I believe in addition to ones you proposed, you can have /l/ as well in the place of post-initial consonant.

I believe this is the video that made me understand why and how "vanished" is split and stressed. Thank you for going more into detail. I was thinking it should be possible to either split it as "Van-ished" or "Va-nished", phonetically both sound harmonious to me. But the second (bad) example doesn't make sense if i want to apply the onset, nucleus and coda. So by exclusion the first way "Van-ished" has to be correct (which is not as satisfying of an explaination, but it works for me i guess).

Sir, this is not an exception. According to Optimality Theory, we have two overlapping constraints in this case: CONSTRAINT I: Maximize the onset. CONSTRAINT Ii: Satisfy the Sonority Sequencing Principle. Obviously, CONSTRAINT I is stronger than CONSTRAINT II (CONSTRAINT I>> CONSTRAINT II), and, thus, CONSTRAINT I has to be satisfied at the expense of violating CONSTRAINT II. Syllabify the word "Australia" to check the rule our; it would be "Au stral ia." In all dictionaries, the stress is on the second syllable "stral."

Thank you so much, i'm majoring in English Pedagogy, but i still have to take semantics as a part of the study plans of my university. The lecturer was stressing me out, she didn't give the class any clear explaination as well as proper examples. I have to study the course myself and you helped me alot. Thank you.

What I do not understand is that in history ry is considered syllabic consonant but how? Shouldnt y/i/ automatically be the nucleus? and r being the onset?
