you know rockstar develops new games in the previous games, they used gta 4 files and re designed it to be gta 5 map and updated its graphics and physiscs

The issue with GTA5 and GTA SA is because they tried to make the game very lively but because of the limitation of their techs and disc storage, they decided to removed most of them to make it playable or else we will experience rendering issue and stuttering in some areas. Actually, they can slightly reduce the Map size to prevent removing so many things they added and I rather playing in smaller maps but lots of details rather than playing on larger maps but feel balnd after playing for some time.

And _Saints Row_ was competition, but that franchise was ruined by the third and fourth games. @JoshuaGames4076 I mean sure, porting the map from 4 to 5 wasn't easy for the modders with textured buildings but at the same time. Gta6 is probably gonna have a road map for updates, mainly online expanding it. You gotta remember that gta5 was never suppose to last as most features are lacking, even online it was never suppose to last. Hell rockstar can port Liberty city to gta6 and add more stuff.

@JoshuaGames4076 Your comment basically sums up why GTA 6 is taking so long They could've just moved GTA Vice City's map into GTA 6 and called it a day, but that would've looked ridiculous I'm not sure where you pull 11+ years from, but I don't believe GTA 6 development started anywhere near 2013. GTA Online was developed almost like its own separate game, then they made Red Dead Redemption 2, and I believe end of RDR2 development is where the GTA 6 development started, so, 5 - 6 years so far GTA 6 is far more ridiculously complex than GTA 5 was, with a larger map, photorealistic graphics, tons more enterable buildings. All of those have to be modeled, programmed, and tested

The different pause screens are neat, it's appreciated when they can go the extra mile for something so small. SA had something like that when you went to check out the gallery, stats, etc. MP3 allowed the player to move the camera around Max which was a very nice touch.

8:11 The reason why these images of "blue" people appear so is because the colorspace/RGB values of the files are decoded incorrectly. From seeing it the R and the B signals are either swapped or inverted. The software that is used to decode/convert them, does it incorrectly.

The foliage getting taken out makes a lot of sense. The Xbox 360 only had 512MB of RAM shared between the system and graphics, and the PS3 had a split memory pool of 256MB for system memory and 256MB for VRAM. Having the foliage for promotional material makes sense, but those consoles were absolute potatoes by 2013. That 256MB pool for caching resources on the PS3 was especially limiting for open world games in that generation as it limited what developers could do. As I am typing this I recall Skyrim would eventually break completely on the PS3 after a certain point as the engine required more system memory than the console had available for use. Games like GTA 5, Battlefield 3, COD (which ran at 60FPS on those consoles), and Red Dead Redemption were really impressive given the tiny amount of memory that developers had to work with.

The foliage and vegetation cutbacks can likely be attributed to the target hardware. Allegedly, many beta pre-release builds averaged at around 13-20 frames per second on PS3/360 hardware, and that was with very little going on. That prop density likely wasn't helping matters. Had this been a next-gen release, we likely would've seen a map closer to the beta in terms of prop density.

Game development doesn't work that way, they will have to study and familiarize the PS4 hardware first unlike the PS3 and X360 they pushed both of those consoles to their limits.

This game came out 3 days before I graduated from boot camp and I couldn't wait to get home to try it only to be let down by how bad the gunplay and hit reactions felt after playing RDR and IV religiously. They definitely released early to double dip instead of waiting a little bit for the PS4 and xbox whatever to come out.

thats how it looks in game without weather effects like fog. putting on a beta weather mode like snow or blizzard (x-mas works correctly) no fog or any attempts to block ur view is added, u can see all the way to the water edge looks like a line way out. anyways mt chiliad has the same peaks as shown here, when turning the camera more left or right the mountain comes into full view. something with the culling out in the engine when looking straight ahead it culls more out.

@@Kwint. it does when there is no weather fog or any blocking of view. without correct fog it looks identical to this video. these 3 peaks are the 3 parts of the mountain all slowly rising until the 1 top peak, the no fog and bad rendering causing the top to be culled.

the blueish gray background mountains you see in game are not the actual 3d land it is an effect in game, without this effect the mountain comes into full view with many rendering issues.

They really did play around with a lot of the GTA SA and GTA 4 aesthetics and yeah you can see some LA noire elements to the game. I am assuming that a lot of the beta and early concepts were most likely brainstorms and hardware test to see what would work and what wouldn't work. I love seeing the early betas of GTA games, great video man :)

Gta 5 on the xbox 360 and ps3 used to have a much warmer atmosphere which might be due to timecycle.dat being updated on next gen release. I wish we could still have the warmer look without mods.

Early Beta version most likely ran at 5-15 fps on those old consoles. As a game dev I understand why they cut so much, but I think initially they wanted to release this game on PS4, but someone on top needed lots of money. So releasing the game 1-1.5 years before new consoles was very profitable. PS4 definitely would be able to run beta version at 30 fps.

The beta screenshots looking warmer might have something to do with the saturation. Like you put it, they were taken before GTA5 had found it's footing when it came to art direction so the tone of the original map design was probably artificially brightened up a bit, either as a joke on Rockstars end about LA being a facade of itself or because they hadn't decided lighting placements and whatnot

As a joke? That theory of yours does not align with reality at all. They would not have shown a teaser trailer of their next flagship title just for it to be a joke. The teaser trailer even had better saturation levels similar to those in the beta screens here. The vegetation was most likely cut down because they *had* to release this game on really outdated hardware. The tonal shift I have no clue but that is also disappointing. Well the entirety of V is a disappointment to be fair.

I understand the engine they were using and the limitations of the engine for the time they made it but after visiting LA, playing gta 5 feels so strange, solely because of the lack of foliage. I know they had to take a massive amount of it out but it just feels naked without it and I think that plays a huge role in the environment and doesn’t make it feel as lively and realistic. I’m hoping gta 6 gets the foliage right because as a Florida native, we have a lot of trees here and it’ll make all the difference in realism for the game. I’d love to see Los Santos with correct foliage. It would look so much better

Hi game dev here, I think the main reason foliage density was reduced was due to frame rate reason. Having many normal polygons isn’t the issue. Having many alpha textures(trees leaf or bushes etc) makes the performance drop a lot. If it was exclusively made for ps4 we probably would have a density close to RDR2. And the blue face is probably testing pictures of the models normal maps.

5:03 if I had to guess those are the swamps near Fort Zancudo 5:21 Most likely the forest near Paleto Bay that was later removed (you can see more trees even in one of the first trailers). On the right, I think that would be the place on the left of Alamo Sea that would lead to those swamps near Zancudo

5:52 In this scene, there are two easter eggs. Niko Bellic is on the right. I believe it's suposed to be a Cab from Romans new Taxi Cab Car Company. It's also a picture in the bar in Sandy Shores. In that bar, there is also Niko Bellics jacket and many believe that Trevor killed Niko in that bar, but it's just jacket model. That model can also be found in liquor stores in the game. That van above is an easter egg to Breaking Bad. Rockstar Games really like Breaking Bad and made multiple easter eggs to the series.

I think the fact the map changed so much from vibrant to dead, and less trees, takes into account the Hollywood sign, since it was made in 1920s, so older times, and the game happens in around 2010s As we all know the world has gone dull, and dead, less trees, less color and all, so this is accurate, back then during "hollywoodland" it could have more life, colors and etc, but since it changed to hollywood, and times changed, it adapted, and map had to change to fit the time it was in

After seeing these beta screenshots, imho I'd say that gta 5 would've been on par with gta 4 with the details and gameplay (with a bit of arcadey into it), if it weren't for hardware limitations. They definitely have so many ideas for the game.

I think so. I think it would have been much more similar to GTA 4 perhaps in terms of ragdoll and physics as well as some graphics but once they realized the hardware couldn't handle it they toned back the physics and they removed the foliage

There are areas around the city of Los Santos where trees are obviously missing. If you look where there are trees you can find areas that has textures of where trees should go that aren’t there.

PS3 was released in 2006. Its crazy how gta V was limited by this. All vegetation had to be removed so ps3 could run it. I wish they would add it back with ps4/ps5 versions And it is another reason to look forward to GTA 6. Finaly GTA running on some reasonable hardware

8:14 From the looks of it, they randomly decided to invert the textures. I have no idea why they'd do that, since there is no significance in doing so at all in game development. Maybe they were just messing around. Who knows?

5:30 I always thought the one on the left was Tall Trees in Red Dead Redemption because I remember it looking similar to this and there's even an ad on tv partially taken in RDR. No idea about the one on the right though.

the missing parts of the map is likely a rendering bug this is also something you can see in the trailer but they made the scene fast so you don't notice it

1:22 I noticed that you might want to check if you are colorblind, the garage is red and blue in the final game :) Might just be a coincidence that you skipped saying blue, but actually it's mostly blue with only a red stripe

I never understood why rockstar never updated the vegetation in gta 5 when it got updated versions for 2 other console generations,they make a huge difference to the feel of the map

My guess for the blue people in the game files is for setting the skin tone on random NPCs in your contacts. Most of the NPC models have multiple textures and models to randomize their appearance, perhaps there would have been a way to befriend an NPC and add them to your contacts.

GTA 5 was actually developed using a Ps3 first then after it was completed they ported it over to the xbox 360. so GTA 5 on 360 is actually a Ps3 port. Rockstar are very clever as the Ps3 was known to be difficult to develop games on.

0:38 this reminds me a lot of "alpha build" of "GTA ViIV" mod that was made between the release of X360/PS3 and PC/PS4 versions of the game, I even think that same building is missing (LS Customs area) with these AC vents floating in the air... so I'd say the first shown clue is not a leak but PC mod, made after the official old gen release 😅😅

5:03, this area reminds me of the swampy section bellow Zancudo, if it had trees and vegetation, tho it wouldn't make sense to clear up that area as it shouldn't really be that demanding (presumably for old gen consoles at the time).. like removing so many assets wouldn't make up a noticeable performance gain imo 😄

Possibly the reason for the blue was it was some kinda a texture map or maybe a normal map that was put in the wrong node.
