly entertaining, provocative and love that he sings about hope, truth, love and communicating no matter what. He is a superstar in my eyes.

This is brutally honest. Self only. He cannot love. You could never be allowed to perform something like this here in the west. This Singer show has some of the most interesting and innovative artists. So much talent we miss when money and the sure formula is the bottom line. How free he is. And how rapt is his audience.
