Drone footage from September 13 and 14, 2021, of the volcano in Iceland

This is not edited. There is no pretty music. It is really just for educational purposes only, and to show the dramatic change that a single day can make in the activity of the volcano.

That is spectacular to see. When this started, this area was a valley and now it is almost level with the top of the peaks that once surrounded it. Nature transforming right in front of our eyes.

This footage most clearly shows the magma tunneling through to open what appeared to be a new vent. I watched it live. It happened in a few minutes. Hope the Icelandic mil. is on standby for a possible air lift of tourists at very short notice. Thanks for the best footage I have seen...

I don't know if you can do any requests, but right at 12:12 there is a slab of hardened surface going over a lava fall, in one large layer, then immediately followed by a similar size area of surface flow discoloration, that was interesting. This volcano is getting established as a long term event, and there are new things to be learned every single day. Thank you for making this presentation.

I love this video. That giant circle lake of lava... it reminds me of a giant piece of sand art in the evenness of it from above. I didn't realise it was there until this video. How beautiful. We can only keep repeating our thanks to you for these videos. One day collectively they are going to make a beautiful film of the life of this volcano from day one to it's end whenever that will be!

I was mesmerized by that circle. How did it form? Why was it a perfect circle? I would love to see the Icelandic Geologic Office take a bunch of our drone videos and put them into an educational series about what has been going on at the amazing volcano.

OK, so what I'm getting here is people prefer the raw footage over edited videos. That is good to know, because with unedited footage, you just see what is there, not what a videographer decides that you should see.

great shots! subscribed amazing how much that hill at 38:17 has been buried by lava - when bob (rip) was first erupting i believe that was the hill we saw in the background. btw the 'enclosure' is what they call a 'perched pond' - forms when lava erupts in a flat area and forms a pond; each time it overflows the edges, it builds them up slightly to form the wall or levee keeping the pond enclosed. eventually the lava breaches the levee's weak spots (7:43) leaving the pond empty (25:10). again, great camera work - watched it at 1080p and appreciate the HD detail.

Thanks, I do the edited version too, but I prefer to just see through the drone and watch what is happening. Unedited is much more realistic as with the wind and rain, the drone can't just sit there for 20 minutes at a time.

I've been flying drones for a hobby for about 7 years now, and in the beginning, I think all of us thought that every flight we took was suitable for the beginning of a Kevin Costner movie, so we added super dramatic music. Now, drones are much better than they were 7 years ago (when it took real skill to fly your drone and get it back at the end of the flight), so I view them more as documenting an event. I like to think that my drone footage will help some volcanologist to predict something, or prove a point some day.

Starting at 1:51 Contrary to popular belief this is NOT a lava tube discharge. This is a fissure fed by a feeder dike from the new magma. The magma chamber that was formed during the previous week-long non-eruptive activity of the crater feeder dikes.

Excellent. This video explained to me, the odd little islands of surface skin-rubble in the middle of the lake. As the 'enclosure' becomes full and overflows, the flows become wider, leaving the islands behind for when the next big flow happens. An valuable geology lesson. Where are the lava-strollers when you want a real close-up?

Interesting! I flew down about 3m off the surface of what I thought was cooled lava and was rewarded with a melted drone bottom.

And it melts the rock that is in its way to make channels !! Take a look at my September 15 video and there is basically a river of lava with riverbanks (made from hardened lava) that keep the lava river contained.

It seems as the lava bubbles inside the crater only (not overspilling) it might build up its walls and close-in on itself. One thing is for certain, just like the weather in Texas, if you wait 10 minutes it will change!

In Hawaii that is a "perched pond" or "perched channel", where lava builds its own levies, So the lave surface can be well above the ground. In this way, lava could cross man-made levies without totally filling lower areas. Lava does not always flow like water.

Finally we get to see inside it after the 11th. Thank you for doing that. It was pretty wild in there wasn’t it? It’s really amazing how it can change from one day to another. Oh.. get some good hiking boots! Lol seriously, it will make walking up there a lot easier and more comfortable. Stay safe. I look forward to seeing more. And be sure to look inside when you go again if it’s not to windy. I’m so curious s to how full it’s getting. It looks like some of the holes are either plugged up now or are tubes now but smaller so less lava is going thru them which will help the volcano fill up more.

The wind is pretty rough, and many days there is relatively constant threat of rain. I flew over the volcano and it was just "gurgling" at the bottom on the 14th, but on the 15th there were a couple of eruptions where the lava went probably 50 m in the air. I couldn't get close because there were a lot of helicopters and private planes that were buzzing the volcano.

Absolute awesome pictures and video. Volcanoes and volcanic system like this can keep going for years. If you take a look in the history books, there are many examples on how these volcanic activity and system works, here along the mid atlantic ridge across Iceland and under the Atlantic.

Excellent! I don't need any music. The text was interesting and unobtrusive. I got what I hoped to get: a good look at Nar's northern side. It's amazing that Nar's northern wall held. I assume that some lava flows out of the crater through tubes under the surface of the lava 'lake'. The crater stays half empty, lessening the pressure against the wall(s). Thanks, as ever.

I have no idea, as I'm not a volcanologist, but I'd bet that the lava that dropped out of the lava lake from September 13 to the 14th ended up going back toward the core, and then on the 15th got spit out again further "downstream", resulting in the huge flow there was today.
