Dr. Atkins’ Diet Revolution was published in 1972. He advocated control of carbohydrate consumption and emphasized both protein and fat as the primary sources of calories. My husband and I have been followers of Dr. Atkins for over 20 years and want to emphasize that he deserves credit for this “new” low carb phenomenon.

How do you know you reversed your insulin sensitivity? Having a low blood sugar and normal A1C does not mean you are insulin sensitive. The only way to tell is to do a glucose tolerance test and if you eat a fat based keto diet that test will likely indicate your are not insulin sensitive. Also, about 30% of the population will get dangerous LDL levels on a fat based keto diet, how is your lipid panel? Check your APO(b) level to get an actual measure of CV risk due to lipo-proteins that carry LDL and triglycerides, those lipo-proteins are the actual cause of CV risk. Since you already lost your weight 3 years ago, what are you doing for weight management?

A lot of people at work have noticed my tremendous weight loss success - having lost 100 lbs (going from 230 lbs to 130 lbs) using a low carbohydrate diet, in conjunction with intermittent fasting. I get approached by so many people at work about it that, after a while, I used to get frustrated having to repeat myself about why the diet is safe and why it is effective. Now I just point people to Dr. Sarah Hallberg's TED Talks presentation on the subject, as a good summation as to the diet's efficacy and safety. While I have read many books and watched innumerable presentations on the keto diet from physicians and researchers, Dr. Hallberg's presentation offers the simplest, most concise, and yet still very cogent case, for doing low carb. Her TED presentation, which specifically focused on type 2 diabetes, is relevant to many people who I work with, who are either full blown type 2 diabetics, or are on the cusp of being so. Thank you Dr. Hyman for giving her your platform so that she can extend her reach.

Sarah Hallberg has spoken about the (misleading) heightened Morning fasting blood glucose reading the keto dieters experience. Morning FBG readings are misleadingly high for keto dieters. I have experience this myself, as a keto dieter. For the last 16 years, my Morning FBG has ranged from 99 to 107. But when I finally got a blood testing kit, and tested myself throughout the day, I found that my AVERAGE NON-morning fasting BG is 79. The Dawn Effect will raise my BG from a middle-of-the-night reading of about 82 up to a "morning" 8:30 or 9:30 am reading of 105, due to healthy fat-adapted insulin resistance. My doctor and I finally did an HbA1c test. It turns out that Sarah Hallberg and I were right: My HbA1c was 5.2%, which is near ideal, when you look at the relative risk ratios. I'm 63 years old, and feel great.

@@fevelasco7119 You can go to a pharmacy and buy a blood test kit, along with testing strips. I like the "Embrace PRO" brand. This tests "plasma" glucose, rather than "blood" glucose, but there's a simple conversion: BG = PG * 0.9. You can look this up and double check.

One thing that really comes out in this video is how robustly effective -- and fast working -- the treatment is for many people. The problem for the public is that it's somewhat inexpensive, and therefor the medical community will prefer to dump billions of dollars of research into "medicines" that are only marginally beneficial, and which make only the slightest dents into the diabetes problem.

Great information. Suggestions The volume is too low And please talk about sympathetic vs parasympathetic nervous system and the relationship to tolerate fats. Based my knowledge Sympathetic is always in alert mode, stress all the time, it can handle only this types of healthy fats avocado, butter, eggs nuts, oils and seeds and few wild caught salmon and sometimes grass Fed ground beef, better with white meat. But parasympathic can handle any type of meat including processed foods. My question is maintenance nutrition and to be realistic with our routine. Which carbs we can add at least 2 days a week? How to do maintenance? Thank you

Thank you so much Dr. Hyman and Dr. Hallberg. I have done it all, including gastric bypass and my blood sugar did normalize, but caught up with me again 5 years later. Before I had done low-carb that helped, but could not lose weight. My A1c went up from 5.2, to 7.1, and now I am researching and listening to anything I can find, and have brought it down to 6.6, so far, still working on it. I am not strict, but have cut back a lot on processed foods, sugar and dairy, breads, etc. Now am trying to eat more good fats, veggies and non starch carbs. Thanks so much and please bring us more info!!!!!! It takes time, but so worth it.

This should be required listening for anyone who is diabetic or prediabetic, or even overweight and insulin resistant. Better yet required for doctors to watch. They do a poor job with late diagnosis, and recommending inaccurate diet interventions. With clients I suspect of being IR/pre/diabetic, I use a simple glucometer to test their postprandial glucose (simulated glucose tolerance test), and often (usually) find they have surprisingly high glucose levels... it is a good tangible way to show people what they are eating is a problem and they need to reconsider their diet.

I've been a fan of Sarah Hallberg since her Ted Talk at Purdue U. many years ago. She addresses the evidence so prominently in her most recent speech on Jul 7, 2018 - Uploaded by Low Carb Down Under. I am a pharmacist, obtaining my CE's and practicing 'evidence based medicine' on information primarily by pharmaceutical companies who have a vested interest in promoting whatever they are selling or national agencies supported by pharmaceutical companies. I am not villainizing the source or the information, just concerned that the information is not from varied sources. You do such a good job when you challenge the 'status quo' . Do you think it is worth looking at well documented case reports done by citizen scientists? I am seeing so many youtube personalities who are experimenting on themselves with nutritional ketosis and sharing results. It would be interesting to critically assess what they do, how they interpret results and determine what motivates them.

I do not agree with the high carb by volume - that’s just confusing. Protein does not turn to sugar - see Dr. Bikman’s latest presentation. Depends on level of insulin resistance. A ketone level is not important as long as there is carb restiction. Ketone level is based on how effective the liver is.

I feel fantastic and have lost 12 pounds But yesterday I went in for my lipid panel blood work and this morning I got my results back and my A1c went from 5.9 to 6.5 and my cholesterol numbers are jacked through the roof 379 . My tryglicerides are way way down though. I want to find out What REAL tests are out there. The inflammation is down the neuropathy is gone, the feeling is coming back to my feet. But according to the blood work they are gonna tell me I'm a kook. I only am eating real whole foods no added chemicals or nitrates am under twenty grams of carbohydrates per day. My HDL is 36mg/dl my LDL is,328mg/dl ; No sweeteners moderate protein more leafy greens and cruciferous veggies. I have an upcoming meeting with a nutritionist and they probably will give me an earful of crap about something I'm doing wrong but Im sure their solution will probably not help me. I'm in a bit of a funk about all of this. I don't trust these tests

Keto is great for those with diabetes or prediabetes, but I have a 5.3 A1C, glucose 92, and am underweight so it's a little different for me. After 3 months of doing keto, my total cholesterol went up 100 points, and my LDL went up 80. My Trigs and HDL are really good so I'm not sure where I go from here.

Try a BLT salad. Yummm. For one person, cook 4 slices of bacon, cut into bite sizes. Slice a cup or two of cabbage thick or thin, as you like, and use this for your 'greens.' Add sliced onions and one ripe, fresh large or medium tomato cut into bite-sized pieces. Season with salt and pepper and add a dollop of sour cream (in lieu of mayo) along with all the drippings from the cooked bacon. Toss it. You could also add chick peas or anything else you want. You could use lettuce instead of (or in addition to) cabbage, but cabbage works great in this salad. It's a meal.

I love Sarah hallbergs info and this is the best education we can give our clients. I’ve done it to my clients and myself and has attained wonderful result. The only bad thing I encountered is that the pharcy is not happy with me now. They even limit my request for test strips. I’m sure Coca Cola and Pepsi is mad at this too.

One doc I watched said both work according to studies, but plant based is not sustainable for long term. I was plant based for 15 months, I followed the McDougall diet. I did feel better after I started plants, but my digestion was terrible. On Keto now almost six months and feel so much better than when I did plant based.

Plant based diet.....translation VEGAN....is not a natural diet for humans. In our 2+ million year history on earth, there has never been a vegan culture. Humans lived as hunters and gatherers for the majority of that time, a diet that consisted of meat and low starch plants and small amounts of fruits like berries. It was a very low sugar, low carb diet. The ketogenic diet if done correctly does include a lot of plants, but low starch ones. In order to reverse diabetes it is necessary to eliminate most sugars and high glycemic carbs. There is a very interesting lecture on KZbin by Loren Cordain, "Origins and Evolution of the Western Diet". You might enjoy it.

I really can't eat a high volume plant-based diet. Part of my large intestine has been removed, and adhesions throughout my intestines imply poor motility. If I eat large volumes, I will obstruct and die. Therefore, keto. Add exercise and small amounts of laxatives commonly used in ice-cream (such as guar gum) and I do just fine.

Another huge issue around 24;00. Doctors are being very well trained in how to prescribe drugs. At the same time they are given no training on how to take patients off drugs. (De-prescribe, titrate down). This is evidently a problem with diabetes patients. It's an even bigger problem with pain patients and mental health patients. The large majority of doctors appear to have no idea how to taper a patient from an opioid or benzodiazepene let alone mood stabilizer or anti-psychotic. Makes sense, they are informed by drug reps that these drugs are safe and non-addictive (physiologically).

Can you speak to the carb intake in Europe? Because they’ve been eating bread and pasta for a long time and don’t have these kind of metabolic issues? Is it possible that the insulin results come from toxic grains and carbs which are more the norm in the states? Just musing here…

Dr. Hyman you know even if it's the biggest portion/quantity of the macros, that non-starchy vegetables are low carb. So it's never a high carb diet and to say that confuses people, keeping carbs under 50 grams is the definition of low carb!! The most important thing to say to understand this lifestyle is a metabolic shift, by getting energy from fat the majority of the time rather than glucose....so no grains or legumes. Better to say high vegetable but still LOW carb diet (under 50 grams), high fat, moderate protein, whole food lifestyle. Most calories are in the fat and the 50 grams of carbs scomes from vegetables.

Just got from the American diabetes Associates website, "Why should you eat less saturated fat? Because saturated fat raises blood cholesterol levels. High blood cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease. People with diabetes are at high risk for heart disease and limiting your saturated fat can help lower your risk of having a heart attack or stroke." "The goal for people with and without diabetes is to eat less than 10% of calories from saturated fat. For most people, eating this is about 20 grams of saturated fat per day. That is not much when you consider just one ounce of cheese can have 8 grams of saturated fat." This is shameful for the association. They are killing the people they are representing. Look at how they are funded. Oh my, drug/ Insulin producing companies.

Atkins 1.0 was very high fat & Dr. Atkins was crucified for this. Atkins 2.0 was very high in fat for 2 weeks & high in protein thereafter. However, he suggested if you start gaining weight go back to the high-fat induction diet. So Dr. Hyman is quite wrong about Atkins's diet. Dr. Atkins was a cardiologist, unlike Dr. Berg who is a Chiropractor.

How does one explain the success some low fat doctors have with their diabetic patients? I don't believe they are having the level of success that doctors like Sarah Hallberg are, but it does make me wonder if there are other factors, maybe elements in the standard American diet, like highly processed vegetable oils, that are also influencing disease rates? Or maybe the low fat "success stories" are mostly anecdotal?

Thank you Steve, Sarah and Mark. Always follow the money. GP's make money from diabetes, Cardiologist make money from heart disease, dietitians make money when people are overweight, the medical system generates great wealth for investors when people eat to much and Insurance companies make huge profits when people are huge, unhappy and unhealthy. The system is so corrupt that big government , big healthcare, big agra and big pharma are working together to both make us fat and cure us from a systemically induced disease which they created and which can be cured from a single dietary change. Eat 20g of carbs/day or less and within 30 days your type II diabetes will be virtually gone 80% of the time. I have had five cardiac events over 20 years, a triple bypass, a stent and four angioplasties and have had type II for over three years. After the last event my cardiac doctors told me there was nothing more they could do. Today, I ride my bicycle 60 min. /day, have lost over 50 lbs in just over 65 days and have dropped 80% of my meds. I no longer take any diabetes meds at all. Doctors are forced to follow an ideological dogma not focused on your health, but the systems wealth. Keto works, but you must be very strict and follow the keto program of a knowledgeable Doctor. I will say this again, keto does work, listen to these Doctors and others, they will save your life and give you back your health. Their advice on youtube has given me back my life at age 60 and I will be eternally grateful. Sarah and Steve are two of the smartest clinician out there and Mark knows keto and this program inside out. Cheers from one happy and grateful follower.
