" John told Mary to leave" does not seem to contain a PP as an argument.

Why did the style of 'e' change at 10:14 on 'John gave Mary'? Magic e.

I don‘t agree with the verb „to love“ needing a complement. Just saying „John loves“ is still grammatical, even semantically. We don‘t need to know who he loves, we just know that he loves.

Not sure what is wrong with "I gave a book". It could be an answer to the question "what did you give to Bill?" Also, I find the sentence "the rock hit Bob" just find as well. Namely, we can say that a rock fell off of the cliff and then if someone asks me "so what?" I can inform them that, unfortunately, the rock hit Bob. Yes, The rock hit Bob!
