I finally got to drone a fireworks show last night. Downtown St. Pete, Florida. It came out really great. Flew over Tampa Bay.

Really? Admitting to the FAA that you did something illegal? It is not legal to fly a drone into a fireworks show. Plus, did you have the proper strobe light? How about the proper spotter? Flying into a fireworks show is considered being reckless operation of a a aircraft.

Last night I was flying into the inferno at my park. An Air 2 is quite nice for that stuff. I trusted it more than if I had a Mavic Mini 3 because of the ‘girth.’ There was, I think, a Phantom 3 or 4 in the air because I could see it’s lights reflecting a bit of white plastic. I flew over, turned on the light, and he ran off so fast. This was at 700 feet, around 300 feet above the short fuse fireworks. It was a pretty sight up there.

i was thinking about doing something like this a few years ago.. only i were to hover or circle around the main area the battery fired stuff.. but i chickened out.. was afraid that one of the streaks from the firework would hit my lense and dammage it.. i was thinking about doing this with a hex 680 tarot with a dji/naza board and a dslr camera

Ken, great video as always. I have a question on the format that you use to post your videos on KZbin. I took videos of fireworks last night and the file size for a 25 minute video is 3.9 GHz.. I used a program called Roxio and reduced the size and format of the video down to 1080 and but size of the file is still a 175MB. How do you upload your videos and/or what services do you use to upload them?

Upload at any size. KZbin converts it to their own proprietary file. I can tell you that uploading at higher resolution such as h265 4K uploads faster because KZbin prioritizes higher resolutions.

Great video! Sadly we can't fly after sunset and we would never get permission for both the night flying and flying between fireworks if it was "just for a YT video". You guys are lucky!

Nice video with good info, but you left out an important detail. In addition to the strobe light and getting permission of the show operator (and airspace clearance, if required), in this case the pilot MUST have their FAA Part 107 certification, since they are flying "with intent." Even if unpaid and posting to a non-monetized video, this type of flight if more than simple recreational flying, thus requires a Part 107 cert.

I really don't think that matters since operating a drone in a fireworks show where it can be knocked out of the sky might be considered reckless flying by the FAA. I wonder how much the FAA will fine him. I heard many horror stories of KZbinrs being fined after posting their videos.

Hmm… is this the same Ken “EVERYTHING SET TO AUTO” Heron? 🤣 I had not tried my hand at “pro” settings prior to July-4, but gave it a shot. The results from my Mavic-3 were spectacular. I stayed at the periphery and came out with some nice footage. I might just get up the guts to handle flying my DJI FPV Racer THROUGH the fireworks next year. But…. I first have to grow the balls enough to throw it into “Acro” / manual mode. LOL I did recognize the fact that audio is definitely a must with these sorts of events. After trying to locate a “field audio recorder” review video on Ken’s KZbin channel and coming up dry, I simply ordered a “cheap - but not TOO cheap” Zoom H5 unit. It is actually my first NON-CHINESIUM drone tech product. (Zoom is a Japanese company) Any recommendations on microphones? I have a few Shure SM57’s from my youth… any good? As Always -> Thank you Ken! You present such excellent tech info and skills WITH great humor & wit. Ever since the days of “Ken locked up in in the Old Folks home w/herniated discs” episode, you’ve kept my entire family hooked AND smiling & laughing. Talk about “earning your subscribers”. 👍🏻

Much appreciation for this video! I was just about to do some research on some of the best settings for my GoPro cameras. I will also be flying the Mini 3 Pro around in the neighborhood to get some of the local neighborhood displays as well. I do have one question though you said put it in 4k 30... Will 4K 60 still work with these settings?.. might want to get some slow motion mixed in.

Hey Ken, great vid. Question for you. You mentioned airspace clearance. If the fireworks are already being launched in controlled airspace (like in my area), do I still need to get clearance? My town's fireworks show is literally 1/2 mile from the end of the airport runway.

Absolutely. Airspace takes precedent over whatever happens within it.

very informative Ken! although there is a simpler way to sync audio rather then talking, try making a loud clap right in front of the camera and or mic. that clap will be much easier to see on premier as its wave form is super spiky. this will make it easier if you line up the sounds by hand and the program can spot it easier as well if your using the auto sync settings in premier. hope this helps guys! ^_^

I'm not sure exactly which model Ken is flying, but he's using an FPV quad which is flown with manual controls through a set of goggles. An example of this type of drone would be the iFlight Nazgul Evoque F5

There is nothing quite like having a fireworks show diminished by the distraction of drone lights. IMO it is selfish to “stage rush” a show while families gather to celebrate for what is ultimately cliche and redundant video (really? a fireworks show? Old as time, cringeworthy and boring on video). If one really wants to be a baller, black out your lights and fly illegally. Ken, that Roman Candle video you did with the paintball squad was madcap hilarity. It didn’t ruin anyone’s picnic and seem to be fun for all real-time participants AND video watchers. I’d love to see more drone / paintball / pyrotechnic combat. Who knows? It could become as popular as racing.
