Analysis of one of William Hazlitt’s essays, ‘On Envy’, examining the “envy” of Romanticism’s Lake School (William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, & Robert Southey) towards neoclassical poet Alexander Pope, using Hazlitt’s assessment of Shakespeare’s genius. William Hazlitt, the Romantic period literary critic & essayist, suggests that imitation & Wordsworthian “Exclusionism in Taste” have led to the lowering of Alexander Pope’s literary reputation in the eyes of Romantic poets.
The lecture:
• Analyses William Hazlitt’s essay ‘On Envy’ [a dialogue with painter James Northcote], from The Plain Speaker (1826)
• Outlines a brief biography of William Hazlitt
• Summarizes William Hazlitt’s assessment of William Shakespeare’s genius: “He was the least of an egotist that it was possible to be” (William Hazlitt, ‘On Shakespeare and Milton’, from Lectures on the English Poets, 1818)
• Examines the “antipathy” of Romanticism’s Lake School poets (especially William Wordsworth) towards neoclassic poet Alexander Pope
• First, by considering Alexander Pope’s popularity (resulting in endless imitation & repetition of his poetry)
• Second, by considering William Wordsworth as an ‘Exclusionist in Taste’
• Closes by suggesting how literary criticism that operates like Wordsworth’s is antithetical to the ideal critical character, which should draw on Shakespearean ideals of being “the least of an egotist…possible”. Draws on John Keats’s Hazlittian notion of the Chameleon Poet.
